Chapter 28: The Unexpected Intervention
Ayanna's words hung in the air, and I could feel the weight of her gaze upon me. But before she could say anything else, three voices echoed through the clearing, their tones low and menacing.
"Ayanna, leave him alone," the voices said in unison.
I turned to see three figures emerging from the trees, their eyes fixed on Ayanna. They were tall and muscular, with skin that seemed to shift and ripple like the shadows themselves.
"Taiwo, Kehinde, and Adekunle," Mama Yagu said, her voice neutral. "I didn't know you three were in the area."
Taiwo, the apparent leader of the trio, stepped forward. His eyes seemed to burn with an inner fire, and his voice was like thunder. "We don't care about your mortal friend, Ayanna," he said. "But we won't let you disturb the balance of the Dyuka."
Kehinde, the second of the trio, nodded in agreement. His eyes seemed to gleam with a mischievous light, and his voice was like a rusty gate. "This is our domain, Ayanna," he said. "And we won't let you cause trouble here."
Adekunle, the third of the trio, folded his arms across his chest. His eyes seemed to bore into Ayanna's soul, and his voice was like a cold wind. "Leave now, Ayanna," he said. "And don't come back."
Ayanna's face twisted with anger, but she seemed to realize that she was outnumbered. With a snarl, she turned and disappeared into the trees, leaving the rest of us to wonder what had just happened.
What do you think?
