In a dark room, a lonely guy that hasn't seen sunlight in years sat on a chair, staring at a screen.
He was playing a game, a game he was awfully familiar with - Star Dust.
A Rogue Like game with an infinite world and near infinite possibilities.
But... no matter how near-infinite the possibilities are, they are still finite. After playing the game for over 15 years it has indeed become quite boring.
His completion had been stuck at 99% for over 3 years, he couldn't figure out the final achievement that was still locked.
There were some guides to the game, however they were very limited and some even inaccurate. The wiki hadn't been updated for almost 5 years now.
The game was 15 years old, nobody played it anymore.
He himself never bothered writing any guides for anyone else, he only had a small notepad with some quick guides and steps for hard-to-do achievements and other things.
He was so experienced he already memorized the whole notepad, though he still kept it by his side, in case he found something new that he could write down.
Suddenly someone entered the room, it was his younger sister. "Mom wants to see you." she said with a frown as she looked at her brother.
The guy didn't pay her any attention, after all, he was busy playing his favorite game. Why would he bother listening to her?
"Hello?? Are you deaf?! Stand up, will you?" the girl shouted angrily. The guy cast her a quick glance with the side of his eye, he still didn't bother to get up.
The girl slammed the door as she left the room in fury. He could hear his sister telling their mom that she should just kick him out already.
Why should they waste her money and time on someone as worthless as him? Was probably what his sister thought.
However he didn't care. He was busy trying to achieve his life goal, completing this game.
The first time he launched the game was 15 years ago, on the day of release, the game was so magnificent back then, it was a revolution in the game industry.
The more he played the more hooked he became, why even bother living in the real world if this game was way more exciting?
At first it was nothing out of the ordinary, he just played the game, dying over and over again, still he didn't give up.
The first time he killed the final boss, he got his first achievement - [End? More like beginning!]
His eyes glowed, he was excited, a new button appeared on screen - Progression.
This documented all the achievements the game had and which he had gotten, there were over a thousand of them!
Time passed by, he stopped caring about the reality, dropped out of school, never got a job, and just leeched off his family.
He decided that he will get all of them, and enjoy this game to the fullest. However 15 years passed, his playtime was nearing 45.000 hours, and he still hasn't completed that goal of his.
Most of the achievements were easy to get, the icon hinted at what they required, hidden achievements could be completed doing quests, however to some achievements there were no hints, at least, he didn't find any.
Most of these achievements he had completed by accident while doing something else, but the last one, was too, a hidden achievement to which there were no clues.
He was at a loss, he had no idea what he didn't do already, he smashed the table "FUCK!" he was frustrated. His nerves started to give out and he repeated the same word over and over again while beating up his innocent table.
He was patient, very patient, nobody even reached 50% completion before they gave up. This is exactly why the game died off, no matter how great the game was, it was frustrating!
By no means was this an easy game, even after 45.000 hours he still could die to something random and stupid.
He regained composure, and went back to finish this run. Just as expected, nothing changed. After some time he just died, and the game over screen he had seen tens of thousands of times had popped up in front of him.
He smashed the table one final time before standing up from his chair. He took out a cigarette and went to the balcony, staring at the stars.
He was lost in thought, what would he even do once he did hit 100%? Just leave the game to never return? Play it again? His life was already ruined, all he had was this game.
He stood there in complete silence. His eyes were emotionless, when looking in his eyes one would he think he is dead.
There weren't many people outside, it was the middle of the night after all. His cold eyes threw one final look over the city as he finished smoking.
He was wondering whether he would ever finish the game, and if he could get back a normal life after he did.
He was broken, he broke himself. The only time he wasn't playing was when he was sleeping, eating, or smoking.
He had a wish, a wish that he could live in the reality of 'Star Dust', all he knew was that game, so what would his life without it be?
Looking at the sky he saw a Falling Star, in 'Star Dust' this was an event that could occur after doing a certain quest. Basically it could give the player a weapon he wished for.
He smirked, if a falling star could grant any wish, he would wish to finally get that final achievement.
Suddenly the door leading onto the balcony opened, it was his sister. He turned his head, looking at her with his dead eyes. She starred at him, she wanted to get rid of him!
Looking at her, he perfectly understood what she wanted to do, after all, she was openly hostile to him for years, and wished him death all the time.
There were many reasons, but he never deemed them important, after all, only the game was important to him, who would've thought that girl would actually do something so daring?
She starred at him "You ruined our lifes." he was still looking at her completely indifferently. She was disgusted, she had the idea, but she would never be able to actually follow it through.
They both knew that. She bit her lips, she walked onto the balcony with determination and full of resolve, however she couldn't do it. Their mother had suffered enough, losing her son would make her suffer even more.
He threw her a cigarette. "Helps with stress." he said with the same indifference as always.
She couldn't believe it, her eyes filled with tears and she shouted at him full of rage "Do you know what we had to go through because of you? Mom is sick and can't work, I had to drop out of school just to get a part time job, and I still have to pay for your food just so mom won't be sad!" she teared up even more and shouted louder "Even if I wanted to kick you out would you leave? No!" she came closer to him "We were broke to begin with, I wanted to get a good job so I we could actually live if only I worked. ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS WORK FOR HALF A YEAR, AND YOU REFUSED!"
He looked completely indifferently "So?"
She couldn't hold it in anymore, she cried out and pushed him. Only then did she realize what she did. "No!"
He wasn't surprised, his eyes were as lifeless as always. He only had a single regret, he heaved a sigh "So in the end, I couldn't achieve my life goal, and finish the game..."
On his computer screen
