Chereads / The Ember Of Eternity / Chapter 4 - The Path of the Seeker

Chapter 4 - The Path of the Seeker

The journey toward the Seeker's Sanctuary was long, winding through desolate landscapes and towering mountains, where the air grew thin and the cold was biting. Dain followed Velithar and the rest of the Seekers in silence, his mind racing with questions about the power within him, the Ember, and the trial he had just faced.

The Seeker's Order had always been a mystery to the world—an ancient group of warriors and scholars who had dedicated their lives to studying the Ember, the source of unimaginable power that could either elevate or destroy its wielder. They had their secrets, and Dain was now part of that secret world.

As they climbed higher, the landscape began to change. The ground turned to stone, with strange markings etched into the surface, as though the earth itself carried the memory of forgotten gods. Towering spires of rock loomed overhead, casting long shadows as the group entered a valley where the very air seemed to hum with an unnatural energy.

"This place…" Dain murmured, feeling the pulse of power in the air. "What is this place?"

"This is the Sanctuary of the Seekers," Velithar answered without looking back. "It is both our refuge and our prison. Here, the Ember can be tamed, but it also has the power to break you."

Dain looked at the darkened peaks around them. He could feel it—the oppressive weight of centuries of history in this place. It was not just a sanctuary, but a test ground, a place where only the most worthy would emerge transformed.

As they reached the base of a massive stone tower, Velithar turned to face him.

"Before we proceed, you must understand something important, Dain," Velithar said, his eyes sharp. "The Ember is not a gift. It is a trial. To wield it, you must sacrifice what you hold most dear. Power like this comes at a cost, and many have failed before you."

Dain narrowed his eyes. "I don't fear the cost."

Velithar's gaze lingered on him for a moment before he nodded. "Then come. The first step of your training begins now."

The group entered the tower, and Dain was struck by the sheer presence of the place. The walls were lined with ancient tomes and arcane relics, each glowing faintly with a light that seemed to pulse with the same rhythm as the Ember in his chest.

They climbed the spiral staircase, reaching the highest floor where a massive stone altar stood at the center of the room. The air here was thick with energy, and Dain could feel the Ember reacting to it, thrumming in anticipation.

"Sit," Velithar commanded, pointing to the stone slab before the altar.

Dain hesitated for a moment but obeyed, sitting cross-legged in front of the altar. Velithar placed his hands on the stone, and the room began to hum with power. The altar began to glow, the light reflecting off the walls in swirling patterns, and Dain's heart began to race.

"This is the first lesson," Velithar said, his voice calm yet filled with authority. "To wield the Ember, you must learn to control your soul. Without that control, the Ember will consume you."

A wave of intense heat surged through Dain, and he felt the Ember within him stir, its influence growing stronger. It was as though the world itself was pressing against him, urging him to give in to the hunger, to the flame.

He clenched his fists, the fire within him raging, but he forced himself to focus. The training had begun.

Velithar's voice cut through the chaos. "You will learn to master your own soul, Dain. You will face the Hollowing, again and again, until you can stand before the Ember as its master, not its servant."

Dain closed his eyes, shutting out the overwhelming sensations. He knew what was at stake. The Ember was a force of destruction, but it could also be a tool of unimaginable power—a power he would need if he was to survive the coming storm.

The hours stretched on as Velithar guided him through the process of channeling the Ember. Each time the power surged within him, he felt the Hollowing threaten to claim him, but each time, he resisted. Slowly, the heat began to feel less like a curse and more like a test of his will.

As night fell over the Sanctuary, Dain collapsed onto the cold stone floor, exhausted but determined. The Ember's fire still burned within him, but now it felt like something he could control.

Velithar stood over him, watching with quiet approval. "You have passed the first test. But this is only the beginning. The real challenges lie ahead, Dain. You must prepare yourself, for the Infernal Sovereigns are coming."

Dain looked up at him, his eyes still glowing faintly with the power of the Ember.

"I'm ready," he said, his voice steady. "I will face them."

Velithar's expression hardened. "Do not mistake your strength for invulnerability. The Ember will test you in ways you cannot yet understand. Prepare yourself, Dain, for you are not just fighting for power. You are fighting for your very soul."
