I woke to the sound if thunder. I sat up looking at the other side of the couch. Emily sound asleep. I check the clock. It's five am. I hear the door open. I jump up to see Jake and Derek come in. I stand there frozen. Remembering Jake saying I should give Derek space.
Jake notices me. He turns on the hall light. Derek looks better than the last time I saw him. He looks at me. He looks scared. My heart breaks at that look. He looks away and goes up stairs. Jake walks over to me. Hands in his pockets.
"Give him time stormie. He is having a hard time adjusting" he says. Eyes searching mine. Like hes trying to read me. I suddenly feel nervous. He glances behind me at Emily. "You should get some more sleep" he says before heading up stairs.
I head to the kitchen I get a cup and poor same cranberry juice and vodka. I stare at it. "It's a bit early to be drinking stormie" The voice was so soft. Almost a whisper. I turned to see Derek standing there watching me.
I wasnt sure how to react. I picked up the drink taking a few ships. "Emily definitely makes this better" I say. Ignoring him. I wasnt sure why. He sighs. "Derek where did you" Jake enters the room. Looking from Derek to me. His eyes fall on my cup than back to me.
I roll my eyes. "Your drinking again"? Jake asked. "Again"? Derek asked. "Yes they got drunk last night" Jake says. "It isnt a big deal" I say feeling annoyed. "I thought you said I couldn't see him yet" I snap at Jake. He nods "yea well Derek didnt like that plan" he says crossing his arms.
"I just wanted to check on yall" Derek said. Still staring at the cup. He took a deep breath in "I've been thinking" he says. Rubbing his neck. He does this when he is nervous. "While I am figuring this out.. maybe I should go with your mom instead" he says.
Jake and I stare at him. "What"? I say. "Storm.. I have to figure this out and I can't do it hear and I dont want to hurt you or anyone." "Well maybe haylie but anyways" he says. "So you want to run"? I asked. Feeling angry.
"No.. I just feel away from all this I can figure it out faster" he says. Jake's been silent this whole time. "I'd go with you but.." his voice trails off. "Were just regular humans with two if your sicko exs out there" I said.
He looks at me. "Yea". I roll my eyes. "Do what you need to. Like Jake said yesterday we aren't apart of yalls world" i say before heading up to emilys room. Stopping dead in my tracks seeing Emily standing behind them.
"Your really leaving" Emily says. Her voice breaking. Derek looks at her. His eyes softing "I think it is for the best em" he says she looks down nodding. "I'll call my mom" Jake says. Heading out back. "Yall take care of each other. I'll be back as soon as possible. Stay away from them" he says he eyes looking at me.
"What will I tell dad"? I ask. "I dont know storm I am 18 just tell him I needed space" he says. I nod. "Ok she just landed and is getting you a ticket. She'll be here to pick you up in a hour" Jake says. We stand there in silence.
"I always thought youd be leaving me to go off to college" I say. He looks at me. "Storm I'm not leaving you I'll be back" he says. I look down. "Dont make any promises please. Mom promised she'd never leave.. dad promised he'd always protect us.. they both" my voice breaks.
"I am not them storm. I will be back" he says. I nod. "Good luck I guess" I say. He nods. Him and Jake going up stairs. I finish my drink. Emily making her and I another one. We sit on the kitchen floor with the drinks in front of us. Both of us lost in thought. We hear a knock on the door.
We both get up and make our way to the door. Both a little intoxicated. Jake opens the door. "Hey mom" I stare at her. She is beautiful i think to my self. She looks like Emily. Same light eyes. Fair skin. She smiles at me.
"You must be stormie"? She asks. I nod. Wanting to smack my self. I'm meeting there mom drunk. Jake raises his eyebrow at me. I didnt trust my voice right now. "Hi mom" Emily says.
Slurring her words. "Are yall drunk"? Jake asks. "We left yall alone for like 20 minutes" he says. Emily laughs. I'm not sure at what. "Hey em." Emilys mom says. Derek comes down with his suit case. "I wish we where all meeting under different circumstances but I promise to take care of him" she says.
Emily laughs again. Her mom looking at her. "Just funny you taking care of someone but your self" she says. "Emily" Jake says. Giving his sister a look. "What? It isnt like she changed and ran off when this happened to yall ever sense dad shes done everything she can to avoid us" Emily says crossing her arms.
"I wish I could change things but all I can do now is do better " Victoria says
"Will see" Emily replys "um.. can I have a moment with stormie"? Derek asks. Jake and Victoria hesitate "I promise I dont feel hungry or the want to hurt anyone" he says. I rasie an eyebrow still not used to this. "Ok five minutes than we have to go" she says
