Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Thunder Dragon

Kael stood over the lifeless body of the frost dragon, his eyes scanning its frozen corpse with mild disinterest. His first time killing a dragon should have been more satisfying. But as the battle had progressed, he realized something.

The dragon wasn't weak. He was just too strong.

He had expected a grueling fight, maybe even a moment where he had to push himself past his limits. Instead, the dragon had barely lasted a few minutes against his sky spear and teleportation. Even with its superior physical stats compared to a level 50 human, it was nothing more than an overgrown lizard in the face of his magic.

His thoughts drifted to Nazarick, to the true monsters of this world. Would they be as disappointing as this dragon? No, he doubted it. Momonga was different. But if he wanted to stand on equal ground, he needed more.

More power.

His exp had risen to 18,660—enough to level up multiple times. But for now, he chose not to.

Ralvok Ironhide, the quagoa king, remained frozen in place, his warriors too terrified to move. Kael had slaughtered his entire army and a dragon in front of him. He knew what would come next.

Kael turned toward the king, his gaze unwavering. "You're going to take me to the dragon's lair."

Ralvok stiffened. His voice wavered. "The lair? Y-you wish to go there?"

Kael raised an eyebrow. "Was I unclear?"

The quagoa king quickly shook his head, forcing himself to regain composure. "Of course, great one. If it is your will, I shall lead you there." He hesitated before adding, "But… I must warn you, the lair is home to more than just a single dragon. It is said to be guarded by the offspring of the frost dragons, all raised to be warriors."

Kael smirked. "Good. I was hoping for more than one warm-up."

Ralvok gulped, but nodded. "Then… follow me."

The journey to the dragon's lair was a silent one. Kael rode atop Hamsuke, while the quagoa king and his remaining warriors moved cautiously ahead, leading the way through the icy tunnels. The temperature dropped the further they went, the air thick with the presence of lingering frost magic.

Kael's mind lingered on the battle from earlier. The dragon had barely posed a threat. He had expected the creatures of this world to at least challenge him, but it seemed that wasn't going to happen unless he actively sought out higher-level monsters.

He clenched his fist slightly. He needed stronger opponents.

Eventually, he sighed. There was no point in dwelling on it now.

Instead, he turned to another matter.

"System," he called, an idea forming in his mind. "Let's play the lottery."

"Would you like to do a 10 exp draw like before?"

Kael smirked. "No. Let's do ten 10 exp draws."

The system went silent for a moment.

"…You want to spend 100 exp on low-tier draws?"

Kael chuckled. "Are you questioning me?"

"No. Processing…"

A series of lights flashed before him as ten items materialized one after another.

Most of them were useless junk—a few broken trinkets, a useless potion, some weak magical herbs.

But then, among the mess, a single item stood out.

A top-level sword.

Kael picked it up, examining the blade. It was well-crafted, its edge gleaming with an unnatural sharpness, infused with an aura of magic. A fine weapon—for a swordsman.

Kael snorted. "What am I supposed to do with this?"

A magic caster had no use for a blade. The lottery was truly random, and this was proof of it. If he were a melee fighter, this would have been an incredible weapon. But to him, it was nothing more than an expensive decoration.

He tossed it aside.

Then, he saw something else.

A skill book.

He picked it up, his eyes scanning the title. Thunder Dragon – A 5th-tier magic spell.

Kael's eyes widened slightly. "I got this… from a 10 exp draw?"

The system remained silent.

Kael chuckled. He had only done a 1 exp draw previously, and he had expected nothing but trash from a 10 exp pull. Yet here he was, holding a 5th-tier spellbook.

He placed his hand on the book. Instantly, knowledge flooded his mind. The spell was powerful, allowing him to summon and control high-level lightning, shaped like a dragon's maw, capable of attacking multiple targets at once.

A dangerous spell.

He smirked. "Let's see how well it works."

By the time they reached the dragon's lair, he had a plan.

The lair was massive, a frozen cavern with thick walls of ice and a ceiling covered in jagged icicles. Within it, eighteen frost dragon offspring lay resting, their bodies coiled around the large space, their breath chilling the air.

Ralvok hesitated at the entrance. "This… is where I stop."

Kael didn't reply. He simply stepped forward into the lair, his magic flaring to life.

One of the young dragons noticed him first. It raised its head, growling. "Who dares trespass in our domain?"

Another dragon stirred. "A mere human… no, something else…"

Kael smiled. "I'm just here to test a new spell."

He raised his hand, mana surging around him.

"Thunder Dragon."

A massive serpentine dragon of pure lightning coiled around him before launching forward, striking into the nearest dragon.

Boom.

The beast howled in agony, its entire body convulsing as electricity surged through its form. Before it could even react, another bolt struck, frying another dragon in an instant.

The others roared, trying to charge him—but Kael teleported above them, appearing mid-air. With a wave of his hand, the thunder dragon split apart into multiple smaller bolts, striking down the dragons in rapid succession.

The lair filled with their pained screams.

One of the remaining dragons snarled. "You dare—!"

A sky spear shot through its skull, silencing it instantly.

Hamsuke, watching from a distance, trembled. "Thy power is… beyond even the mightiest of beasts, my lord…"

Kael didn't stop. He weaved his attacks together, alternating between Thunder Dragon and Sky Spears, wiping out all eighteen dragons with ease.

By the time the battle ended, the lair was silent.

His exp had jumped to 28,940.

He landed gracefully, dusting off his cloak.

He had gathered enough power.

Now, it was time to level up.

"System," he commanded.

The next chapter would begin with his ascension to greater power.
