"Just a guess. You had the same expression at that time." Dheer answered forcing himself to remain calm.
"Heheee... Everyone says that I really look over-excited whenever I talked about him. Mama Oberoi even said that I was like a child talking about its favorite toy" Anaya jingled.
"Mom knows Sandy!?" It was another shock for him.
"Yes, when she came to meet me for the first time during my vacation, she met Sandy. She really liked Sandy and remarked that our friendship reminds her of your bond between your friends."
"Ohhh" was the only sound he could make at that moment. 'How could mom betray me like this? Why didn't she tell me about that Sandy? What bond like my friends. All of my friends are married except me. And I don't talk about them this excitedly. It's like she's ready to pounce on that Sandy for a hug as soon as she sees him. I don't act like this with my friends.' He felt utterly betrayed and disappointed by this sudden piece of news. 'And she even met that Sandy happily? How come she didn't punch him on the spot.'
"Dheer??? Hello, what are you thinking about? Why do you seem so lost" asked Anaya seeing him in a dazed state?
"Huh... Oh, nothing. I was just wondering how do you come to know about this illegal business going in the hospital. I mean, if they dare to do it in such a strict hospital they must be very skilled and cunning to hide it from the higher-ups. Besides, there must be many people involved. Do you suspect anyone? " Dheer said changing the topic. He could no longer see her overexcited reaction talking about another man in front of him.
This question instantly caught Anaya's attention and she turned serious. " I first suspected it two months back. There was a patient that I operated upon, about six months back. It was preterm labor so has to go for a c-section delivery. As it was a preterm case the child has had a congenital* heart problem for which he had to undergo a heart transplant." she took a pause.
"So the parents sign off for it and waited for their number on the list to receive a suitable heart. About two months back finally it was their number on the list and fortunately found a suitable donor. But on the day of the surgery, the pediatrician claimed that the donor was not suitable and had some problem with his heart so my patients had to wait again to find a suitable donor. So far it does sound a normal thing, doesn't it? she asked.
She continued not waiting for his reply "As most of the time, the actual condition of the patient is known only when we open him. But the strange thing as that the same day another child got a heart transplant who wasn't even scheduled for the operation. I found it suspicious but ignored it at that time. But after that, I heard of similar incidences happening in other wards also. Due to some reasons, the supposed surgery would always be canceled and the same surgery for other patients were carried out although they were not scheduled prior."
"It's really suspicious, how come nobody else noticed it? " Dheer queried.
"Although it's a big thing, the culprits are really being cautious. They dared to target those patients who are not in dire need of the organ transplant and can still survive for a year at least without the transplant" she paused.
"Maybe they just want to earn extra buckets or just they are too afraid to be noticed. And they do it really subtly and only two cases of such incidents are there in the last two months and both are in different departments. But I did hear of such incidences from the nurses when they were talking about their patients." she sighed.
"The culprit is really clever and every time a different staff is arranged for the surgery so as not to raise suspicion within the staff. And for the doctors, I think they too are in the dark because the culprit made sure to hide all tracks of the donor for the unscheduled surgeries and they are clever enough to schedule such surgeries at least two or three months apart and that too of different organ every time so as not to raise their suspicion. For example, if a heart transplant takes place today the next surgery would be a liver transplant after two months and a kidney transplant after two or three months of that liver transplant. Each surgery is carried out by doctors of different departments so no suspicion there. So I told the Director about this and he said to investigate it" Anaya answered.
" The director did investigate it after you told him and found that it's all true. And in most of the case, the organs are silently and efficiently sent to nearby hospitals and all the transplantation are not carried in our hospitals all the time. As you said they are indeed being mindful to not raise suspicion. I talked to the higher-ups of some other hospitals who I know are clean and won't stand such dirty things and they also noticed such happening in their hospital after I asked to investigate the matter in their hospitals. So we are planning to investigate it all properly and collect evidence to bring this network down at once" Dheer shared his findings.
