Crossing the forest was no easy task, the snow made progress difficult and the idea of knowing that they were running to safety while their companions faced danger did not help either. In the heavy steps of many, the whole weight of guilt, shame and disappointment with themselves weighed down, making progress a truly depressing agony.
Many others, however, saw this as an opportunity to flourish; if all those damned rankers died, they could shine... It was a selfish and dirty thought, but that was humanity, selfish and dirty especially in desperation and discomfort.
