Chereads / The Kings / Chapter 4 - Reunion

Chapter 4 - Reunion

When I arrived at the hotel holding the reunion, I stood outside the door for almost five minutes. I was a step away from walking back into my nightmare all over again. My breathing became uneven, and my palms were moist as well. My hands were trembling as I turned the doorknob to the other side.

The moment I walked through the door, everyone's eyes were on me. All the butterflies in my stomach flew out of me like it was never there, to begin with. The laced white dress made my appearance look natural and not overdressed. I didn't apply a lot of makeup on either, so it was giving me an innocent look. Plus, it will make others around me feel less intimated.

Right now, I was the lovely shining star at the reunion that captured everyone's attention. Yet, I ignored all those stares and walked up confidently to my ex-friend Pei Changying. Pei Changying wasn't a person I would consider to be a friend anymore, but more of an acquaintance. At one point in my life, Pei Changying and I were close up until that "thing" happened, causing Pei Changying to distance herself from me.

Although, it was Pei Changying who invited me to the reunion. It was an accident that Pei Changying had run into me while out shopping. Coincidence do happen. Of course, I immediately accepted the invitation happily. I only had one goal for going to the reunion, and it was not to reminisce old memories with my former classmates.

Even though I was chatting with Pei Changying off to the side. My ears were already eavesdropping on any conversation related to The Kings.

The Kings were a mafia group who emerged out of nowhere twelve years ago. Within a short time spans that they had appeared, they were able to control the entire underground world. Anyone who knew how The Kings operated will bow down to them and hoped not to get on their bad side. If The Kings wanted a particular group to vanish from this world, they would disappear from this world without a single trace.

The most mysterious thing about The Kings was that the leader had never shown his face before. Rumors were flying around that the leader was very ugly. So he liked to hide his face behind a fox mask and a cloak to cover his disfigured body. Who really knows if that was the case besides those who had seen him personally. But those special individuals never made it to tell their story.

Despite all the powers they held in the underground world, around three years ago, they had mysteriously disappeared without a trace. Everyone assumed that another group had assassinated them. Especially with the number of enemies they had created within those ten years. So no one had questioned what happened to them or tried to find out. That was up until recently that their name was brought up again here and there due to the recent killing in Country Z.

I was trying to get all the information I can get about them, maybe it'll be a step closer to finding the person I have been looking for. Apparently, someone was trying to mimic The Kings based on the killings. The Kings has a unique way of how they mark the person they killed that it was them. Unlike what was shown on the news.

And where was the perfect place to find more information? From a social gathering. Even though I'm not expecting much from my former classmates. It wasn't like they know too much about the underground world. But little information can always turn into significant information.
