Chapter 4 - (Chapter 4)

(Chapter 4)

The news had spread throughout the empire, and within a month, it had reached the ears of Kaelion Arvasyn. Driven by curiosity, he sought out Clarisse Faeloria at the Academy to confirm its truth. Clarisse answered Kaelion's questions calmly.

"So, you'll be marrying the Duke after we graduate?" Kaelion asked, his voice trembling slightly.

"Yes, Your Highness," Clarisse replied with a gentle nod.

Kaelion tried to remain composed, even as turmoil stirred within him. He attempted to advise Clarisse with a tone full of concern.

"I've heard all sorts of rumors about the Duke… You must know what kind of man he is. I hope your family will reconsider what will happen if you marry him. I'll speak to the head of the Faeloria family to make them think twice."

Clarisse offered a faint smile, though sadness was evident in her eyes. "Thank you, Your Highness, but my father has high hopes for this marriage."

Kaelion could only remain silent. The unease on his face grew, revealing the burden weighing on his heart.

He was reluctant to get more involved, yet concern began to take root in his heart. How could it not? Clarisse would be moving to the Northern border, a place known for its dangers, inhabited by barbarians and monsters. Though many claimed, and he himself had seen, that the region had become more prosperous, he still couldn't shake the anxiety gnawing at him.

"Are you sure you can accept this? Be honest with me—we are friends, and I will do my best for you. I can ask the Emperor for help to prevent you from being trapped in such a political marriage," Kaelion said seriously.

"Thank you, Your Highness. I have considered everything carefully, and after much thought, I've decided to follow my father's wishes. I do not want to disappoint him," Clarisse replied calmly.

Kaelion took a deep breath. "In that case, I have nothing more to say. Remember, if you ever face any problems, don't hesitate to come to me. Understood?"

Clarisse gave him a soft smile. "I understand, Your Highness."

During the holidays, Clarisse returned to her family estate to spend a week there. Upon her arrival, she found several letters from Lorcan Frostborne, the Duke of the North.

The letters were written with impeccable politeness and precision, reflecting the Duke's education and refinement, despite never having attended the Academy. Since a young age, Lorcan had taken on significant responsibilities, replacing both his father and brother, proving his ability to lead the harsh Northern territories, which often faced brutal barbarian attacks.

Only two months remained before Clarisse's graduation, and a wedding awaited her. She still found it hard to believe how quickly everything was happening. The marriage felt so sudden, as if Jonathan Faeloria wanted it all to be over as soon as possible.

Clarisse read Lorcan's letter once more, a faint smile on her lips. This time, along with the letter, there was also a beautiful bouquet of roses.

"The Duke must be very pleased, huh? He often sends you gifts!" Jonathan remarked with a knowing smile.

Clarisse returned her father's smile and nodded. She did not wish to argue. In her heart, she had decided to view Lorcan more positively. Everything would be fine, she thought, trying to reassure herself.

Seeing her parents' joyful smiles, warmth spread through her heart. She knew that, in this situation, the best choice was to yield and accept everything with an open heart.

Clarisse told herself that she would do her best. As long as everything remained peaceful, she would continue as expected. However, if things turned for the worse, her only option would be to speak to Jonathan and request a divorce.

Clarisse touched her forehead, smiling wryly. With determination, she pushed away the negative thoughts that had begun to creep into her mind.
