Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Ascent of the Seraphic Mountains

Morning broke over the rugged cliffs, the sunlight spilling golden hues across the jagged peaks of the Seraphic Mountains. The chill of the night still lingered in the air as Kaelion stirred from his light sleep. Beside him, Lyria was already awake, sharpening her daggers with meticulous care.

Kaelion sat up, his muscles stiff from the rocky ground. "You're an early riser," he remarked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

Lyria didn't look up. "When you've lived the life I have, you learn not to waste daylight."

Kaelion smirked, grabbing his dagger and twirling it in his hand. "Fair enough. What's the plan today? Keep climbing until something else tries to kill us?"

Lyria glanced at him, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Something like that. But we'll need to be more cautious. The higher we go, the stronger the spirit beasts get. And the hunters… they'll still be on our trail."

Kaelion's grin faded. "Right. Can't forget about them."

He felt a familiar warmth in his chest as the Starfire Core pulsed gently, a reminder of the immense power that lay dormant within him. If the dangers ahead were as formidable as Lyria suggested, he'd need to push himself even harder to unlock the Core's full potential.

A Treacherous Climb

The ascent was grueling. The path grew steeper and more treacherous, with loose rocks and narrow ledges that threatened to give way underfoot. The air grew thinner, and the once-abundant vegetation gave way to sparse, hardy shrubs that clung to the rocky soil.

Kaelion and Lyria moved in silence, their focus on navigating the perilous terrain. Kaelion couldn't help but notice how effortlessly Lyria seemed to move, her every step precise and deliberate.

"You've done this before," he said, breaking the silence.

Lyria glanced back at him. "I've been through the mountains a few times. Never this high, though."

"And the shard?" Kaelion asked. "Why take something so dangerous if you knew it would put a target on your back?"

Lyria hesitated, her expression darkening. "I didn't know what it was at first. It was buried in a ruin, hidden behind layers of traps and wards. I thought it might be worth something—a way to get out of this life. But when I touched it…"

She trailed off, her hand unconsciously moving to the satchel where the shard was hidden.

Kaelion waited, sensing that she wasn't finished.

"When I touched it, I felt… something. A presence. It was like the shard was alive, like it was waiting for someone to find it. And now…" She shook her head. "I can't explain it. But I know it's important. I just don't know why."

Kaelion frowned. "Sounds like more trouble than it's worth."

"Maybe," Lyria admitted. "But I can't just abandon it. Not now."

An Unexpected Encounter

As they rounded a bend in the trail, the system's voice chimed in Kaelion's mind.

> "Hostile presence detected. Classification: Spirit Beast. Tier 4. Distance: 200 meters."

Kaelion froze, holding up a hand to stop Lyria. "We've got company."

Lyria's eyes narrowed. "What is it?"

Before Kaelion could answer, a low growl echoed through the air. From the shadows of the cliffs emerged a massive Shadowfang Panther, its sleek black fur rippling like liquid shadow. Its golden eyes locked onto them, unblinking and predatory.

"That's a Tier 4 beast," Lyria said, her voice tense. "We're not ready for this."

Kaelion gripped his dagger tightly, the Starfire Core flaring to life within him. "We don't have a choice."

The panther crouched low, its muscles coiling like springs. Then, in a blur of motion, it pounced.

A Battle in the Shadows

Kaelion barely had time to react. He rolled to the side, the panther's claws raking the ground where he'd been standing. Lyria darted in from the opposite side, her daggers flashing as she slashed at the beast's flank.

The panther snarled, spinning with uncanny speed to swipe at her. Lyria leapt back, narrowly avoiding the attack.

> "Activating Starfire Enhancement: Boosting agility and strength by 20%."

Kaelion felt the surge of power course through him. He darted forward, aiming for the panther's exposed side. His dagger struck true, but the beast's shadowy form seemed to absorb the blow, leaving only a faint mark.

"Great," he muttered. "It's got shadow armor."

Lyria gritted her teeth. "We need to disrupt its energy. Aim for the joints!"

Kaelion nodded, circling the panther as it focused on Lyria. He noticed the faint glow of its energy core beneath the shadows—a weak point.

"Lyria! Keep it distracted!"

She didn't respond, already moving to draw the panther's attention. Her movements were a blur, her daggers slashing at its face and legs. The panther roared in frustration, its attacks growing more frenzied.

Kaelion seized the opening, channeling the Starfire energy into his dagger. The blade glowed with a brilliant golden light as he lunged forward, driving it into the panther's core.

The beast let out a piercing howl as the shadows around it dissolved, leaving behind its true form—a sleek, silver-furred panther. It collapsed, its body still.

A Warning from the Shadows

Kaelion and Lyria stood over the fallen beast, their breaths ragged. Lyria retrieved the panther's Spirit Core, her hands trembling slightly.

"That was too close," she said, her voice shaky.

Kaelion nodded, wiping sweat from his brow. "Yeah. And something tells me it's only going to get harder from here."

As they turned to continue their journey, Kaelion's system chimed again.

> "Warning: Hostile presence detected. Classification: Human Cultivators. Distance: 500 meters."

Kaelion's eyes narrowed. "We're not alone."

Lyria's expression darkened. "The hunters."

Kaelion drew his dagger, the Starfire Core flaring with renewed energy. "Then let's make sure they regret following us."
