Chapter 19 - Game of the Generals (2)

While Zyair was distributing his pieces with clenched teeth, Zezolla on the other hand, was sitting on her crystal chair looking at the relatively normal looking game board and one inch game pieces rather agitated. She was stupid, although she was playful and her mind was full of tricks, she didn't know how to play this game at all.

Chewing her thumb nail, Cinderella glanced at the time and sped up reading the manual in her hand. She placed her pieces on the board not knowing what she was doing at all. In the end she placed her strong pieces at the front lines and randomly assigned what's left at random. Finally, she placed the flag down at the bottom center.

...

The timer turned zero, but before the game officially began, a coin appeared, floating at the center of the table.

[Both players have arranged their prices on the board and are now ready to play the game.]

[The first player to move will be decided by a game of coin toss. As the Challenger, Cinderella will let Player RiverSun pick his side.]

[Choose between the two; or ]

Casually picking, Zyair clicked on the . Automatically, Cinderella chose . The moment both were chosen, the coin tossed itself, then it landed on the center of the green board.

Before it ceased it's rotation, Zyair felt that the coin would land on the tail. But in the end, the had a final rotation and finally landed on .

Zyair didn't care whether or not he was the first, but since his turn was first, then he was first.

He waited for the system to give him a go signal and move the first piece.

Unlike Zezolla's straightforward arrangement, where she placed every strong piece in the front lines without tactical strategy, Zyair placed all of his pieces with a plan in mind.

At the start of his turn,  Zyair didn't move any pieces to go forward. Instead, he moved one of the pieces he placed from the bottom right of the board.

Zezolla didn't care, it was just the first move. After Zyair moves his piece placed at the bottom right, she advances her troops forward.

Advancing many troops took many turns. So, while Zezolla walked to the boundary of the enemy forces, Zyair keep changing the placement of the pieces inside his territory.

Zezolla actually didn't know what he was doing.  It was only just a few turns, and Zezolla still hadn't eaten a single piece of Zyair yet. So, till now, Zezolla was ignorant of the identity of the piece in front of the pieces she moved forward.

Games of the Generals weren't like chess where the pieces were in plain sight. The pieces of GoG were created with the same appearance, and only the written symbols on them represented the piece's identity.

That's why at the start of the game, Zyair was hopeful. If GoG could be played in person then it could be played like a survival game in the forest.

Behind the screen, Zyair pouted his lips in regret when he thought of this. Anyway, Zyair rested his chin in his left palm while his right hand was still holding onto the mouse. He waited for Cinderella's turn to end with a sullen face.

With a click, Zezolla placed a piece in front of the enemy. Finally, Zezolla reached the front line of the opposite camp. From the very beginning, Zyair hasn't moved any of his pieces forward. He let Zezolla come to him, so when this certain piece stood in front of the line piece in his front lines, Zyair finally could help by smiling widely.

"Gotcha~"

The lone piece in the Zyair front line was a general.

Automatically, without moving, the piece Zezolla moved was eliminated. Once eliminated, the identity of the piece was revealed.

It was a lieutenant general.

"Woah~ that was close!" Lieutenant general was only one rank below the general, if the piece in front of his general is also a general then both pieces would be eliminated. Thankfully it's not.

Now, since the first kill has been made, then...

"Let's begin. Hehehe."

After that first kill, Zezolla was almost overwhelmed. No matter what piece she moved forward, it will get eliminated. She once made a move and successfully eliminated the enemy's general and major general, but in the end, her Army General was still eliminated. She doesn't know the identity of that certain piece that eliminated her Army General. But it certainly wasn't the enemy's Army General. Because if it was then both pieces would be eliminated.

There's only one piece that could kill a high ranking general without dying. And that was the spy.

Zezolla was sure that it was a spy. She now located one of them, but what about the other one?

Zezolla really wanted to overthrow the whole table.

If this continues she will lose. Zezolla was so angry that she bit her thumb hard.

Meanwhile, Zyair was almost crying from what he was seeing on the screen. He couldn't believe it. Cinderella princess was now shrouded with dark clouds, and her angelic smile was now gone. She now looked like a devil in sparkling clothes. Truly hilarious.

He was tapping the table hard, but he needed to stop because his heart started to thump painfully again.

Calming down his emotions, Zyair sat properly in front of the computer again and watched as Cinderella hesitated, touching several pieces on the board.

GoG could be played in five to ten minutes or so. Unlike chess where you have to think carefully about every move, in GoG, all you need is strategy and luck. You can even move pieces without thinking at all. Since you don't know the identity of the pieces in front of you, you can just blindly guess it all and move based on your instincts.

But Zyair totally mastered this board game. So, Zyair was like playing cards right now. He had already memorized every piece present in the opposite camp. Based on the location and the ranking, Zyair already knows where the flag is.

And it hasn't even been five minutes since. Zyair even felt angry that he planned so meticulously for this beginner. He wondered if this NPC was just giving him a free pass.

In the end, like he expected, Zyair won.

A huge golden congratulations appeared on the screen with confetti and a loud orchestra.

Zyair heaved a huge sigh of relief. "Finish at last! Sheesh, I'll still be after this, so tired..."

Just when Zyair was about to exit the game, the system rang several alerts again.

[Player RiverSun won the first round of the Games of the General! With one win, zero loses, Player RiverSun has received Cinderella's admiration.]

[Crystal Palace's Ultimate Boss, Cinderella gifted you three muffins!]

[Player RiverSun received three muffins from Crystal Palace's Ultimate Boss, Cinderella]

[Cinderella]: ["Young man, let's continue, shall we?"]

Zyair saw Cinderella smiling brightly on the screen.
