Synopsis
In a world dominated by narcissism and self-interest, people are increasingly drawn to the idea of heroism, not for the sake of others, but for the recognition and praise it brings. "Serving the community" has become little more than a facade-an excuse to boost one's ego. After all, why else would anyone go out of their way to help unless there were tangible rewards involved? This is the society we've built, but who's to complain? At least there are still people willing to do the right thing, even if their reasons are self-serving. Isn't that what really matters? Well, at least that's what Shayn tells himself.

Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Not The First Rodeo

The fury on Mr. Overmans's face was quite apparent. In the few minutes that had passed, Shayn had noticed the reddish hue on his face deepen by at least three shades, from the usual warm pink, to a maroon likened to the apple Shayn had for an afternoon snack. All Shayn did was sit there, staring into Mr Overman's beady yet seething eyes, thinking about his time studying the gradients color in Visual Arts class. He just couldn't bring himself to care. In fact, the words flying out of Mr. Overman's mouth did not even register in Shayn's ears, however it did start to become amusing, watching the little angry man crash out in silence. The urge to suppress a chuckle began to gnaw at him."I should probably try to listen, at least," he sighed to himself, before redirecting his attention to Mr. Overman. Like hitting the unmute button on a remote control, the decibels blasted, and Shayn's eardrums felt like they might burst." -AND WITH THAT SAID, NOT ONLY ARE YOU THE WEAKEST AND MOST USELESS HERE, BUT THREE TIMES, YOU HEAR? THREE TIMES YOU'VE RECEIVED THE SAME COMPLAINTS FROM PUBLIC HERO AFFAIRS AND-"Shayn hit the mute button again on his mental remote control. "Ah, yeah, that again," he thought to himself. A few seconds of dialogue was enough for Shayn to know it wasn't worth his energy to pay full attention to something he'd already heard countless times. After all, Shayn was as low-ranked as you could get in the ladder of his boutique hero firm. It was only natural that he'd take the most berating from his superiors, whether it was his fault or not. Well, technically, it was his fault. It always was. When push came to shove, people got hurt, lives were lost, someone had to take the fall, and Shayn was that man. The fall guy when shit hit the fan."I wonder if I'm getting fired this time as well", Shayn thought to himself, briefly losing eye contact with the retired hero exploding in real time, the ballistic fibre of his outdated suit struggling to hold back all the rolls of fat that heaved with each bellowing yell. "-AND SO, YOU'RE FIRED!".I guess that answers his question. Muscle memory kicked in, and Shayn immediately got up, walked over to his locker, and began to unpack his gear. He could still feel the innocuous hostility of Mr. Overman behind him, stalking him like a lion eyeing a deer, but the mute button remained firmly pressed in Shayn's head. This wasn't his first rodeo. And he simply couldn't bring himself to care.He knew the truth. And it didn't matter if others didn't.
