Looking down at his phone he opened his internet browser and found that is trending headline was about the population. The article read a little about the efforts to counteract the rapidly increasing population, but ultimately there is not a lot governments can do to stop people from having children without losing their democracies.
Scrolling back up to the top the man couldn't help but let out a small sigh, causing his short brown hair to flutter slightly. He uttered under his breath:
"So another billion, there was only 7 billion when I was young, but it only took between 9 years for the population to grow 3 billion."
The population of earth had been on an uncontrollable uptrend, most of this growth comes from the third world countries and its likely that the true population is far higher.
The man looked up at and through the giant glass window that his table was near. On the outside of the building it read: 'X College Research and Testing Laboratories'. Jack stood up and started to head towards his research lab to assist his professor on his newest project. Being the top of his major and only being in his 2nd year gave him a lot of opportunities in his chosen field of research, Biochemistry.
He didn't get more than a few steps away from his table before his head was pierced by an unknown voice.
"Your planet Earth has met the requirements to enter into the Universal Defense Organization. You will be put through a series of trials to determine if you are able to join the UDO. We wish you the best of luck."
The voice was foreign, but not robot-like which surprised Jack and almost gave him more terror that there was a person capable of speaking directly to his brain. Shortly after the voice finished talking the pain stopped and Jack looked around to find that he was not the only person that heard the voice.
Looking up towards the hallway where he was heading he saw a man in his 50's running towards.
"Jack! Did you just hear that?"
His professor kept running, but before reaching Jack a primitive spear was thrown through the large glass window that made up the front of the building. In an instant it broke the glass and pierced the chest of Jack's professor.
Watching the lifeless corpse fall to the ground he rushed back towards the table that he had been sitting at and flipped it over to hide himself from whatever attacker had thrown the spear.
Looking back at his professor he couldn't help but feel helpless, he was unable to react at all and could only watch as his mentor was killed. Jack was used to seeing blood as he had competed in MMA, but he was surprised how much different the feeling was when it came from the body of someone that he called a friend.
His mind went into overdrive and he realized that he couldn't focus on his professor and he needed to worry about himself. Peeking over the table he found students and faculty also hidden behind whatever objects they could find. He saw a few bodies lying near the window also pierced by spears.
A new voice appeared in his head this time being robotic.
[1st Trial: Survive the Night - X College is being overrun by monsters from another world, survive through the night and be rewarded with the Universe Soul support system.]
The voice talked quick, but Jack absorbed it quickly and peeked over the table again but this time out into the courtyard of the college. He found that people were being stabbed, bite, and ripped to death. Creatures from games and webnovels were running rampant outside.
'Maybe my nerd knowledge will come in handy after all.'
Although he couldn't make out most of the creatures he did identify what looked like goblins. The goblins were carrying spears and it didn't take a genius to see what had killed his professor.
Jack was brought out of his thoughts as he heard the sound of glass shattering and screams from below. A group of goblins broke through various points in the window and slaughtered the students below. Before he could move he heard another sound of glass shattering only to find in coming from behind him.
Below the window was a 1 meter tall wolf-dog like monster that was foaming at the mouth. It wasn't long before the wolf charged towards Jack. It's growls intensified quickly and the gravity of the situation was apparent.
The beast closed in on Jack, but not wanting to take it on with fists alone he ran towards the spear stuck in his professor.
Meeting halfway Jack went to grab the spear, but couldn't pull it out which allowed for the wolf to jump towards his leg and bit. Even with his fighting experience he found his self being unable to pull the wolf off his arm and it pushed him up against the railing of the balcony he had been on.
Fighting with his back to a wall had been worse for Jack and the remembered the distance from the balcony to the floor. Seeing as it could have been more that 4 meters he found that a fall would be his best chance for survival.
Leaning back he found himself hanging over the edge with just the wolf holding him. Swinging his legs up he locked them around the wolf and swung back hard, flipping the wolf over him. The wolf let go of him and struggled in the air but it was too late and Jack had used the wolf as a landing pad. Hearing the sounds of its bones breaking he looked at his wound, he was missing a chunk of muscle and his bone was visible, but the adrenaline stopped him from feeling anything.
When he looked up again he saw a goblin staring at him with devilish grin. It raised its spear and started to run at Jack.
