LISA'S POV
"Mum…" I called out.
"Wake up, mum. Please. Wake up. Mum." I whispered.
My mother's body was limp and lifeless in my arms. She was unconscious. Her eyes were closed, she wasn't moving and she wasn't talking.
"No. Please. Please, mum. Please, don't leave me. Please." I cried.
I couldn't help myself. Tears were flowing down my face. And I was screaming.
I was shaking her, trying to wake her up. But, it wasn't working.
She was just on my arms. So pale and cold.
I was scared.
"Somebody, please. Help. Help." I shouted.
My mind was running wild. I didn't know what to do.
"Someone help. Help. Help." I screamed. "Help me please."
The driver quickly got out of the car and ran over to us.
"What's wrong, ma'am?" He asked.
I didn't even hear him.
"What happened, Miss?" He asked again.
I turned to look at him. He was standing right next to me, staring down at us.
"Something's wrong with her. I can't wake her up. She's not responding. She's not moving." I said, and then, I looked back down at her.
"Please. Help me." I pleaded.
"Ok. Just stay here. The hospital is just right over there. Don't move. Let me alert the staff. They will come and get her." The driver replied.
And then, he ran off.
I stayed there, hugging my mother's cold, limp and lifeless body.
"Mum. Please, wake up. Please." I begged.
"Don't leave me, mum. I need you." I said.
I kept saying the same thing over and over again. My head was bent and I was still crying. I was caressing her hair and hugging her tight.
I was shaking.
My mother was my whole life. She was my world. She was the only one left in the world that cared about me. The only person, who truly loved me and wanted to be with me.
After my father left, she was the only family member that was still there. Even though, she was sick and struggling, she still loved me. She still put her happiness aside for mine.
I couldn't lose her. I was scared and anxious. But, I tried to remain calm.
I kept talking to her, hoping that she would respond. Hoping that she would open her eyes.
My hands were cold. I felt so helpless and useless.
"Please, mum. Please wake up." I cried.
"Please, don't leave me." I whispered.
Then, suddenly, I saw a group of paramedics. They had a stretcher with them.
"What's the problem?" A nurse asked.
"S-She …She just collapsed. I couldn't wake her up." I stuttered.
"Please, help her. I-I…I don't know what's wrong." I added.
"Okay. We'll take her." One of the paramedic said.
And then, two other paramedics came over.
They were men and they both had uniforms on.
"Hello, ma'am." One of them said.
"We are going to need you to release her so we can take her. Can you do that?" The other asked.
I couldn't say or do anything. I was so afraid and terrified. But, I had to let her go.
So, slowly, I pulled away and the paramedics lifted her off the ground and placed her on the stretcher.
"You can come with us. Let's go." One of the paramedics said.
And then, the four of them went off.
They carried the stretcher with them, pushing it fast.
And, I followed closely behind.
They led my mum into the hospital and towards the emergency room.
I was so confused. I couldn't think straight.
My mind was running wild.
Why did she just collapse? Was it because of the cancer? Or because she had been outside for so long?
I blamed myself for going to the mansion.
I should have just stayed and looked after her. I should have made sure that she was safe.
If anything happened to her, it would be my fault.
Because, I abandoned her. Just like my dad had. He had abandoned us and left her all alone.
She was left with me. And, now, I had done the same thing.
The money was important, yes. But, nothing was more important than my mother.
So, I shouldn't have gone. I should have stayed with her. And now, she was dying and I was going crazy. I was going insane.
I was still following the paramedics when I heard someone call my name.
"Lisa Smith."
I turned back to see an older man with white coat and square glasses. His hair and beards were white-grey and he was wearing a black stethoscope.
I knew who he was. He was one of the doctors that used to treat my mother.
He was the one, who diagnosed her with cancer.
"Doctor George." I said and walked towards him.
"Lisa, What.." He tried to speak but I cut him off.
"How could you? What sort of hospital is this? How could you guys kick my mother out." I yelled. My eyes were red and swollen from crying.
"Lisa. Please calm down." He replied.
"Calm down? Calm down, Doctor George. My mother was out there on the streets for hours. Because of you guys stupid and unethical rule. How could you kick her out, knowing how sick she is?" I cried.
I was shouting and everyone in the hospital was staring at me. But, I didn't care.
I didn't care. My anger blinded me.
"Miss Smith, right?" I heard a doctor say my name. He was tall and he had black hair and a black moustache.
"Please lower your voice. Or I will have to ask you to leave." The doctor said.
"Lower my voice? Leave? Are you serious? That's what you're asking me right now?" I scoffed.
"This is a hospital. This is a place where sick people come to get better. Not a place to turn people away." I cried.
"Ma'am. You are creating a scene and disturbing the peace. And beside, the last time I checked, we aren't running a charity here. You and your mother have no insurance and also no means of paying. So, yes, she got kicked out." The doctor said.
His words were harsh and cruel.
I had never been spoken to like that before. Like I was trash or worthless. Like, my life and existence didn't matter.
"Excuse me?" I whispered.
I could feel the tears burning the back of my eyes.
"We are a hospital. With hundreds of doctors, nurses and other employees. We have an entire team and staff that takes care of our patients. We don't just take in every person that comes in here. We have a responsibility. And the best way we can help is, by focusing our resources and energy on those, who are willing to pay and can afford it." The doctor continued.
"So, if you don't have any money to pay for your mother's treatment. I'm sorry but, there's nothing else we can do." He added.
I was stunned. Speechless.
He was so cold and heartless. It was like, he was incapable of feeling emotions or caring about the plight of other people.
How could someone like this be a doctor or work in a hospital?
I was just about to yell and lash out at him. When, the man who had driven me there came up and stood next to me.
He brought out a card and handed it over to the doctor.
"This is an Amex Black Card. ID. It belongs to Mr Jackson. Mr Xavier Jackson. I am his personal driver and he instructed me to give this card to you, Doctor. This should cover everything. The debts, the treatments…everything." The driver explained.
"Also please, assign her mother to the best room in the hospital. The VIP room, if you would. And make sure only the best doctors and nurses are assigned to her. " He added.
I couldn't believe my eyes or my ears.
The driver was giving him an American Express Black Card. The most expensive and luxurious credit card in the world.
All the doctors and nurses were staring at him. They were staring at the driver. At the card.
They were all wide-eyed and speechless.
Even the doctor with the black moustache had a surprised look on his face.
He was shocked. He took the card from the driver and examined it.
"This is...this is really an Amex Black Card. Are you certain, this is for her mother's treatment?" The doctor asked.
"Yes, Sir. Anything and everything. The bill should go to Mr Jackson." The driver nodded.
"O-Okay." The doctor said and took the card.
He bowed his head. "I'm so sorry for any inconvenience. It was a misunderstanding. But, rest assured, the best doctors and nurses will be on your mother's case and we will do our best to save her life." He said.
The doctor sounded nervous and almost apologetic.
Then he started giving instructions to the nurses and the paramedics.
They immediately went into action. They wheeled my mum into the emergency room and the doctor with the moustache followed behind.
He glanced back at us and said, "We will do our best to make sure she's okay." And then, he left with the others.
I was still trying to process everything that was happening. It was all happening so fast.
This was a miracle. A dream. It was unbelievable. I couldn't comprehend it.
I turned to the driver and smiled at him.
"Thank you so much." I said.
"Oh don't thank me, Miss Smith. You should be thanking, Mr Jackson. Honestly, I don't know why he decided to do this. He has never done this before. Never. I don't know what you did to deserve this but, it must have been something." The driver spoke.
I swallowed hard at his words. Ofcourse, I knew why and Jackson had done this.
This was part of our deal.
He had kept his word and had ensured that my mother would get the best medical care. Even going as far as paying all our debts.
This was a relief and I was happy.
But, at the same time, I was also scared.
I knew exactly why Mr Jackson had done this and what he expected from me.
The deal.
************************************
I stayed over at the hospital for a long while. I wanted to be sure my mother was in a stable condition before I head back to the mansion.
The doctors and nurses that had been assigned to her had been in the emergency room for hours.
I sat in the waiting room of the hospital. Hoping and praying to God that everything would be fine.
Suddenly, the doors to the emergency room opened and the doctor with the moustache stepped out.
"Miss Smith. Your mother is stable now. But, I'm afraid she's still unconscious and still in critical condition." He said.
"Critical condition? W-What do you mean?" I asked.
The doctor cleared his throat and began to speak.
"Your mother collapsed because of dehydration and exhaustion. But, her condition was made worse because of the cancer. It's spreading rapidly. Now that she's back in the hospital and is in a much better care than she was before because of the payment, we will be doing everything we can to save her." He explained.
"She will start chemotherapy and radiation treatment as soon as possible. But, I have to warn you, these treatments are not a hundred percent guarantee. And with your mother's case, the cancer has already spread through most of her body. There is no way of telling how the treatments will go. But, we will try our best. I assure you." The doctor continued.
He had a concerned look on his face. And his tome of voice wasn't like it was before. It was softer and filled with sympathy.
I guess money really changes people.
He seemed much more humble and approachable now. And he had more respect for me than before.
"Thank you so much, Doctor. Please do everything you can for my mother." I replied.
"Yes, don't worry. The nurses are setting her up in a private room. It's one of the best rooms in the hospital and is equipped with all the facilities you will ever need." He said.
"You don't have to worry about anything again, Miss Lisa. With the money, Mr Jackson had provided, your mother will have access to the best medical care and will be given the highest priority." He added.
"Wait, what do you mean, highest priority?" I asked.
"Well, we usually only treat our VIP clients in these rooms and also provide them with the best medical care. Mr Jackson is paying a whole lot of money for your mum. And that alone makes her a VIP." The doctor replied.
"Okay." I sighed.
"Now, please, don't worry. Your mother is fine and will be okay." He assured me.
"Thank you so much, Doctor. Can I see her?" I asked.
"Yes, you can." The doctor replied. "She's in room 45, on 10th floor, reserved for VIPs. Take the elevator, I'm sure by the time you get there, they should have moved her in. You can spend as much time with her as you want." He said.
"If you would please excuse me. I have to attend to other patients. But, my assistant doctor will be taking over. He will be in charge of your mother's care from now on." He added.
"Ok." I nodded.
And then, the doctor walked off.
I quickly left the waiting room and headed straight for the elevators.
There were two. One going up and one going down.
I took the one going up and pressed the 10th floor button.
As I stepped in, I could feel my heart beat slowly returning back to normal. I wasn't as stressed as I was before.
I breathed a sigh of relief and rested against the walls of the elevator.
Even though my mum was still unconscious and her condition was not fully stable. I was happy.
At least, she was in a much safer place now. She wasn't alone on the street anymore. She was now in the hospital. But not just that, she was now a VIP patient.
She was going to get the best treatment and care possible.
So, it didn't matter. Even if the treatments weren't a hundred percent effective, she was going to get the very best medical care and attention.
And, the cancer would still be treated.
I was so relieved.
I had Mr Jackson to thank. If it wasn't for him and his money, we would still be in the same situation we were before.
My mother would have died. But, he had saved her. He had kept his end of the bargain. And now, I had to keep mine.
Suddenly, the elevator dinged and the doors opened.
I was now on the 10th floor.
It was different from the other floors. Everything was shiny, bright and looked so new.
There was a large space, which led into two different hallways. One was to the left and the other was to the right.
At the very front of the hall, there was a huge sign, that read, 'RESERVED FOR VIPS.'
I walked down the hall and headed towards room 45.
I reached the door and knocked twice.
"Come in." A soft voice said.
I pushed open the door and stepped inside.
There were a female nurse there. Her black hair was tied in a bun. She was wearing a white coat and was checking the machines and monitors attached to my mum's body.
"Hello." She greeted, as soon as she saw me.
"Hello." I replied.
"I'm Lisa Smith and I'm here to see my mother." I told.
"Oh. Nice to meet you, Miss Smith. My name is Samantha Davies. I'm your mother's primary nurse and I will be taking care of her." The nurse introduced herself.
She stretched out her hand and we shook.
"Hi. Thanks for helping my mother." I smiled.
"Oh no. I'm just doing my job. And trust me when I say you don't have to worry about anything. Your mum is in the best care possible. Everything is taken care of. I will be in charge of making sure that her needs are met and she gets the best care." She told me.
"Yes, the doctor told me." I nodded.
"I see. So, what brings you here? Is there something you need, Miss Smith?" Nurse Samantha asked.
"Oh, no. I was just checking in, before I leave. Can you please give me a little privacy. I just want to talk to my mum and spend some time with her." I answered.
"Of course. I will leave you to it. Just ring the bell if you need me. I'll be outside." The nurse replied.
"Ok. Thank you." I said.
The nurse nodded and exited the room.
As soon as she was gone, I walked over to my mother.
She was lying on the bed and her eyes were closed. She looked a lot better than she did before.
Though her skin was still pale and her breathing was ragged. But, she didn't look like she was about to die anymore.
There was an oxygen mask on her face and several machines and monitors were connected to her.
They were monitoring her heartbeat, her blood pressure and other things.
I bent down next to her and took her hands into mine.
"Mum. It's me. I'm here. " I whispered.
Her hand was cold. And she was unconscious.
I knew she couldn't hear me or talk to me.
But, I still wanted her to know that I was there.
"Please, mum. You have to fight. You have to stay alive. I promise. I will take care of everything. But, you have to promise me. That you will fight. That you will get better." I said.
"I'm going back to the mansion. To work." I turned towards the clock in the room. It was 6am. I had spent the entire night in the hospital.
I breathed deeply and continued to speak. "Let me tell you about my boss, mum. His name is Mr Jackson. Mr Xavier Jackson. He's the most arrogant and egoistic man, I have ever met. He has an ego the size of his head." I chuckled.
"But he's also so hot and sexy mum. He's the most handsome man I've ever seen in my life. And we kissed mum." I said.
I laughed and shook my head.
"I know if you were awake. You would yell at me for kissing my boss. But, honestly, the kiss was so amazing. It was like, heaven and paradise. It was the best kiss ever. Oh God! And his touch….I can't even begin to explain."
Then I sighed.
"We also made a deal mum. I didn't want to at first but I had to. It was the only way to save you. I made a deal to have sex with him for a night, if he paid for your treatment. And I can't believe he did it. Mum, he paid for everything. For the debts and for your treatment. Everything." I spoke.
I held her hand and leaned closer.
"Mum, I know, if you were awake right now. You would tell me that I shouldn't have taken the deal. You would tell me it was wrong and that I would only end up getting my heartbroken. But I don't care mum. Everything I did. I did it for you. And I don't regret it." I said.
"But, mum, listen. This is a one-time thing. I know. After the deal is over, I won't do it again. But, this is fine. He saved your life. And besides, I won't fall in love. That's the last thing on my mind." I assured her.
"I promise mum. I won't fall in love with Mr Jackson. No matter what happens between us. I will never fall in love with him." I added.
