Chapter 18 - Against The Horde 1

[ [Serene Mind (Max)] successfully suppressed [Mental Trauma Lv 6] ]

Grant took a deep breath and exhaled out all his worries. His breathing grew calm and his face stilled into a tranquil look.

He narrowed his eyes in disgust that was aimed towards himself.

Just because he grew afraid he nearly violated one of his moral codes.

Once something or someone becomes his responsibility, he will have to oversee it to the end.

No matter what the outcome.

And since the well being of four individuals was his task to bear, he would do his best to make sure they would live.

'A goblin army in the hundreds, and a few packs of wolves, shadow leopards and maybe even more monsters I have yet to meet. What a pain!'

Grant furrowed his brows and started to think of a way to face the mini monster horde that was soon to arrive.

He doubted that the dragon behind all of this was just going to sit there and watch.

Grant expected a few powerful spells cast his way to interrupt him and give the monsters a chance to injure or kill him.

'That thing is injured...' He glanced at the fiercely glaring lizard eye.

A dragon was immensely proud and haughty as if they were the sons and daughters of heaven.

But why was that dragon just patiently observing from afar? With its physical strength, it could easily overpower Grant, much less crush him to paste despite being a little juvenile.

Why go through the trouble of commanding an army to kill him? It would be a waste of resources to due so.

Casualties were bound to occur on their side due to Grant.

It knew Grant was strong and could easily kill weak monsters without batting an eye.

The only conclusion Grant could come up with is that thing either being a coward or it has reasons why it couldn't end things with its own capability.

"Beatry, take the gobs with you and I'll carve a path for your escape." Grant spoke and the four were dumbfounded for a second.

Khuek!?!

"But what about you?" Beatry's usual wispy and flirty tone became worried. She wanted to grab ahold of Grant and take him with them but he shook his head.

"I'll be fine. I'll find a way to escape after you four do."

"Then we will help!" Beatry answered, her eyes were a bit unsure and the gobs agreed with her to help Grant.

He snickered before shaking his head once more.

"You won't be able to help. I'll be more safe after you four leave instead of staying here and being a burden to me."

His flat harsh denial and the straightforward answer left the four stunned. The gobs gritted their teeth as they blamed themselves for their weakness.

And Beatry was a bit incensed. She had wanted to deny what Grant had told her but she found the words to rebuke him dying in her throat before they were even able to come out.

It was the truth and it pained her to accept it. She wanted to become a powerful assassin just like her father to be able to do as she pleases without any real consequence.

But right now she was just a burden to the man she took a liking to.

"A burden..." She mumbled blankly and her eyes were soon filled with sorrow and spite towards herself.

Seeing this, Grant didn't try to say anything to reassure the four. The truth hurts but it would keep them safer than a pleasant-sounding lie.

Grant assessed the situation once more from what he is sensing. They were surrounded by monsters.

There was a dragon to their backs that was preventing them from retreating. The packs of wild beasts lay to their northeast direction and the mini goblin army came charging towards them from the northwest.

Those three dangerous forces formed a triangle around them. They were the cornerstones of the triangle and were the most deadly parts.

Grant suddenly felt the ebb and flow of magic before his senses told him that something filled in the gaps and connected the cornerstones together.

They were sealed inside a real triangle now.

"Heads up! Follow me as best as you can and don't even stop to worry about me once I start clearing a path. Your goal is to leave alive and if you do manage to come back to Zirakib then get Stella to help me!" Grant woke the four from their own pessimistic thoughts of self-derision and mockery before telling them what to do.

The dragon was a no go and Grant will do everything to avoid a confrontation with it.

The packs of beasts although manageable, Grant would be the only one to survive if they were to take that route.

The best choice to break out of the triangle imprisonment formation was to charge through the goblin army.

Grant readied himself before breaking out into a mad dash to Confront the goblin army that was going to meet up with them soon.

The ground cracked under his hurried and powerful strides while the four did their best to keep up with Grant.

The gobs were slow and were being left behind. Beatry rolled her eyes and pouted before picking them up and bringing the three with her.

Grant had long since left behind the four in his dust. His hands were already cupped into fists and he was prepared to engage the enemy.

'Kill as much as I can to divert their attention to me. And once the four had caught up, grab them and throw!' Grant already had planned things out after knowing that they became trapped.

His plan could seriously harm him but he didn't care. He must get them out first before he should start worrying about himself.

He found it a bit funny that despite being a selfish person, his moral code was forcing him to become selfless at this moment.

He figured out that every time he was killing monsters, an ethereal sense of coolness and relaxation fills him while some unknown energy invades his body.

Strengthening it even further.

He had killed a shadow leopard for dinner and that leopard alone made his attributes shoot up.

A regular human adults have the base stats of a hundred for all attributes. Grant was now more than ten times stronger than a human.

He put even more power into his legs and he jumped from tree to tree. He was ascending and finally, He burst out of the forest canopy and went airborne.

The pale white full moon coupled with the clear starry skies mesmerized him and filled him with a sense of relief.

He grew even calmer. His eyes became extremely focused. Everything around him disappeared, leaving only him and the goblin army that he was about to face.

As he was falling, Grant saw the army that he was about to face. His eyes widened upon seeing hundreds of little goblins startled by his sudden emergence from above the trees.

Grant gritted his teeth before he reached back. His fingers dug into the upper part of the massive ancient tree that was standing strong behind him.

The tree was wide enough to need three grown men holding their hands together to surround it and the three was about six to seven meters tall.

Grant gritted his teeth further as he used the momentum given to him by his free fall coupled by his strength.

The tree shook and bent as it was dragged forward until soon, its roots gave in to Grant's desire.

He had uprooted the entire tree.

"DIEEEE!!!" He roared at the top of his lungs and brought the massive tree as if it was a divine hammer crashing down unto the mini goblin army of three hundred goblins.

He had decided to give it his all. He would do everything in his power to follow his moral code and protect those he was obligated to protect.
