Chapter 30: Shadows of the Past
The air grew colder as Reiji, Aeris, and Lyra ventured deeper into the shifting terrain of the Forgotten Wastes. The vibrant golds and blues of the grasslands gave way to barren ground cracked with deep, jagged fissures. Wisps of dark energy seeped from the cracks, distorting the surroundings like a heat haze. The land felt lifeless, as if the corruption they had encountered earlier had spread its tendrils further than they could imagine.
Reiji tightened his grip on his cloak, his unease growing with each step. "This place… it's wrong," he murmured, his voice echoing in the eerie stillness.
"You're not wrong," Aeris said, her golden spear glowing faintly as she surveyed the area. "This doesn't feel like natural decay. It's like something is sucking the life out of the land."
Lyra paused, her fiery wings illuminating the darkening terrain. "There's a pattern here," she said, pointing at the fissures. "Look closer."
Reiji crouched near one of the cracks, studying the dark energy leaking from it. The patterns weren't random; they formed runes, crude but unmistakable. "This is… intentional. Someone—or something—created these."
"Wonderful," Aeris muttered. "As if fighting monsters wasn't enough, now we're dealing with whoever's behind this."
Reiji nodded, his mind racing. "It confirms what the corrupted man said. This isn't just an accident caused by the changes to the world. Someone is actively spreading this corruption."
As they pressed on, the fissures grew wider and more numerous, the dark energy more oppressive. The faint outline of a structure began to emerge in the distance—a jagged fortress built from blackened stone, its towers piercing the sickly gray sky like the talons of some great beast.
"Looks like we found the source," Lyra said grimly, flames rippling across her arms.
Reiji frowned, his unease deepening. "It's too quiet. No guards, no monsters. It feels like a trap."
"Then let's spring it," Aeris said, stepping forward with her usual confidence.
The trio approached the fortress, their footsteps echoing against the unnatural silence. The massive doors creaked open as if sensing their presence, revealing a long corridor bathed in dim, flickering light. The walls were inscribed with more of the crude runes, their dark energy pulsating faintly.
"Stay close," Reiji warned, his senses on high alert.
As they moved deeper into the fortress, the temperature dropped further, their breaths visible in the frigid air. The hallway opened into a vast chamber, its centerpiece a massive black crystal suspended in mid-air. Tendrils of dark energy coiled around it like living shadows, pulsing with an ominous rhythm.
Reiji's eyes widened. "That's the heart of the corruption."
Before anyone could respond, a voice echoed through the chamber, cold and laced with malice. "Fateweaver… you've come far."
A figure emerged from the shadows—a tall, gaunt man cloaked in black, his eyes glowing with the same dark energy as the crystal. His presence exuded power, and the corruption seemed to intensify with every step he took.
"And you've brought your pets," the man sneered, his gaze flicking to Aeris and Lyra.
Aeris bristled, her spear gleaming brighter. "Careful with your words, or I'll introduce you to the sharp end of this."
The man chuckled, his tone mocking. "Such bravado. But you're out of your depth."
Reiji stepped forward, his voice steady despite the tension. "Who are you? Why are you spreading this corruption?"
The man tilted his head, a cruel smile playing on his lips. "I am but a servant of the inevitable. The old world is gone, and this… 'new world' is an abomination. It must be purged, and from its ashes, the true order will rise."
Reiji clenched his fists. "You're destroying innocent lives!"
"Innocent?" The man's voice turned cold. "The lives you cling to are illusions, remnants of a shattered reality. They deserve no mercy."
Lyra's flames flared as she stepped forward, her eyes blazing with anger. "We'll stop you here. Whatever twisted plan you have ends now."
The man smirked, raising a hand. The crystal pulsed, and shadows erupted from it, coalescing into twisted humanoid figures. Their glowing eyes and jagged limbs marked them as creatures of pure corruption.
"Then show me your strength, Fateweaver," the man said, his voice dripping with contempt. "Let's see if you're worthy of the role you've been given."
The battle erupted in an instant. Aeris launched herself at the nearest creature, her spear carving through it with a burst of golden light. Lyra's flames engulfed another, her fiery wings slicing through the air with deadly precision.
Reiji stayed back, his mind racing as he analyzed the situation. The corrupted creatures were relentless, their attacks coordinated as if guided by the man's will. He knew brute force wouldn't be enough.
Reaching out with his Fateweaver talent, Reiji felt the threads of energy connecting the crystal, the creatures, and the man. The corruption's power flowed through these threads, binding them together.
"If I can sever those threads…" Reiji murmured, his focus sharpening.
Dodging a creature's swipe, Reiji reached out to the nearest thread with his talent. It resisted his touch, the dark energy lashing back at him. Gritting his teeth, he pushed harder, forcing his will into the thread.
The thread snapped with a surge of energy, and one of the creatures dissolved into shadows.
"It's working!" Reiji shouted. "Keep them busy—I'll take out the crystal's connection!"
Aeris and Lyra redoubled their efforts, holding the creatures at bay as Reiji moved closer to the crystal. Each thread he severed weakened the corruption, the creatures growing slower and less coordinated.
The man's smirk faltered, replaced by a glare of pure hatred. "You dare meddle with forces you cannot comprehend?"
"I don't need to comprehend them," Reiji shot back, severing another thread. "I just need to stop you."
With one final push, Reiji reached the crystal and placed his hand on its surface. Pouring his will into it, he unleashed a surge of Faith Points, flooding the dark energy with light. The crystal cracked, the corruption unraveling in a blinding burst of energy.
The creatures dissolved, and the man let out a furious roar as the light engulfed him. "This isn't over, Fateweaver!" he spat before vanishing into the shadows.
As the light faded, the chamber grew silent. The crystal was gone, and the oppressive darkness had lifted.
Reiji sank to his knees, exhaustion washing over him. Aeris and Lyra approached, their expressions a mix of relief and concern.
"You did it," Lyra said, her voice soft.
"For now," Reiji replied, his gaze lingering on the spot where the man had stood. "But this is far from over."
