Chapter 3 - 1.2 The CEO

Getting the job was, surprisingly, easier than expected. A bartender of her skill was needed and tacking on Sonja's looks, there was really no reason not to hire her. Her age raised some eyebrows, but since they really did need the help, those comments were quickly snuffed out.

"Host is so smart~! What are you gonna do now host? Poison the female lead to death?" The happy-go-lucky system was flitting around in Sonja's head, praising its host to no end. Sonja's mouth twitched, it was only a one-time bartending job, what was all the fuss about?

As Sonja walked back to her apartment, an unexpected person had spotted her. Rebekka couldn't believe her eyes. Didn't she leave that bitch back in Europe? How did she get here? Did she come for the assistant position, after all, she did remember Sonja telling her about how great this position would benefit her and her family. No matter, the position was already hers. Exchanging her body for a perk that can suppress those below her was worth it. What she completely neglected, however, was the fact that Sonja had indeed told her friend that her family was moving to Los Angeles, many, many times and that Sonja's direction and location at this time didn't correlate to either going to or coming from the interview.

Feeling a thorny gaze on her back, Sonja looked around until she found the source: Rebekka Jóhannsson. Not being one to miss out on the fun, Sonja turned her head towards Rebekka and smiled to her. Since the original soul was still on good terms with Rebekka, there was no point in severing their relationship this early, especially when Sonja had no footing in this country yet, especially when Rebekka did.

"Rebekka, how have you been? I haven't seen you since I moved. I thought you had forgotten about me!" Sonja had rushed over to Rebekka's side, perfectly portraying the image of a cute and loyal friend, not missing the barely suppressed jealous and hate-filled gaze headed her way. Smirking inside, she purposefully acted more cute to flaunt her beauty, knowing that Rebekka always wanted to destroy her face. Throwing her arms around her "friend", she hugged her for a few seconds, then let go, "considerately remembering" that they were still in a public place.

Rebekka didn't want to deal with this girl, but since Sonja blindly trusted her, she can extort some perks from her and make sure she won't ever climb to be higher than she is now, a nobody...or so she thought, not knowing that Sonja's soul had already been swapped out for one that can't be easily deceived. Smiling sweetly towards her friend, Rebekka made an excuse on shopping for furniture, as she had just moved in as well. In reality, though, she was going over to her boss's place in the middle of the afternoon to "solidify her position", which was really just a cover for fooling around all day with the boss. She has to admit, that man really knew how to keep a girl coming back for more.

"Okay, I understand. Well, I'll see you around!" Sonja waved to Rebekka as Rebekka moved farther and farther away. Forcing a smile on her face, Rebekka waved back.

Watching Rebekka leave was like watching a child sneak into the pantry to grab a cookie seconds after you told her no, a truly funny sight, watching her trying to be her own person. Sonja's lips curled into a smirk and continued to walk home as leisurely as ever.

"Host, why did you do that? You're going to separate the male and female lead, and possibly incur her wrath. Why are you trying to be kind?" The system would tilt its head cutely if it could, but since it doesn't have a body, much less a head, it couldn't.

Sonja smiled and replied, "Look to my left, across the street, who do you see?"

Taking a peek in that direction, the system was in shock. That was Rebekka's boss, the nameless CEO! What's he doing here and looking at Host that way?!

The system started crying to Sonja, "Host, the gaze that guy's wearing is really strange! What is he thinking about? Host, please protect yourself and your chastity!"

This anxious yet idiotic system couldn't tell apart the different types of gazes, thought Sonja. The gaze the CEO was giving her was one of confusion and interest, presumably because even though he's seen Sonja's picture and file, he's never met her or her character before, and based on what Rebekka said about her childhood friend, Sonja was too headstrong and assertive to be content with an assistant position. Frowning, the CEO resolved to ask Rebekka tonight about this matter, as Sonja's character didn't match with what she had said.

If either Sonja or the system had been privy to his thoughts, they would have been incredulous. Rebekka had actually been badmouthing Sonja to powerful people, blackening her name. However, they weren't and thus continued on their merry way.
