Chapter 31: The Guardians of the Forest
As I approached the massive tree, I could feel a strange energy emanating from it. The air around me seemed to vibrate with an otherworldly power, and I could sense that I was being watched.
Suddenly, three figures emerged from the shadows. They were tall and imposing, with skin that seemed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding foliage.
"Who are you?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
The central figure, a towering giant with leaves for hair, spoke in a voice that rumbled like thunder. "We are the guardians of the forest," he said. "And you, mortal, are trespassing on sacred land."
I swallowed hard, trying to think of a way to appease the guardians. But before I could speak, Mama Yagu's voice echoed in my mind.
"Ade, remember the lessons I taught you. The guardians of the forest are not to be trifled with. Show them respect, and they may yet grant you passage."
I took a deep breath and bowed my head, trying to convey the respect that Mama Yagu had advised. The guardians regarded me for a moment, then nodded their heads in unison.
"You have shown respect, mortal," the central guardian said. "But respect is not enough. You must prove yourself worthy to pass through our lands."
I steeled myself for the challenge ahead. What trials would the guardians set before me? And would I be able to overcome them?
What do you think?
