Synopsis
In a world ravaged by the invasion of the ‘SHADOWS’—beasts born of darkness that devour both land and soul—Kajiro Yamamoto finds himself standing amidst the ruins of a once-thriving city. Trapped in a desperate fight for survival, he is engulfed by an overwhelming, mysterious power that ignites within him, setting his body ablaze from the inside. As the SHADOWS close in on him, he unleashes an uncontrollable surge of black flames, obliterating everything in his path. Alone and confused, Kajiro soon realizes that the power he wields may be both a gift and a curse, as it begins to strip away his very identity. Just when he believes he’s lost everything, Riko Harada, a skilled warrior with icy blue eyes and a long sword, arrives to rescue him. She reveals that Kajiro is not alone in this fight—others have suffered the same fate and must now fight together to survive. With the city falling apart around them, Riko urges him to join her and learn how to control the destructive force coursing through his veins. As Kajiro follows Riko into a world full of darkness, ancient secrets, and brutal battles, he must confront the truth about his newfound power, the shadows that plague their world, and the mysterious past that binds them both. With every step, he finds himself questioning whether he is the hero the world needs—or a weapon that could bring about its destruction. In a world where the shadows rule, one man’s struggle to control his power will decide the fate of all.

Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1: the scream in the darkness

Kajiro Yamamoto stood at the corner of the city that was in ASHES due to the invasion of the 'SHADOWS', beasts of darkness. The screams and rumbles of war suppressed any remaining sounds while the lights began fading one by one; building after building crashing. The fear was overwhelming, yet something indicated that he was able to handle it. The remnants of his body were on fire, the feeling was overpowering and angering but her couldn't do anything to calm it down. It was as if his body had been set a blaze – from the inside.

The SHADOWS surrounded him, trapping him and ambushing at all angles. He watched them immerse themselves through the shadows of the night with malicious intent, hoping to feed on him. A wall was his only defense, which he resorted to in order to gather his bearings… At least for the moment. A feeling so different emerged and consumed him. This was not how it was meant to unfold. Frantic beats from the heart, conflicted thoughts swirling in the mind. "What is going on? Why am I... Fearing myself?" He thought but was never able to find the answer as the SHADOWS devoured the land.

In that very moment when the Shadows surrounded him, flames exploded outwards from his body. A jet of black fire engulfed everything around him. Panic surged through him, but he could also feel an overpowering strength blooming from within, as if a staggering power was running through him. After the flames calmed, he scanned his surroundings in a frantic manner, only to realize that he had obliterated everything in an area of multiple meters. The feeling of loneliness washed over him and he was puzzled to see everything had been burnt apart from him. He felt like...some sort of heavy power was trailing him, as it devoured his features and replaced them with an all-consuming nothingness, making it seem like he was losing his memories.

Then, without any warning, he was jolted awake by a soft, feminine voice.

"Are you alright?"

The one asking this question was Riko Harada. She was wearing light armor, brandishing a longsword and had sharp features along with icy blue eyes. There was some enigma about her, but something in her gaze led Kajiro to trust her, she must have suffered the same as him.

"You are not alone. As of now, we fight together. But you must follow me. It is imperative that you learn how to harness the power you possess."

He was rescued, but was still unsure of the kind of power that he had gained. Was it a gift or a curse? This question turned out to be much more complicated than he had thought.
