Chapter 1: A Chance Encounter
The city of Solara was alive with its characteristic hum—the sounds of chatter, honking cars, and street performers. The air smelled of roasted chestnuts and freshly brewed coffee, mingling with the crispness of autumn. It was on a day like this, under the ochre canopy of falling leaves, that Reina's life was destined to take an unexpected turn.
Reina was a quiet dreamer, a twenty-four-year-old who worked at a small bookstore tucked away in a cobblestone alley. Books had always been her solace, her escape, and her guide to a world far more romantic than her own life. She had given up on the whirlwind romances she read about, settling instead for the companionship of fictional characters. That is until she met Aiden.
It started innocuously. Reina was late for work—again. The subway station was unusually crowded, and she'd almost dropped her bag as she fumbled to board the train. She collided headfirst into a stranger, apologizing profusely without even looking up.
"No harm done," a warm, baritone voice replied.
Reina finally looked up and was momentarily lost for words. The man standing before her was striking, with tousled dark hair and an air of effortless charm. But what caught her attention were his eyes, an intriguing shade of gray that seemed to shift with the light.
"Still with me?" he teased, an amused smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
Embarrassed, Reina nodded quickly. "Sorry, yes. Thank you," she mumbled, scurrying to an empty seat.
She thought that was the end of it, a fleeting encounter with a stranger she'd never see again. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. That evening, as Reina locked up the bookstore, she found herself face-to-face with him once more.
"You again," he said, his smile as disarming as before. "I'm starting to think you're following me."
Reina bristled. "Excuse me?"
"Relax," he said, holding up his hands in mock surrender. "I was joking. I'm Aiden, by the way."
She hesitated before replying, "Reina."
"Reina," he repeated, as if testing the name on his tongue. "Beautiful name. You work here?"
She nodded, still wary but curious. There was something about him, an aura that felt both unsettling and magnetic. They talked for a few minutes, mostly about books, and Reina found herself surprised by how effortlessly the conversation flowed. By the time he left, she couldn't stop thinking about him.
