Chapter 7 - Taming

Another new feature the system gained during the last update seems to be a monster appraisal function. Another essential skill if I don't want to die, gauging the enemy's strength before picking a fight seems like a good idea now that I think about it. Also, the [Tameable] bit at the end made me curious. System, how do I tame monsters?

[Normally to tame a monster one would have to go through life and death trials, forming an innate bond with it. However, through the system host can raise the affinity of monsters far easier.]

Hmm, well it is starving. I went to the shop and bought some uncommon meat for 50 SC before walking over to the little spider. Now that I looked at it closer it was quite cute. It was only around a foot tall as well. Also, as opposed to its family it didn't seem to be blind, as it had black eyes instead of white ones. I raised my hands cautiously as I walked towards it. It started backing away but when I took the meat out of my inventory it stopped almost immediately. It cautiously started a slow crawl towards me. I held out the meat to it with one hand. After it got close it snapped up the meat, devouring it. After it finished it looked at me hopefully. I bought another slab of meat and after it finished eating it came towards me. It shoved its head under my hand and sort of rubbed onto me like a cat.

[Tamed Lv.1 Baby Alpha Cave Spider, awarded 100 SC, 100 Exp]

[Congratulations! You've tamed your first monster, awarded Unique Skill Roulette x1]

As I read over it I had to rub my eyes to make sure I wasn't seeing things. I couldn't stop a smile from spreading across my face as the second message remained. I immediately opened my inventory and rolled it.

[Congratulations! You have received: Soul Reap (Unique)]

[Soul Reap - Unique]

[Trait 1: N/A]

[Trait 2: N/A]

[Trait 3: N/A]

[Trait 4: N/A]

[Trait 5: N/A]

I'm not sure exactly what it does but it must be good since its unique grade, a grade higher than epic. I looked back down at the spider. Hmm, I do need a name for it as calling it Baby Alpha Cave Spider isn't very practical. What would be a good name for you?

"Billybobjimjoe?"

The spider looked taken aback before immediately hissing at me in a cute manner. Yeah, that name doesn't fit very well.

"How about Charlotte?"

She seemed to think about it for a moment before making a much softer hiss. I could only assume that was an approval. I walked out of the caves with Charlotte following me. Speaking of Charlotte, system, can you show me her status?

[Name: Charlotte]

[Species: Alpha Cave Spider]

[Level: 1 (0/100)

Huh, so I guess I'm probably just getting a super simplified version of her stats. Since I don't want her to die I should probably level her up as well as test some things out. System is there a way to share experience with her or do I have to cripple monsters and let her kill them?

[Host can form a party with his tamed monster and set the rate of shared experience]

Alright. I formed a party with Charlotte and set the experience gain to 75/25 in favor of me, after all, I do still need to level up as quickly as possible. I ran off into the forest, limiting my speed so that Charlotte could keep up with me at first but then switching to just carrying her in my arms so I could run full speed. After a few minutes of running through the forest, I came to a clearing. I stopped in my tracks as the system prompted me with the information of the creature laying in the middle.

[Lv.10 Alpha Direbear (Tier II Boss)]

I held my breath as I set Charlotte down. I put a finger to my lips and she seemed to get the message as she silently settled down in the brush. I peeked out just enough to get a better look at the bear. It was probably about ten feet tall, with thick powerful arms and legs. It had large fangs and claws as well. It looked like it was genetically designed to be an efficient killing machine. My first instinct was to run, but something inside of me was pushing an insatiable bloodlust upon me.

I felt myself start to move but using the entirety of my willpower I managed to keep myself in place. I looked down to Charlotte and didn't see her until I focused extremely hard and finally managed to make her out. I brought out her character sheet to find a new addition.

[Charlotte]

[Species: Alpha Cave Spider)

[Lv.1 (0/100)]

[Skills: Stealth (Level 2)]

Well then, she seems to be picking up skills quickly. It probably has something to do with her being an alpha. I took out my old spear and slowly but carefully lined up the spear with the Alpha Direbear's head. I pulled back my arm halfway before battle sense kicked in.

I re-aligned the spear, changing the angle and my grip on it slightly from before. I let battle sense make the adjustments as I tried to feel around for mana. It took me several minutes before I finally felt something, a sliver of energy. I traced it back to the biggest pool of mana in my body. It was residing in my core. I started slowly, siphoning out energy before something clicked and it came rushing out like water from a broken dam. I excitedly pushed it into my spear as I started to throw. The spear started to come apart from the sheer amount of energy in it, only being held together by a swirling mass of mana. As I let go it flew towards the alpha bear at incredible speeds. The bear seemed to notice something and moved. This caused the spear to miss its head and hit it in the shoulder.

The Alpha Direbear's shoulder was completely blown apart as It let loose a terrifying roar.
