Chapter 1 - Prologue

Chapter 1

First POV

The night was dark as ever, always striking fear into mortals as they rushed into their homes, whether stable or not, as they avoided the creatures of the dark ready to feast on those who didn't heed the warning. The unlucky ones are separated from the weak and strong, yet none of them were able to escape alive and only their bodies were about to feel the sunlight while their souls were led to their eternal prison.

The prison had never run out of space for the souls and yet the souls never spoke to each other as their dreads were visible on their faces. Unlike other souls that were granted eternal rest, they were allowed to continue the circle of life in another world by reincarnation or were brought back to their own world and turned into the very creatures that caused the end of their prosperous and peaceful life.

'Such a pitiful thing,' I thought.

The book was so interesting yet dark, it talked about a letdown and I couldn't even finish the book as the author stopped publishing it. 'My Dreams' was the name of the book. Each chapter had the undead and yet the main character could do nothing but watch the people he loved get either killed or eaten in front of him, and yet he was convinced that the situation was just a dream, as he woke up on a regular school day and the entire human population was fighting against monsters and demons.

He kept on trying to 'wake up' from the dream, it was his way of coping with the sudden change that occurred in his life. This way of thinking made him delusional and risk the lives of others around him, with the decision of him thinking the 'dream' was like a video game, that the people around him would go back to their original world. But this way of thinking made him lose his mind faster than the people who were suffering from the venom of the demons.

'He thought he could fight with imaginary powers, making him rush into battle without a plan and his companions would rush and take the hit for him and result in their deaths.'

The story went on until the main character had noticed that he was the one responsible for the deaths of his loved ones and didn't even realize it until everyone he cared about, the friends and allies he had formed, were brutally killed before him. The main character was the monster that actually killed his friends but didn't know as he kept cursing under his breath to avenge his loved ones' death.

The book ended at a stand still as he remembered every single action caused in his monster state and wept, but after he had cleared his mind, he was struck by a knife in his throat and closed his eyes hoping that he could finally wake up from the nightmare called life.

"Emma, put the book down."

An annoyed voice trembled through the classroom as I mentally blamed myself for forgetting that I was still in class with my classmates and was busy letting my mind slip away from my body. In other words, my body and mind have different priorities for me.

"Yes ma'am." I had closed my book hoping for the class to end soon, as my eyes kept looking at the clock every few seconds as it was the last class of the week, and it meant I could reread the book all over. It took forever for the class to finish, but the moment it struck three pm, my classmates didn't bother to listen to the parting words of the teacher.

'Why should I care?'

I will be enjoying a homework and project free weekend with no interruptions, hangouts, or parties, so I will be married to my book this weekend. Most people think that I am obsessed with this book. Excuse me for not being a video game or social media addict.

As I watched the last student leave the class with his bag and books, I opened my book once again for the twelfth time. I am joking, I lost count of how many times I opened the book and my teachers shouted at me to close it back.

I opened the first page again, as my eyes sparkled just like the first time I read it. Something in life never gets old and this is one of the things that will never get old for me. However, a bothersome person decided to rip the book from my hand and start teasing me.

"Beth, would you please release my book?"
