Chapter 5 - Chapter Four

Sarah had been devastated beyond words when she discovered what had transpired between her friend and her husband. Rebecca had been someone she viewed as a confidant and often shared her inner most and darkest secrets with.

Sarah mused on the situation and discovered that if it had been another friend of hers she might have not felt as she felt but this was what made it different.

But Rebecca... that had been different. The betrayal cut deeper than any knife could reach, She could not believe that someone she had considered a part and parcel of herself had gone ahead to betray her in the most despicable way ever known to man kind.

Sarah had always shared her fears and concerns when it came to Marcus with Rebecca with her giving suggestions and advices on how she should be patient and not consider making any rash or hash decisions that could see her lose the freedom she desperately craved or wanted.

Sarah had first noticed something was off three months ago when Rebecca's behavior began to change, her friend had suddenly become more reserved and was not as sharing or open as she had been in the early stages of their long friendship.

The weekly lunch dates became sporadic, then stopped altogether. Her friend's usual warm hugs were replaced by awkward, guilt-ridden side-steps, Sarah had often questioned if there was anything wrong with Becca but the answer she had always gotten was that nothing was wrong and it was just a work related issue.

Weekend sleepovers started happening on longer and longer dates with Rebecca always making excuses of how caught up she was with work and as such was not available to hang out as they had always done in the past.

Sarah became tired of the change and vowed to get to the bottom of it in a bid to get her friend back and so she made an unexpected visit during a weekday to Rebecca's house after confirming her availability from people she worked with at the office.

It was not Sarah's intention to go to Rebecca's house on that faithful Wednesday, her plans had centered on her paying a visit to her during lunch at the office. She wanted it to be a surprise so she placed a call to Stella who was Rebecca's secretary to inform her that she would be making a surprise visit only to be informed that her best friend did not come into the office on that day as she had called in sick and had taken the day off.

Sarah thanked Stella for her feedback and became more worried when she discovered that her friend had taken ill and so she rushed to her house in order to provide the much needed support and care she felt she desired.

Nothing had prepared Sarah for what she saw at Becca's apartment, given the fact that she had a card that enabled her enter the apartment as she placed she walked in to seeing her best friend with her husband.

The sound of Marcus's distinctive laugh had drifted through from the living room as Sarah tried to set up the stuffs she had gotten from the supermarket on the kitchen counter. She could not believe her ears and hoped her mind was just playing tricks on her.

She slowly made her way to the living from and that was where things suddenly fell apart, she'd seen them together on Rebecca's couch, his hand casually resting on her thigh as they shared what appeared to be an intimate joke. The scene was so domestic, so comfortable, that Sarah knew instantly this wasn't a one-time thing.

She'd stood there for what felt like hours but was probably only minutes, watching her husband and her best friend behave like lovers. Every gesture, every shared glance told a story of familiarity that must have been months, if not years, in the making.

She was distraught and could not believe the scene that was playing right in front of her, Sarah did not even realise that she had made an audible gasp that drew attention from the couple on the couch who scrambled away from each other as soon as they saw her.

She was lost on what to say and did not even know how to react to what had unfolded right in front of her, she turned in a bid to leave the apartment when she saw Rebecca guiltily make her way towards her as if she wanted to offer an explanation to what had occurred.

Sarah ran out of the apartment like it was on fire and never looked back, she was on autopilot when she sat in her car and drove herself to her house as she could not comprehend where things had suddenly gone wrong. That was the night she made up her mind that her marriage had to come to an end.
