Chapter 23 - 23

I wanted to make a special chapter or two, but I overdid it and ended up with four, so I'll just leave it as a small arc about Kara's past story in Fairy Tail. I hope you like it.

Past Story

—Kara, Mom will be mad if she finds out you're going through her things —said a young Cana as she watched her sister scatter their mother's belongings.

—Don't worry. If we let Mom stay sick, she could be in trouble. We have to find a way —Kara replied, looking at her sister.

Both were worried since their mother had been weakening and bedridden from time to time. No doctor could discover the cause, and, unfortunately, they didn't have enough money to send her to a magic healer.

—Here it is —Kara said, pulling out an envelope with a letter that seemed to have been written by their mother a long time ago.

Kara quickly read it, though she already had an idea of what it said. Basically, it was a farewell from Cornelia, who knew she didn't have much time left. In the letter, she asked her daughters that, after her death, they look for their father, Gildarts Clive, a mage from Fairy Tail.

Kara didn't have a good opinion of Gildarts. After all, he had never been present while their mother raised them both, working as a baker every day until she fell ill. She knew the story of how her mother left him because he was always traveling for his missions.

—Cana, we're going to the city to find our disgusting father —Kara said after finishing the letter.

—We have a father? —Cana asked innocently—. But Mom told us we couldn't go too far... —she said worriedly.

They lived in Magnolia but on the outskirts of the city, so getting there wasn't difficult. However, being so small, it would take them at least one or two hours with their short legs.

—It's fine. Let's ask Aunt Karmila to take care of Mom for a few hours. We'll be back quickly —Kara said, hurrying to gather supplies for their small trip.

Cana followed her lead and also picked up some things to take. She was quite excited to meet their father since, from a young age, she had always felt a little envious of her friends' families.

—I wonder what our dad is like —Cana said with a smile.

—Don't get too excited. Men are disgusting —Kara replied, but that didn't change her sister's mood.

After preparing and informing their neighbor, whom they called Aunt Karmila, to look after their mother, who was still resting, they both set off.

Cana brought along her small dog named Pico, who would accompany them on their journey while holding her sister's hand with a cheerful smile.

As they walked, Cana picked small flowers from the roadside to give to her sister, who, seeing her so happy, also smiled brightly.

When they arrived at the city entrance, they were both amazed. The city was divided by a massive central passage, with houses elevated above the ground.

—Is our dad here? —Cana asked excitedly.

—Tsk. Yeah, that old man should be here —Kara said, looking around for Gildarts.

—Hey, little ones. Are you lost, or are you here to take on a request? —said a voice behind them. It was Macao and Wakaba, still young, greeting them friendly.

—We're looking for our dad —Cana quickly responded.

Macao and Wakaba froze, pointing at each other.

—N-No, it won't be me, right? —Macao asked nervously.

—No, no, no, I don't have a wife —Wakaba replied, scratching his head in confusion.

—Not you, idiots. Our father's name is Gildarts Clive. Do you know him? —Kara said impatiently, snapping them out of their confusion and fear. However, upon hearing Gildarts' name, they froze again in shock.

—Do you know him or not? —Kara insisted, annoyed. She was worried that their mother would wake up and not see them, which could make her anxious.

—Ah, yes, sorry. Yes, Gildarts should be inside the guild —Macao said, coming out of his surprise while pushing Wakaba to react.

—Come on, we'll take you to him —Wakaba said, opening the guild's door to let them in.

When they entered, Cana and Kara were astonished by the chaos inside. Some people were fighting, others cheering and betting, and some were drinking without a care.

Kara frowned at such a scene.

—Oh, Wakaba and Macao, you arrived just in time. Let's have a drinking contest! —shouted a guild member, greeting them.

—Later. We have visitors —Macao quickly replied, drawing everyone's attention to the two girls.

—Hey, guys, taking little girls off the street is a crime —joked another guild member.

—Shut up! They came looking for someone —Wakaba responded, annoyed.

—Wakaba, Macao, did you finish your mission? I hope you didn't destroy anything along the way —said a small old man sitting at the bar.

—Hello, Master. Well… we might have gone a little overboard, but that's not important. We brought some visitors —Macao said, scratching his head in embarrassment.

—Of course, it's important! —Makarov exclaimed furiously. He had already received a report about the destruction they caused, and he was about to scold them, but when he saw the two little girls looking at him—one with curiosity and the other with annoyance—he decided to postpone it.

—What brings you here, little ones? —he asked with a kind smile.

—Well, Master… they say they're looking for Gildarts —Macao said, unsure how to explain the situation.

—Gildarts? He's on the second floor looking for another mission —Makarov replied, pointing upstairs—. Why are you looking for him? Don't tell me he got into trouble…

—Well… you could say that —Wakaba said with an awkward smile.

—We're his daughters —Kara said bluntly.

The entire guild went silent for a few seconds.

—WHAT?! —everyone shouted in unison, looking at the girls in shock.

Cana felt scared by their reaction and hid behind her sister, who frowned even more.

—Enough! Don't stare at them like that! —Makarov ordered, scaring off the onlookers.

—Why so much noise? —asked a voice as someone descended the stairs. It was a red-haired man wearing a black coat with a bag slung over his back. He felt strange noticing how everyone was looking at him oddly—. What's going on? —Gildarts asked, glancing around.

Suddenly, he felt a small hit on his calf. For him, it was like a mosquito bite, but when he looked down, he found two little girls: one with a disgusted expression and the other filled with excitement.

—Sister Kara, is he our father? —Cana asked, her eyes sparkling.

—Tsk. Unfortunately, yes, Cana —Kara replied, annoyed.

—AAAAAH?! —Gildarts screamed in shock, while the others continued drinking and enjoying the show.

—Whose daughters are you? Sara? Naomi? Claire? Feena? Mary? Eliza? —Gildarts asked, looking at them in surprise—. No, no… the hair color is different… Emma, Lyra, Jean, Sydney, Kate, Yuko, Françoise…?

—HOW MANY FLINGS HAVE YOU HAD?! —everyone in the guild shouted, stopping Gildarts.

—W-wait! I know! You're the spitting image of Sylvia!... Same gender, though —Gildarts said quickly, looking at the two girls.

—Gildarts, this doesn't seem like the time for jokes —Makarov said, pointing at Kara, who was now looking at Gildarts with pure disgust. Cana no longer had the same excitement as before.

—Cana, don't get too close. He might have germs —Kara said, stepping back a few steps with her sister.

—Wait —Gildarts said quickly, approaching them. He knelt on one knee and hugged them both—. You're Cornelia's daughters… I'm sure of it.

—Let go of me. You disgust me —Kara said coldly, though her arms had no strength to push him away, as if even lifting them was impossible. Meanwhile, Cana looked at her sister with a smile.

—Cornelia is the only woman I've ever loved and the only one I married —Gildarts said, holding the two little ones gently, as if they would break—. Six years ago, when she left me because of my missions, I was devastated… I never thought she had two daughters of mine… —he lamented, feeling the weight of his absence.

—I'm sorry… for not being there for you. You even had to come find me at such a young age… —he murmured, his face full of regret.

The others in the guild watched them tenderly, some even with tears in their eyes.

Then, Kara raised her tiny arm and pulled away from Gildarts' embrace.

—We didn't come for you to take responsibility for us or anything… but Mom is sick, and we want you to help her —she said quickly.

—Dad, you have to help Mom —Cana added urgently, remembering the real reason for their visit.

Their words left Gildarts completely in shock. He looked at them closely as tears started falling from his eyes.

Without saying more, he hugged them tightly again.

—Even if I have to break myself into pieces… I'll go help your mother —he declared with determination.
