Chereads / Call me Wendy. / Chapter 18 - Fixing A Cold Mistake.

Chapter 18 - Fixing A Cold Mistake.

Wendy had never slept so well as she had up by the wall defense fortress. Every day she exhausted her power replacing the bullets of the HMG's and making mortars. The garrison treated her like a queen caring for her every desire. Wendy started felt like nothing could ever go wrong here. There was only one thing she hated...

Eagle face placed a redbrown pill on the table before her. "Lady Wendy.. could you please..."

Wendy stared at the pill her face twisted with revulsion.

"You have to use these disgusting things?!?" she said almost shrilly.

"Unfortunately yes... its the only thing that keeps us alive during the blizzards, The church apparently had a large supply, but its close to dwindling and...no one will ever make them again, Without them my men will freeze to death." Eagle said gravely. "So please.. could you consider it?" Eagle begged.

With her green eyes looking a bit watery, she bit her lower lip and whispered. "Where do you want them?"

Eagle face motioned to an empty crate and she glared at it as if it had killed her favorite pet.

A slight breeze could be felt moving toward the crate, and a mist seemed to rise inside the crate coalescing into thousands of redbrown pills. Completely filling the 4 foot wide crate with the redbrown pills she then looked away from them Disgusted.

On the other hand Eagle looked exultant, assured now they would make it through the months of demons with no amputations from frostbite.

"Please let me go on the wall!" Wendy begged,

"Even if only for only one shift I can make it so they don't need to use those awful pills!"

Eagle nodded eager to please the goddess, unaware that at this moment he had changed the fate of his soldiers.

Wendy gasped in excitement as the Hmg crew fired rounds at an approaching wolf creature, tearing it in half. Then they changed target to a half bear half lizard that rushed as fast as it could to reach the wall, but only added to the pile of bodies as it's head exploded. The other machine gun battery further down the wall rang out and tore some massive boar to shreds.

When a carrier worm appeared, and attempted to scale the wall, the jury-rigged mortars opened fire blasting its top to bits and splitting it like some long melon full of monsters, that the Hmg crews quickly finished off. Wendy bounced on her toes as she watched full of enthusiasm. Occasionally she would cheer the garrison troops on.

"Thats it! get em all!" Breathless and excited with a flush on her face, She cheered and leaned on the railings. There was one soldier at her side barely containing his concern. He was poised to snatch her IF she accidentally jumped off the wall. Everyone at this Hmg emplacement was feeling rather pleasant, like they were on vacation, the temperature as warm as if they were inside.

Meanwhile the other HMG emplacement kept checking the time, shivering in place waiting for their turn.

"SWITCH!" The gunner called swinging the gun emplacement back over the wall. The top of his gun was glowing faintly and putting off steam.

"Let me!" Wendy shouted and waved her hand at the machine gun barrel. before her hand had completed an arc, the barrel was as cold as if it had been sitting in the cold pile of replacement barrels, next to them on the wall.

The garrison members stared at her again with wonder then at each other. The next gunner took a seat and swung back out to continue the battle.

Wendy could concentrate and see inside the gun watching the pin hitting the caps and igniting the powder within to expel the slug. She marveled at what kind of genius it would take to make such a thing. In a spontaneous moment, she made a shell and bullet appear in the air and ignited the powder inside. What happened shocked and confused her, The bullet and shell shot in opposite directions, the casing just missing her. She realized without something holding the shell in place the explosion couldn't propel the shell properly.

Behind her she heard a pained shout, and realized she'd compounded her error.

Spinning around she saw the soldier that had been next to her on the ground cradling his shoulder.

"Oh NO! "I'm SORRY!! Wendy rushed forward then froze in place as she had unintentionally looked through his hand at his injury. The complexities of the things holding together a body now bombarded her brain. she saw the broken capillaries and the skin, the muscles and the blood.

The soldier on the ground was trying to hide the pain now and noticed her glowing green eyes had a second mote of light orbiting her cornea now. Wendy reached out her hand slowly as if she was pushing through some barrier, and touched his shoulder. The soldier felt a coolness replace the pain and the wetness on his hand from the blood vanished.

The soldier stared in shock at Wendy and then at what had been his wound. "Is it the same as Nana Pine?" he said. Those were the last words she heard before she passed out.

When Wendy woke in a large bed with warm sheets she held her hand up and stared at it in wonder for a few hours.

Later she got up and snuck up to the door as if she was eavesdropping, to examine the guards standing oblivious to her outside her door.
