Joanne focused on her food, trying to ignore the heavy silence between them. She still wasn't sure how to act around Alexander. He was cold, unreadable, and far too composed for someone who had just entered a contract marriage.
She decided to test the waters by asking him again. "So, what do you do for a living?"
Alexander barely glanced at her as he cut his steak. "Business."
That was it. No elaboration, no details.
Joanne frowned. "That's vague."
He smirked but didn't offer more. It was clear he wasn't going to explain.
The tension in the room grew, but before she could push further, he set down his fork and leaned slightly toward her.
"I have only one rule, Joanne," he said, his voice low and smooth. "Don't ask questions you're not ready to hear the answers to."
Her fingers tightened around her glass. What was that supposed to mean?
She was about to respond when a butler entered and whispered something to Alexander. His expression didn't change, but there was a sharpness in his eyes as he nodded.
Dinner was clearly over.
Alexander stood, buttoning his suit jacket. "Rest early. You start your role as Mrs. King tomorrow."
Before she could ask what he meant, he walked away, leaving her alone in the massive dining room.
Joanne exhaled slowly.
She had thought this marriage was just a simple contract.
But something told her… she had stepped into something far more dangerous.
She went back to her room, walked into the closest she found only two pairs of clothes, a night wear and a fantasy dress.
She picked up the night-wear and went into the bathroom. She felt so relaxed after washing .
she lay on the bed and everything that had happened to her, from her mother's treatment and losing the guy she had loved for 5 years.
The one that promised to stand by her.
Tears rolled down her delicate face. "Mother I will try to be strong for your sake." She said softly.
Alexander got home, while rolling his wheelchair pass her room he heard her crying softly.
He pushed the door slightly, and there she was laying on the bed coved like a ball, her shoulders shaking as soft crying sounds left her mouth.
His eyes narrowed.
He watched her for a while before going back to his room. He called his assistant. "I want to know everything about Joanne Baker and the Baker family, as soon as possible."
