Chapter 6 - Chapter 5

Into the Unknown

The car's tires screeched against the pavement as we sped through the dark streets, the world outside a blur of shadows. Maximus sat beside me, his presence like a storm pressing against my skin. I couldn't shake the feeling that his every movement was calculated, controlled. He was the calm before the chaos, the darkness before the storm.

I couldn't stop glancing at him, even though I tried not to. There was something magnetic about him, something dangerous, and for some inexplicable reason, I found myself drawn to it. But I knew better than to get too close. This was not the kind of man I could afford to trust.

Maximus turned his head slightly, catching my eye. For a split second, his lips curled up into a knowing smirk, as if he could read my thoughts. The intensity in his gaze made my stomach twist.

"You look tense," he said, his voice smooth, like velvet against sharp stone. "I'm not gonna bite, Persephone."

I felt my pulse spike. He was too calm. Too sure of himself. "I'm not tense," I said quickly, my voice betraying me. "I just... don't understand why I'm here."

Maximus leaned back in his seat, folding his arms across his chest as if he was settling in for a long conversation. "You don't need to understand everything right now. Just know that I'm here to make sure you're safe."

Safe. It was such a simple word, but it didn't feel that way when he said it. The way his eyes never left mine made it hard to believe that he was trying to protect me. There was a darkness to him that was hard to ignore, a side of him that felt like it could swallow me whole.

"Why do I need protection?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "I don't even know who the enemy is, Maximus. I don't know what's going on, why my parents were killed..."

Maximus' jaw tightened, and for the briefest moment, something flickered in his eyes—something that could've been pain, or maybe just anger. "You're not ready to know yet, Persephone. Trust me, you'll find out soon enough."

I clenched my fists in my lap. "But why not now? Why wait?"

"Because some things are better left untold for now," he said, his voice low, controlled. "It's safer that way."

I wanted to argue. I wanted to demand answers. But something in his gaze made me hold back. There was a storm brewing beneath the surface of his calm demeanor, and I wasn't sure if I was ready to face it.

The car slowed as we turned down a narrow street. My heart began to race again. The streets here were quieter, the buildings darker. The safe house, I realized. We were getting closer.

Maximus didn't say anything as we approached the building. He simply opened his door, stepping out without waiting for anyone else. Julian and Darius followed behind him, and I hesitated before stepping out of the car, my feet feeling like lead.

As I walked toward the entrance, Maximus was just a step ahead of me, always leading, always in control. His presence loomed over me like a shadow I couldn't escape. I couldn't help but wonder if this was what my life had become: running from the past, running from death, and now, running into the unknown with a man who scared me more than the danger itself.

The door to the safe house opened with a soft click, and we stepped inside. It was colder than I expected, the air thick with tension, like the walls themselves held secrets.

A tall, older man with silver hair stood near the staircase, his expression unreadable. His eyes immediately locked onto mine, and I froze.

"Maximus," the man said, his voice a gravelly whisper. "She's here."

Maximus nodded once, his gaze never leaving mine. "Good. Keep her safe. I'll be back in a few."

Before I could ask where he was going, Maximus turned on his heel and strode away, disappearing down the hallway with Julian and Darius following behind him. I stood frozen, unsure of what to do. The silence in the room was suffocating, and the uncertainty was almost worse than the danger outside.

The older man—someone I assumed was an ally, though I didn't know his name—approached me slowly. "You must be Persephone," he said, his tone measured but kind. "I'm Anton. I'm here to make sure you stay safe."

I nodded stiffly. "Thank you."

"You don't have to thank me. We're all just trying to stay alive, one day at a time." Anton's eyes softened slightly as he observed me. "But you need to rest. It's been a long night for you."

I shook my head, the weight of everything still too much to bear. "I'm not tired. I need to know what's going on. What happened to my parents? Why did they have to die?"

Anton's face hardened, and for the first time since I'd met him, I saw something in his eyes that mirrored my own pain. He didn't answer me right away. Instead, he placed a hand on my shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze.

"Rest first," he said softly. "The answers will come. But for now, take a moment. You'll need your strength for what's to come."

I wanted to scream. I wanted to demand the truth. But I knew he was right. I couldn't keep running on empty. I had to be smart about this. I had to survive.

And the only way to do that... was to trust Maximus Grayson, the man who seemed to be both my salvation and my biggest danger.

I couldn't deny it—I was already tangled in his web, and there was no going back.
