Chereads / The Dark Dragon's Vessel / Chapter 8 - Bonding

Chapter 8 - Bonding

A lone wolf and an abandoned cub, what a duo. Both cursed by fate, yet so different. One alone for survival and the other because of others. Did fate bring them together as a wicked joke?

The wolf spent many days in the cozy home of the little bear, not sure of his intentions for saving a horrendous creature like him. But sadly, he couldn't stay there forever. Food would run out, and he would have to leave sooner or later. He would do the cub a favor by leaving him with some food. Even if he was a terrifying wolf, he couldn't do such a thing as leaving his savior without food.

Whenever night hit, he made his decision. It was difficult to decide, he had spent the whole day thinking about it. He clenched his teeth, and with his instincts crying for their long-awaited freedom, he stepped into the hateful and cold snow. His fur was instantly hit by the cold wind, after staying in a warmer environment it had slightly adapted, and now back in the snow, it had to forget and readapt to its home environment.

Yes as he was about to take his first step, the cub ran in front of him and blocked him away. It really couldn't understand the kid, it rolled its terrifying sharp eyes and tried going around him, but the bear wouldn't falter. It began moving in weird ways: jumping, spinning, going backward, and many other confusing gestures. Was it trying to tell the wolf something? Well if it was, it was not working.

He tilted his head to its right side, the opposite side of where the wind was coming. It was confusing, it was sad that animals couldn't communicate with each other as humans do, if they did this would have been a more interesting interaction.

It squinted his eyes, trying to focus on its gestures. But its brain wasn't coming up with anything. That was until everything clicked, his gestures locked like hunting. Was it trying to tell the wolf to teach him how to hunt?

Well if that that was the case, it couldn't have picked a worse teacher. Lone wolves are not known as good teachers. They tend to go too hard on their students, moreover leaving them to learn by themselves. But you can't blame them, that's just how they learned themselves.

He looked at the cub and sighed. It started to leave, but as the bear was looking at him leave with sadness filling his eyes, it gestured for him to follow, and the bear couldn't have done it quicker.

...

"Come on please!" Ryan said while on his knees, begging for Max to accept his request. It looked like he was little by little starting to cry. He really wanted to learn how to fight.

'No, stop asking.' Max calmly answered as he ate the food that Ryan gave him. He had to say, this guy really knew how to cook, he should be a chef, not a warrior.

"But why? You said this wouldn't be such a selfish request. Did you lie to me?" His sadness was clearly shown, for Max this was like puppy eyes.

'It isn't, I'm just not the best teacher, and I'm not teaching a child to fight.'

"Im not a kid, just so you know I'm 16!" He pounded, clearly angered by being called a kid, looks like it wasn't a rare assumption.

Max dropped the tray on the ground leaving a mess on the floor and even the walls. His eyes widened, he couldn't believe it, how could this guy be older than him? It was a nightmare. 'Damn you fate, back to your shenanigans I see.'

He cleared his throat and responded with a professional tone. 'Well even if that's the case, I still won't do it.' He stopped for a second and then continued, but his confidence was replaced by sadness. 'It's more of a personal reason.'

Ryan clenched his fists, still not giving up. He got up, and with a more confident tone than before, tried one more time. "Then at least let me come with you, I can help you! I know many things." He raised his arm and started counting with his finger. "I've learned how to blacksmith, cook, make potions, and even crochet! Don't you think these are good skills, also you need a new sword." This caught Max by surprise, it wasn't like he was asking anymore, it was more like he was demanding to come with him. Max started massaging his head, this was a difficult decision, after all, he was right. He would be really helpful.

After some time, he sighed. 'I'll think about it, but I first need you to make me a sword.'

After Max's answer, the room was shocked by an awkward silence, quickly broken by Ryan forcing Max into a tight hug.

"Of course! I'll make you the best sword possible." His face radiated sunlight, could true happiness really do this?

But that was the least important thing at the moment, he first needed to get out of this bear hug before he ran out of oxygen. He tried tapping his shoulder, but it didn't work. Only one thing came to his mind.

Blue electricity ran up his legs, and like a gust of wind, it made the room shake a little. With his power in place, Max had enough strength to jump out of the hug, yet the next second he would find himself falling to the ground. Looks like he wasn't able to control its strength, and had hit his head on the ceiling.

He started rolling on the ground, his hand rubbing the spot where he got him.

Ryan was looking at him with let's say... disappointment, yeah that's right disappointment. "Maybe I should find a new teacher."

Max quickly got up, his face filled with rage and a little embarrassed as his face started to redden. 'Shut up!'

Ryan laughed. "Im just joking, that's what friends do. They have fun.'

The redness on Max's face disappears, being discolored by an abyssal black. Was this because he called him his friend? Or is it something else? 'Friend huh.'
