Chapter 8 - Secret of House Eragor

Elaese went out with her brother after hearing her father's order. It was still like a dream to see her own brother talking like a normal person. She was not convinced yet so she wanted to ask some questions to test him, "Aemar, can you tell sister how did you get cured?"

Aemar looked at him and said, "Didn't I already told you, Jaenar and his friends found me while I was walking around the city. They dragged me to one of the alleys and started to beat me up. He even said that when he married you, he will send me to Perfumed Garden so I can be a bed slave to serve men." Aemar was horrified at this thought but he still continued, "After that, Gerold came. He told them to stop at once but Jaenar and others did not listen. They attacked him but Gerold was amazing. Although he is smaller than me, he was like the fighters of the legendary Golden Company. He beat all of them like they were little flies. After that, he came to me and said I have mental problems and touched my face. A white light came out of his hand and, suddenly, I was cured."

Elaese looked at him with wonder and asked, "Did he told you anything about his powers?"

"Well, he talked about gods and magic but it was all complicated. All I understood was his powers were given to him by a God and his purpose was to guide humans. At first, it sounded like it was an exaggeration but listening to him I felt like everything he said was the truth. I don't know where this feeling came from but after feeling his power and experiencing its effect, I wanted to believe him and his purpose. I know you are not a godly person sister but I think you also should try to see his belief. It is simply a miracle…" Aemar was looking forward while talking but his eyes were shining like a comet.

To Elaese, he sounded like a zealot. He did not sound like her silent brother. The person beside her was like a different person. She decided to test the waters again, "Hehe, I heard they are making cherry cakes in the kitchen. It is your favourite dessert so father asked them to make it…"

Aemar looked at his sister like she saw a giraffe, "Sister, my favourite dessert is lemon cake. How can you forget this?"

Elaese chuckled awkwardly and pinched her brother's cheek, "Hahahaha, I was just joking. Of course, they made lemon cakes."

****************

In a study room, an older man and a young man were looking at each other. They were Gerold and Raenar Eragor. Raenar was a loving father. After the death of his wife and the realization of his son's sickness, he became obsessed with the idea of protecting his son.

Today, his son, Aemar sneaked out of the manor on his own. He was worried to the point of death, he even sent his own guards to find him but several hours later Aemar returned with a stranger. He was sitting in his own study room with his daughter, Elaese when his son knocked on the door. When he saw Aemar's state, he was heartbroken. There was blood on his face and bruises on his arms.

His daughter asked questions his own self wanted to ask, however, he stayed silent. To his own surprise, he learned that his son was cured of his sickness. And the person who cured him was the stranger beside him. Aemar said that he cured him with strange powers. He remembered talking with a healer about magic from East. That magic was able to cure his son but it came with the sacrifice. He was eager to learn about this stranger's power, he wanted to learn what did he sacrifice to cure his son. However, the stranger said he did not sacrifice anything and his powers were pure and without harm. He did not believe what he said, so he sent his son and daughter to rest.

Then, he asked the question which was devouring his soul, "Who are you?"

***************

Gerold was not surprised to hear such a question because, in this era, it wasn't normal to help someone without something in return, especially in the Free Cities.

"I am Gerold of Blackcrown," said Gerold simply.

"I can see you're a Westerosi from your features and that was not what I asked to you. I wanted to know what was your purpose for healing my son with your magic?" asked Raenar with a stern face.

"I already explained my purpose once and I don't want to repeat it again so it's better if I show you directly." Gerold stood up and stretched his hand, "May I?" Gerold looked at the person in front of him.

Raenar hesitated a bit but after a thought, he said, "Hmm, show me."

Gerold touched Raenar's face and murmured, "Watch and learn…"

Suddenly, Raenar's eyes turned white and he began to see things. There were two young men walking in the streets of Lys. When he saw who was them, he shocked because they were his son and the boy named Gerold. They were talking about gods and magic. He was also shocked because his son was able to talk like a normal person. He heard every bit of their conversation, Gerold's opinion about gods and magic, his powers and where they came from.

Soon, he woke up and looked around. Just now he was in the streets of Lys but now, in his study room.

"This… this is impossible!" Raenar was dumbfounded.

"It's not," said Gerold calmly.

"But your God…" Raenar was speechless.

"From now on, is our God." Gerold was looking at him with shining eyes, "I can see your deepest secrets, sins and desires. You want what your family had. You want to bring your house to glory again. When the Lysene Spring started, your house flourished and when it ended, your line fell. Your family had had the biggest bank in the known world. Your house was the First Magister for Life in Lys. You were even related to the Targaryens by blood. However, your family's greed became its own doom. Blood demanded blood, for the power they slaughtered their own. What is left of that house is remains in this manor. Strong but not like in the past. Rich but not like in the past. Sly but not like in the past." Gerold looked at Raenar's hands, they were trembling like a dying man's hands.

Gerold turned around and went to his seat to sit. He leisurely looked at Raenar and said, "Isn't that right, Raenar Rogare?"

"How… how do you know that!?" Reaner was scared because it was their biggest secret. If this is revealed then their old enemies would resurface and hunt them down.

"As I said, I can see your deepest secrets, sins and desires. Besides, what is this, writing it backwards? I'm surprised there isn't anyone who discovered this, yet…" Gerold was looking at his eyes with contempt. It was really a surprise that no one discovered them yet, or they just kept their silence about it.
