Chapter 1 - The Rooftop Sanctuary

The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm golden hue over the sprawling cityscape. Zazm Mystic reclined against the cool, weathered concrete of the school rooftop.

His black hair and black eyes gave him a cool look, his hair was waving over his eyes due to the wind,he was just your average highschool kid, skipping class.

In his hand he held a book, with the title 'Quantum mechanics'. The pages fluttered in the gentle breeze, filled with diagrams and equations that danced in his mind like a symphony of possibilities. He had always found solace up here, away from the noise of the bustling hallways and the relentless drone of teachers.

Creakk

As he turned the page, the door to the rooftop creaked open, and a familiar figure stepped out, silhouetted against the bright sky. Jahanox Nova, with his neatly combed hair and a serious expression, squinted against the sunlight.

He looked like the embodiment of a honor student, his love for his grades could simply be seen in his gaze. He fixed his glasses and went towards where his friend was sitting.

"Zazm!" Jahanox called, his voice a mix of exasperation and frustration. "You can't keep skipping class like this! The hell are you even reading?" He asked Zazm in an irritated tone.

Zazm looked up, a carefree smile spreading across his face. "Just diving into the mysteries of the universe," he replied, holding up the book. The cover featured a swirling galaxy, hinting at the complex concepts within.

"It's about quantum entanglement. Can you believe that particles can be connected over vast distances? It's like magic!" Before Jahanox could say anything, Zazm continued with a playful and mocking smirk,

"Oh~~ I forgot, you aren't smart enough to understand such things"

Jahanox rolled his eyes, but a hint of a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. "You and your 'magic.' You know, some of us are trying to pass our classes, right? We have a math test in an hour, and you're up here contemplating the cosmos."

He plopped down beside Zazm giving him a death stare, "Oh and as for who is more stupid, I think we will find out when the test results will come out."

Zazm chuckled, flipping the book closed. "Math is just numbers, Jahanox. This"—he gestured to the book—"is about understanding the universe! Why would I want to waste my time on equations when I can explore the fabric of reality?

Now don't get me wrong, I love maths and, I always perform well in it but, I just don't understand why the hell do we have to study English, ethics and stuff like history.

I don't care what happened in the past, and I already speak English. So, why do I have to learn more?" He leaned even more against the wall with an irritated expression.

"Because," Jahanox replied, standing up again, "if you don't pass the exams, you aren't going to do shit. I don't understand how you can ace every math test but you somehow managed to fail every other subject."

He glanced sideways at Zazm as he started leaving towards the door, "You see you would get stuck here, you won't be able to continue with your dreams, if you can't get into a good college. Your love for maths and physics will stay here, if you don't focus on the other subjects."

Zazm sighed, the weight of Jahanox's words settling in. "I know, I know. But it's just so much more interesting to think about black holes and time travel than to memorize stuff like 'What happened to an austrain after being rejected from art school.' Besides, I want to understand the universe!"

"Understanding the universe starts with understanding the world. You can't just hide inside the books all day. I know for you it won't be hard to memorize and get good grades. Your problem is that you simply don't want to do it. You don't like those things, so you just decided to leave them. That's not how this works."

Zazm considered this, the allure of the book still tugging at him. "Maybe I could bring my books to class? I could read during breaks or something. That way, I wouldn't miss out on the fun stuff."

"Now you're talking," Jahanox said, a grin breaking through his serious demeanor. "Just promise me you'll at least try to pay attention during the lectures. You might find something interesting in the curriculum too."

Zazm got up from his place, "Alright, fine I'll pay attention to the lectures. Maybe, history won't be that bad, afterall. And yeah! You are right, I had to get good grades to get into a good college."

"Yeah! You should also try to get some friends, how long are you going to keep bugging me for" Jahanox asked Zazm with a mocking smile and a tone filled with amusement.

"The hell do you mean, I don't have any more friends? I do have them and besides not like you have any either." Zazm retorted with a rude tone.

"Just for your information, I talk to all the students in the class and even help them study sometimes. So, no I have friends."

"Yeah! If that's how you considered friendships, I'll be friends with entire 1st and 3rd years. Since, I always play basketball and football with them."

The atmosphere that was quite serious a moment ago between them that made Zazm think about future was now turned into a competition of insults and mockery.

Zazm put his hands behind his head, he looked at Jahanox who was walking infront of him and asked, "Anyways, did you got a girlfriend or something?"

Jahanox looked back in a surprised way,"huh? The fuck made you think that?"

"Well, your mother told me that now you sleep on time. Instead, of playing games and also takes up your time to get dressed. I mean, I agree with that, back in the middle school you were like that gloomy kid with weird hair and untidy uniform. To whom, only grades mattered and you would kill someone to get first position."

"That mother of mine." Jahanox said massaging his temples, "And no, I don't have time for things like romance, right now. I'm busy with my grades. And I just thought it will be better to look more like a human." His tone this time was more serious.

"I already knew you would say that. So, I already said that to your mom. But, what exactly do you mean by you aren't interested in romance?" Zazm jumped down the stairs getting side by side him, his eyes were shining just like a predator who found his prey.

"You say that you aren't interested in girls and stuff but we both know it's the other way around."

"You are quite mistaken there. Yesterday, Emilia and Raiden asked me to help them prepare for today's test. And I'm sure, I can get any girl, I want" Jahanox said his tone serious that could've made anyone think he wasn't lying. But for Zazm it was just another hunt.

Pfft...

Zazm burst into laughter after hearing him say that.
