Chereads / The Ember Of Eternity / Chapter 5 - The Trial of Souls

Chapter 5 - The Trial of Souls

The days at the Seeker's Sanctuary blurred together in a haze of grueling training, relentless testing, and harsh lessons. Dain's mind and body were pushed to their limits as he honed his connection to the Ember, and with each passing day, the power within him grew. The burning fire that had once threatened to consume him now seemed more like an extension of his being—an element he could command.

Yet, the lessons Velithar imparted were not just about power; they were about control, restraint, and the very nature of the Ember itself. Velithar had warned him from the start—master the Ember, or the Ember would master him.

It was on the sixth day, as the first light of dawn broke over the horizon, that Velithar led him to the Trial of Souls—a sacred rite passed down through the Seekers, designed to push even the strongest souls to the brink. It was a trial that tested not only one's strength but one's inner convictions. It was rumored that only those who emerged from the trial with their soul intact could truly wield the Ember.

The Trial of Souls took place in a secluded cave deep beneath the Sanctuary, hidden from the world above. Velithar led the way, his steps echoing off the stone walls, and Dain followed closely behind, the faint light of his inner Ember casting long shadows.

"This place is ancient," Velithar said, his voice low. "It is the heart of the Seeker's Order—a place where the soul is exposed, where it is stripped of all lies and illusions. It will force you to confront your deepest fears, your darkest regrets, and your most painful memories. Are you prepared?"

Dain nodded without hesitation, his eyes burning with determination. "I have nothing to fear."

Velithar's gaze lingered on him for a moment, but he said nothing more as they entered the cavernous depths. The air grew thick and heavy with an eerie stillness, and the ground beneath them was uneven, as though the very earth itself was reluctant to allow them further.

At the center of the cave stood an enormous crystal—its core pulsing with an unnatural light, shimmering with an inner energy. It was here that the Trial of Souls would take place.

Velithar stepped to the side and gestured for Dain to approach. "Stand before the crystal. It will connect you to the heart of the Ember, to the very fabric of your soul."

Dain did as instructed, his body trembling slightly as he placed his hands upon the crystal. The moment his skin made contact, a surge of energy coursed through him—stronger than anything he had felt before. The Ember within him flared to life, its power resonating with the crystal's energy, and for a moment, Dain's vision blurred.

In an instant, he was no longer in the cave but standing at the edge of a vast, endless abyss—a dark void stretching out before him, filled with the whispers of forgotten souls. The Ember pulsed inside him, but the power felt distant, as though it were a separate entity entirely.

"This is your trial," a voice echoed, coming from nowhere and everywhere at once. "Face the truth of your soul, and survive."

Dain gritted his teeth, his fists clenching. The void before him seemed to open, and from the darkness, a figure began to emerge—a shadowy silhouette, its face obscured by a veil of mist.

At first, Dain thought it was an enemy, but as the figure came closer, he saw the face—a face he knew all too well. It was his mother, her expression filled with sorrow and pain. The wounds on her body were still fresh, as though they had just been inflicted.

"No…" Dain whispered, his voice shaking. He had buried these memories deep, too deep to confront. His mother's death had been the catalyst for his desire for power, for his need to never feel weak again.

"You abandoned me," the figure of his mother spoke, her voice a haunting echo. "You let me die. You didn't fight for me."

Dain's chest tightened, and his breath quickened. He knew it wasn't really her, not truly, but the guilt of that day, the regret of failing her, surged within him. The memory of her death was a scar that would never heal.

"You promised you would protect me," the voice continued, growing louder. "You failed me, just like you failed everyone."

Dain staggered back, his knees buckling under the weight of the words. The image of his mother faded into the darkness, but the pain, the guilt, remained, gnawing at him.

"You have no power," the voice taunted. "You are weak, just like the boy who couldn't save his mother."

The pain was unbearable, but Dain refused to crumble. He clenched his fists, calling upon the Ember within him. It pulsed to life, its fire engulfing him. He couldn't let the guilt consume him—not here, not now. He had to rise above it.

"Enough!" Dain shouted, his voice shaking with defiance. "I will not be broken. I will never be weak again."

With a surge of will, Dain forced the image of his mother to fade, his power expanding to push back against the shadows. The abyss seemed to resist, but Dain's resolve was unyielding. He would face his past and move beyond it.

The darkness around him shattered, and the vision of his mother disappeared. In its place, Dain found himself standing before the glowing crystal once again, the pulsing light of the Ember resonating with his very soul.

Velithar stood nearby, watching quietly. "You have passed the first part of the trial, but there are more tests ahead. Do not think that the Ember will be tamed so easily."

Dain nodded, breathing heavily as the weight of the experience settled on his shoulders. The Trial of Souls had forced him to confront his deepest fears and regrets, but he had survived. The Ember's fire still burned inside him, and though it had tested him, it had not consumed him.

"I'm ready," Dain said, his voice steady once more.

Velithar nodded approvingly. "Then we move forward. The real test begins now."
