Chereads / Grayson's Obsession / Chapter 5 - Chapter 4

Chapter 5 - Chapter 4

Shadows and Secrets

The night felt endless. Every time I closed my eyes, all I could see were flashes of the gala—the blinding lights, the screams, the blood. It was a nightmare I couldn't escape, a reality that had crashed into me with the ferocity of a storm.

I sat in the dimly lit safe house, my hands trembling as I clasped them together tightly. My mind was still reeling from everything that had happened, from the brutal, unexpected attack on my family. I couldn't stop thinking about the gunshots. The way they echoed in my ears. My parents, taken from me in the blink of an eye.

But I wasn't allowed to grieve, not yet. Not when I was still alive.

The door to the room creaked open, and my heart skipped a beat. Julian stepped inside, his face hard and unreadable. He didn't speak at first, just stood there watching me as if he were trying to read my soul.

"Persephone," he said finally, his voice calm but laced with urgency. "You need to be ready."

I blinked, confused. "Ready for what?"

"Maximus is on his way. We need to move."

The name sent a cold shiver down my spine. Maximus Grayson.

I had heard rumors about him. Whispers of his temper, of his power, of his ruthlessness. He was the youngest of the Grayson brothers, but no less dangerous than his older siblings. There was a mystery about him, a darkness that I couldn't fully understand, and I had no desire to. But now, he was my only connection to survival.

I stood up quickly, my legs unsteady as I tried to make sense of what was happening. "Maximus?" I repeated, almost to myself. "Why do I need to meet him?"

Julian sighed, his eyes narrowing as he took a step closer to me. "Because he's the only one who can help you right now. He's the one who's going to protect you from whatever comes next."

Protect me?

I swallowed hard, my throat dry. "What do you mean 'whatever comes next'? What's happening, Julian? Why did they do this? Why did they kill my parents?"

Julian didn't answer right away. Instead, he just looked at me, his gaze flickering with something I couldn't place. "You don't know the whole story yet, Persephone. But Maximus will explain. He's the one who knows what's really going on."

I felt my stomach tighten at his words. "What do you mean I don't know the whole story?"

But Julian remained silent, his eyes diverting to the door as if he were expecting someone.

A loud knock echoed through the room. Julian didn't flinch. Instead, he nodded at me and walked to the door. He opened it to reveal Darius, his older brother.

"Maximus is on his way," Darius said, his voice low, authoritative. There was something in his tone that told me he wasn't here to chat. "We need to go."

"Where are we going?" I asked, my voice shaky. I had no idea who to trust anymore. The world I once knew had crumbled, and I had no choice but to follow.

"Safehouse," Darius replied shortly, glancing at Julian. "It's safer there for now."

I didn't argue. I just nodded, feeling the weight of everything pressing down on me. We left the room, the door clicking shut behind us, and made our way down the hallway. The air in the safe house was thick with tension, and the silence between us was suffocating. I had so many questions, but I couldn't bring myself to ask them.

As we stepped into the elevator, the small space seemed to close in around me. My pulse raced, the uncertainty of it all gnawing at my insides. What was going to happen next? Was I going to be safe? Was Maximus really the answer to all of this?

The elevator doors opened to the underground garage. My eyes immediately scanned the space, my heart skipping a beat when I saw the black car parked by the far wall.

Maximus Grayson.

I had never seen him in person, but I could feel his presence. It was almost suffocating, like the air itself grew heavier the closer we got to him. I was aware of every step I took, every breath I took.

Julian led the way, walking ahead of me, but I felt Darius behind me, his large frame looming like a shadow, his eyes scanning the area. I couldn't help but feel that something—someone—was watching us.

When we reached the car, the door opened, and a figure stepped out. My breath hitched in my chest as I finally laid eyes on Maximus Grayson.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, exuding an aura of danger. His dark hair was messy in a way that somehow made him look even more intimidating, and his piercing eyes, dark as night, locked onto mine immediately. There was something unreadable in his gaze—something cold, yet it burned through me with an intensity I couldn't ignore.

I froze for a moment, caught off guard by the sheer presence he radiated. His eyes flicked briefly to Julian, who nodded curtly, before he turned back to me.

"You must be Persephone," he said, his voice low and steady, like gravel being ground beneath his boots.

I didn't respond right away. I didn't know how. All I could do was nod, my heart beating louder than the sound of my own thoughts.

Maximus took a step toward me, and for a second, I thought he might say something else, but then he didn't. He just reached past me, opening the door of the car with one fluid motion.

"Get in," he commanded, his voice laced with an authority that left no room for argument.

I hesitated for a moment, my mind still racing with questions. But when I looked back at Julian and Darius, both of them nodded, their expressions grim.

I had no choice but to obey.

I climbed into the car, and Maximus slid in next to me. The door slammed shut, and for a moment, all I could hear was the sound of my own breathing, sharp and uneven. I tried not to glance at him, but I could feel his presence like an invisible weight beside me. His body was tense, like he was always ready for a fight. I felt like I was sitting next to a storm, just waiting for it to unleash.

The engine roared to life, and we sped off into the night, leaving the chaos behind.

But I knew deep down that the storm wasn't over.

It was just beginning.
