Chapter 28: A Flicker of Hope
Reiji stared at the horizon of the new world, where rolling hills of golden grass stretched far into the distance, and a crystalline sky shimmered with hues of violet and blue. The air was calm, but it buzzed faintly with an energy that was different from the previous Eternal Realms. This place wasn't just a continuation—it was something entirely new.
Aeris floated beside him in her palm-sized form, her arms crossed, her tail flicking lazily. "So, what's the plan, oh great savior?" she teased, but there was a faint smile on her face.
Lyra, perched on a nearby rock in her own reduced form, narrowed her eyes. "Maybe we should first figure out where we even are. This isn't the Eternal Realms we knew."
Reiji nodded, his gaze fixed on the landscape. "This is the world we created. Or, at least, what came from the fragments we saved. But if it's anything like the old world, there will be people—NPCs and players alike—who will need guidance."
Aeris scoffed. "Guidance? What they need is someone to set things right before everything goes to chaos again. I bet half the players will start fighting over the first city they see."
"Or the first treasure," Lyra added with a smirk.
Reiji smiled faintly, but he couldn't shake the weight of the responsibility that lingered. This world was different, yes, but it would still carry the echoes of what had come before. If he wasn't careful, it could spiral into the same corruption and imbalance that had threatened the old Eternal Realms.
"We'll need to explore," he said finally. "Understand what's changed and what's stayed the same. And if there's anyone out there—NPC or player—who remembers even fragments of what happened, we'll need to find them."
Aeris tilted her head, her golden eyes gleaming with curiosity. "And if we don't find anyone? What then?"
"Then we build," Reiji said firmly. "We don't wait for the world to shape itself. We take the first step."
Lyra hopped down from the rock, her fiery aura flickering faintly as she walked closer. "You've grown bold, Reiji. I'll admit, I didn't expect you to take charge so quickly."
Reiji chuckled softly. "Let's just say the last few months have been a crash course in leadership."
The two NPCs exchanged a glance, their usual bickering absent. Despite their differences, both Aeris and Lyra seemed to understand the gravity of the situation.

The First Encounter
The trio began their journey across the unfamiliar terrain, the golden grass crunching softly beneath their feet. The air was warm, carrying the faint scent of something sweet, like blooming flowers. Yet, as serene as the world appeared, Reiji couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.
They came across the ruins of what seemed to be a village. Broken stone walls and charred wooden beams jutted out from the earth, a stark contrast to the vibrant landscape around them.
"This doesn't feel right," Lyra muttered, her hand glowing faintly with fiery energy as she scanned the area.
Aeris sniffed the air and frowned. "It's too quiet. Not even a single bird."
Reiji crouched beside the remnants of a shattered cart, his fingers brushing against the blackened wood. "It's like something swept through here and left nothing behind."
As if on cue, the silence was broken by a low growl. From the shadows of the ruins, a creature emerged. It was humanoid in shape but twisted, its limbs elongated and its skin a sickly gray. Its eyes glowed with a faint purple light, and its mouth was filled with jagged teeth.
"What in the world is that?" Aeris said, summoning a golden spear to her hand.
Lyra stepped forward, flames licking at her fingertips. "Whatever it is, it's not friendly."
Reiji's heart pounded as the creature let out a guttural snarl and lunged toward them. His mind raced. He had no weapons, no spells—just his wits and his Fateweaver talent.
"Don't kill it!" he shouted suddenly, causing both Aeris and Lyra to hesitate.
"What? Are you insane?" Aeris snapped, dodging the creature's swipe.
"I need to know what it is! If it's connected to this world's changes, we might learn something!"
Aeris groaned but held back her spear. Lyra muttered something under her breath but followed suit, her flames dimming slightly as she focused on evasion.
Reiji closed his eyes, reaching out with his Fateweaver talent. He felt the faint pull of the creature's essence, a thread that connected it to the world. It was corrupted, twisted by some external force, but beneath that, there was something familiar—a fragment of the old Eternal Realms.
"This thing was once human," Reiji said softly, his voice tinged with sadness. "Or at least, it was once alive."
Aeris faltered for a moment, her spear lowering slightly. "You're saying this thing used to be... someone?"
Reiji nodded. "Something's corrupted it. Twisted it into this form. If this is happening across the world, then we're dealing with something far bigger than just rebuilding."
Lyra stepped forward, her flames shifting from destructive to soothing. "Then we'll fix it. Whatever did this, we'll find it and stop it."
Reiji took a deep breath and nodded. This was just the beginning, but one thing was clear: their journey to rebuild the world would be far more dangerous—and far more important—than he had ever imagined.
