Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Duel with the Eternal Guardian

The chamber trembled as the Eternal Guardian loomed over Kaelion and Lyria. Its massive, stone form radiated an ancient, oppressive energy that made the air heavy and thick. Every step it took sent a deep rumble through the ground, its glowing eyes locked onto Kaelion with an unyielding intensity.

The spear in its hand pulsed with raw power, arcs of energy crackling along its surface. Kaelion's Starfire Core responded instinctively, flaring with golden light as if to prepare him for the battle to come.

"Kaelion," Lyria whispered, her voice taut. "This thing isn't like anything we've faced before. We can't just charge in blindly."

Kaelion nodded, gripping the hilt of his Starfire Blade tightly. "I know. Let's see what this thing can do first."

---

The Guardian's First Strike

Without warning, the Eternal Guardian lunged forward with surprising speed for its size. Its massive spear came crashing down, aiming directly at Kaelion. He barely managed to sidestep, the ground where he had been standing shattering into shards of stone and molten debris.

"Watch out!" Lyria shouted, throwing a dagger at the Guardian's exposed flank. The blade struck its stone surface but bounced off harmlessly, leaving not even a scratch.

The Guardian turned its gaze toward Lyria, its glowing eyes narrowing. It raised its free hand, and a wave of energy surged toward her, crackling like a storm.

"Lyria!" Kaelion yelled, sprinting toward her.

Before the energy could reach her, he planted himself between her and the blast, raising the Starfire Blade. A shield of golden flames erupted around them, absorbing the attack in a burst of light.

"Thanks," Lyria said, her voice tight as she regained her footing.

"Don't mention it," Kaelion replied, his eyes never leaving the Guardian.

A Strategic Approach

Kaelion's system chimed in:

> "Analysis: The Eternal Guardian's armor is reinforced by ancient runes. Direct attacks are ineffective. Weak points detected: the joints and the glowing sigils on its chest and back."

"Joints and sigils," Kaelion muttered under his breath. "Got it."

He glanced at Lyria. "I need you to keep it distracted. Go for its joints—aim for anything that looks like a crack or weak spot."

"And what will you be doing?" she asked, already moving to circle the Guardian.

Kaelion smirked. "Going for the heart."

Lyria rolled her eyes but didn't argue. She darted toward the Guardian's legs, her movements quick and precise. As she threw her daggers, aiming for the creature's knees, Kaelion charged forward, his Starfire Blade blazing with golden fire.

A Test of Power

The Guardian roared, its voice a deep, guttural sound that echoed through the chamber. It swung its spear in a wide arc, forcing Kaelion to dive to the side. The weapon's energy left a glowing trail in its wake, the sheer force of it shaking the ground.

Kaelion sprang to his feet and closed the distance, his blade aimed at the glowing sigil on the Guardian's chest. With a burst of speed, he slashed at the sigil, the golden flames of his blade clashing against the Guardian's protective runes. Sparks flew, and the Guardian staggered slightly, but the sigil remained intact.

"Damn it," Kaelion muttered.

> "Observation: The sigils are reinforced by the Guardian's core energy. Disabling its joints will weaken its defenses."

"Lyria!" Kaelion called out. "Focus on the joints! It's the only way to bring it down!"

"I'm trying!" she shouted back, narrowly avoiding a swipe from the Guardian's massive hand. Her daggers struck the creature's knee, chipping away at the stone and exposing faint cracks.

Flame Tempest: Precision Strike

Kaelion's Starfire Core flared again, its energy replenished slightly as the system chimed in:

> "Energy reserves at 50%. Flame Tempest available for targeted use."

"Perfect," Kaelion said, a grin spreading across his face.

He leaped into the air, the Starfire Blade glowing brighter than ever. Focusing his energy, he channeled the Flame Tempest into a single, concentrated strike.

"Flame Tempest: Focused Burst!"

A column of golden fire erupted from his blade, slamming into the Guardian's shoulder joint. The heat and force of the attack shattered the stone, severing the Guardian's arm. The massive limb fell to the ground with a thunderous crash, cracks spreading across the chamber floor.

The Guardian let out an enraged roar, its movements growing more erratic as it tried to compensate for the loss of its arm.

The Final Blow

With the Guardian weakened, Kaelion and Lyria worked in tandem. She continued to strike at its legs, further destabilizing it, while Kaelion prepared for one final attack.

"System," he said, his voice steady despite the strain on his body. "How do I take this thing down for good?"

> "Recommendation: Channel all remaining energy into the Starfire Blade. Strike the central sigil to overload its core."

Kaelion nodded, gripping the blade with both hands. The Starfire Core pulsed rapidly, its warmth almost overwhelming as he poured everything he had into the weapon.

The blade transformed once more, elongating and crackling with energy. Golden flames spiraled around it, forming the shape of a massive phoenix.

"This ends now," Kaelion said, his voice a low growl.

He charged forward, dodging the Guardian's desperate attacks with practiced precision. As he reached the sigil on its chest, he let out a roar of his own, driving the blade into the glowing symbol.

The explosion that followed was deafening. The chamber was bathed in golden light as the Guardian's core shattered, its energy dispersing in a wave that shook the entire ravine.

When the light faded, the Eternal Guardian was gone, its massive form reduced to rubble.

A New Reward

Kaelion collapsed to one knee, breathing heavily as the Starfire Blade reverted to its normal form.

"System," he said between breaths. "Status?"

> "Eternal Guardian neutralized. Starfire Core progress: 85%. New skill unlocked: Phoenix Rebirth. Energy signature detected—artifact retrieval available."

Kaelion's eyes lit up as he noticed a faint glow amid the rubble. He approached cautiously, finding a small, intricately carved stone orb pulsing with light.

"What is it?" Lyria asked, stepping up beside him.

"Something worth the trouble," Kaelion replied, picking up the orb.

The system chimed one final time:

> "Artifact obtained: Orb of Eternity. Enhances core abilities and grants access to time-based skills."

Kaelion smiled, feeling the orb's energy merge with his core. "Let's keep moving. I have a feeling this is just the beginning."
