Chapter 12 - Cold duplicates

A Short while later Wendy and Lissa arrived at the guard house of the city guards.

The city guards who had seen pure witches before visibly recoiled in fear. However the members of the garrison that were here at the moment, immediately became cheerful and rushed forward to meet them.

"Miss Wendy is it? Let me shake your hand! its an honor to meet you!"

"What? The Wendy of Hermes? " "Wow! look this way please! oh so beautiful!"

"You're the one that took out the demons!? We're so lucky to have you here!"

"You must be the friend that 'SAW' the battle before it happened! that's so wonderful! please protect us too!"

Lissa and Wendy were a little dazed by the complete opposites in front of their eyes. And the city guards looked at there superiors like they were nuts. They had never had the convenience of having witches fight at their sides, nor seen the various plays in Neverwinter Idealizing the witches.

Lissa came forward to the captain of the guards. "We need to request transportation to the front line for an essential mission from Lady Isabella."

The Captain frowned, "You want to go to the wall?"

"Yes please," Wendy said politely with a brilliant smile.

"Why? Its really dangerous there, we don't want to have any harm befall you..." The Captain said in concern.

Lissa smiled and turned to Wendy, Lissa removed her own necklace and handed it to Wendy. Then without a stone she walked up to the desk and put both hands on it, leaning forward jutting out her chest. Although the captain of the guard had been trained by the garrison, and would not easily show fear, he was a little nervous to have this young beauty leaning on his desk in front of him.

"Take out the drawer from the bottom right side of your desk." Her smile had grown even larger and he couldn't stop from swallowing. Desperately averting his eyes from certain pair of prominent breasts.

The captain reached down and pulled out a drawer, that contained a small box full of 'brass". This was the title the garrison gave the shells that had had the bullets emptied from them during practice shooting, or battles. And even though they were spent, They had been strictly trained to retain all of them, to send back to Neverwinter to be 'recharged' with a new bullets, primer, and powder.

"Place your 'gun' here she pointed at the spot directly in front of him."

Curiosity had now replaced his nervousness and put his revolver in front of him.

Turning around she walked to Wendy, and removed Wendy's necklace and took back her own.

Motioning to the Desk she said, "Ok Wendy, its your turn."

Wendy stepped forward and her eyes began to glow the moment she left the range of the stones.

Stepping up to the desk she took one of the brass from the box and examined it. Then glancing at the gun her eyes widened and she mumbled. "Oh so that part is missing... and we want to put it back.." Looking casually back at the shell it suddenly was a complete bullet.

The garrison members all rushed to the desk at once, crowding it and shouting in unison "A BULLET!!!" Wendy blushed at the sudden boisterous attention, and motioned to the box "Its not the only one! there are plenty more." They were all breathless as they saw the box of empty brass now filled with regular bullets.

One of the garrison members grabbed a round and rushed out of the room towards the underground shooting range that had been set up. Some of the others realized what he was doing and all leaned towards the door listening. The sound of a shot range out in the distance. Wendy jumped. The garrison members and Lissa did not.

A few moments later the garrison member rushed back into the room to announce. "It was real! it works!" The room erupted into arguing as the garrison members all begged or demanded from the captain, the honor of escorting the lovely witches to The wall in the New city.

***************

Several hours later, a covered wagon arrived at the base of the wall. Several thousands of feet higher in elevation the chill was more profound. Lissa through chattering teeth told Wendy.

"Take off the necklace! We need to stay warm!"

Wendy removed it and handed it to Lissa who, adding her own tossed them into the back of the carriage. Immediately the chill seemed to fade as if it never existed. The driver, one of the garrison members who had drawn the lucky lot, sitting next to them was pleasantly surprised. Coming to greet them, Eagle face the leader of the garrison troops, approached the covered wagon.

Eagle Face had a hopeful yet doubtful expression on his face. "Welcome my name is Eagle Face, You must be Lissa and Wen... " He cut off the moment he stepped within five yards of the wagon. Snapping his head down he noticed the marble flagstones beneath his feet were free of snow and ice.

"Yes we are!" Lissa said cheerfully hopping down from the wagon. Wendy followed and the driver gave a sigh as he realized his respite would end in a moment.

"Follow me to the munitions building. " Eagle said and guided them towards a building that looked like a new structure here, but more formidable and solid looking then the other castles in this kill zone next to the wall. Ten feet from the building a post was standing in the ground with a bell on it. Eagle pulled a cord and rang the bell 3 times. After a hiss of steam shot from the sides of the massive door it slowly opened to one side rolling only a few inches a second. The door itself had no seams whatsoever but appeared to be made of solid stone 4 feet thick. Eagle stepped into a 4 meter deep and wide passage way and waited at the end. A wagon would have no trouble fitting in this hallway. Wendy and Lissa followed and glancing back Lissa began to giggle at the pathway free of snow to the waiting wagon. The hiss of steam sounded again and the door ponderously shut.

Once the door completely returned on its track behind them, the wall in front of them slid open at the same speed. The moving wall revealed a large open area like a courtyard but completely contained indoors. The walls had glowing crystals mounted everywhere enough to nearly make this space as bright as day.

In front of the opening door stood a line of garrison members all with looks that showed how they stood on the edge of despair or redemption. From the far right a middle aged man partially balding was holding a large object the size of a melon, but shaped in an odd cylinder shape. He smiled apologetically and made a small bow. He pushed forward the next person in line, a younger man who held a strange chain filled with empty shells.

"Hello. " the younger soldier said doing a quick bow of his own. "Can you refill these?"

Lissa spoke up while looking into his eyes. "We need a bullet that hasn't been used of that kind first."

The younger soldier looked a bit embarrassed as he stepped back. The third soldier in line hurried off down a passage to the right.

"Well then.. I guess i'm first then." the middle aged man stepped forward.

"This here is called a mortar, We're down to about 12 of these and we need them for the hybrid demonic monsters." Wendy stepped forward and held out her hands.

Lissa and the older man both said at the same time. "CAREFUL! its heavy!"frowning she simply put her hands on it for a moment. then squatting she reached out with both hands as if she had brought something from nowhere and sat it gently apon the ground. An Identical mortar. The first soldier gasped in surprise and picked up the second new cylinder staring at it for a moment before he walked briskly to a tunnel to the left. Meanwhile the third soldier returned with bullet the right size for the brass in the chain. He sheepishly handed it to her and she carefully examined it turning it in her hands. then she raised her head and the second soldier grunted as the chain doubled in weight now full of perfect unused bullets.

Lissa was watching Eagle's face, not Wendy, and holding back her giggles as his face seemed to rotate several colors from pale to flushed and then also confused.

"So.. so it .. it is true!" he stuttered. "You're .. you'll become... our savior!"
