Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: A World in Ruins

The panic installed inside the room. Both Alice and Ethan were looking at each other with an expression of panic and surprise, processing all the things they had seen so far. Their bodies still glowing with a blue light representing the residual energy of the awakening process. The excitement they felt went away just as fast as it came, giving his place to fear.

— "What...What is going on?!" — Ethan screamed, while grabbing his hair with both hands.

Alice sat on the couch, breathing heavily, her small chest going up and down in an irregular form. Tears rolling down her cheeks from her eyes.

— "This can't be real...! This is a dream, right?! Mom?!" — She spoke with a trembling voice.

Helena, their mother, was standing next to the window, paralised, looking at her hands as if they were someone else's hands. A golden light started to shine around her while carrying an aura filled with calm and serenity — a subtle effect of her talent, Matriarch's heart.

This talent's side effect, made all of them calm down almost instantly, which frightened Allan when he started to think about all the possible variables of talents that may exist all over this world.

Allan closed his eyes for a second, in order to focus and sort out his thoughts, this was something he always did when encountering a difficult situation. It became an involuntary habit.

Ethan was the first to react to the side effect of his mother talent. He looked at his family.

— "How can this be? I was panicking just now, and this feeling of fear just vanished out of the blue! Who did this? Is it a talent?"

Alice was surprised and said, — "I thought it was just me who felt that!"

Allan looked at his mother in awe of her talent. Being able to induce the feeling of calmness and serenity upon her allies is an amazing thing, the best part is that this is just a side effect of her talent, the main thing is the set of buffs that it provides.

— "You have an amazing talent mother, it will be very helpful." — He said that while looking at his mother Helena, with a light smile.

Helena gave a wry smile, — "Although I'm frightened by this power, I'll use it to protect you all!" — She finished the sentence with a determined look on her face.

— "So did all of us felt that strange wave?!" — Alice asked with a hopeful look.

— "Yeah, we all did, and I guess it was not just us who felt this strange wave, but everyone around the planet, we are definitely not alone on this one. Let's watch the news."

The TV was on and there was still a sign of an emergency transmission. The reporter was still the same man with wide open eyes, disheveled hair and sweat running down his face.

— "We continue with the live broadcasting of this world shaking events!" — He took a deep breath, trying to keep his composure. — "With the awakening of this energy wave, the all planet went through an unprecedented transformation."

Various Images starting passing through the screen, one even more shocking than the previous one.

— "The world has expanded" — He said with a trembling voice. — "Experts and satellites confirmed that the Earth's surface as increase by at least a hundred times. Neighbouring cities and countries are now separated by massive extension of unknown land. We have images of new ruins rising out of nowhere, huge forests that flourished in places were buildings and streets used to exist."

Allan looked at the news with an astonished face while thinking, "a hundred times! How is that even possible?!"

Then new images come up on the news, showing images of the ocean, captured by a drone, and everything looks bigger and deeper than before, the rivers, seas, oceans. A new world map based on the simulation of the expanded earth was shown on TV and it looked massive. With new lands everywhere.

The reporter continued — "The ocean have grown exponentially bigger, colossal creatures were sighted inside deep ocean waters, there are even news of marine monsters that only existed in legends.

The image changes, now it's a live broadcast of an helicopter from the news, flying over the ocean, filming both the ocean and the sky, massive shadows of living beings spread across the surface of the seas and what looked like huge birds flying over the sky...then a massive sea serpent, with dark purple scales like a dragon, and two little horns on the head that looked more like a prehistoric beast rises up from the waves, looking like a huge living tower.

It's deep yellow eyes with a green slit carrying a hint of a vile intelligence while looking at the helicopter, all of a sudden it moved and with only one movement it destroyed the helicopter and the screen went blank... The transmission was cut and went back to the reporter, that stood there with a solemn semblance.

Allan and his family watching the news went silent, just like the reporter on the other side of the screen.

— "Did you see that? Those eyes, that mouth and those enormous teeth?" — The reporter was even more frightened at the sight of such an existence, even if it was from the screen.

— "The seas are no longer safe. The skies are also the same, the are images captured by satellites of huge birds and creatures that look like dragons from myths and legends. There has also been reports from all over the world of islands that rose up from the grounds and now they stand floating in the air."

It was a lot of information covered in a short amount of time.

The reporter continued. — "Vegetation has also grown wildly, plants that usually take years to mature have grown beyond what they usually do in a matter of minutes. Some of them have acquired predatory features, hunting animals and even humans.

Images of a newly formed forest were shown, a group of soldiers armed to this teeth appear to be exploring the area, although the forest was just formed, it looked like it already stood there for centuries...until one of them was suddenly wrapped by living vines and pulled up, after that only screams were heard and then the sound fades. He was devoured by a carnivore plant life the size of a car.

Allan felt chills all over the body.

— "Governments from all over the world have already started taking drastic measures. Armies are being mobilized, national security centers have been activated and quarantine zones are being created to deal with some unexpected events occurring right now."

The camera cuts and now a new live broadcast showing a group of soldiers going up against a huge bear the size of a truck. The bullets fired from their weapons barely leave any scratch on the creature's body right before it wipes out half of the soldiers with one blow, delivered with a mere swing of one of his paws.

The world... became a battlefield.

But then a new problem arises. The reporter was now speaking about something else.

— "On top of everything that is happening... right now, we are now experi...en...cing what seems to be period...ically power outages. Thec... now is suffering a major set...back in it's progress. Global communications have been severely affected and many nation are completely without...

The image starts failing and suddenly the power goes off... Allan looked outside the window and realized that the city's electricity was gone. There was an eerie silence in the air, it's like the world regressed quite a few centuries, but everything is completely different from what it was before.

— "It looks like we are going to spend quite a while without electricity." Allan said in a much calmer tone than his usual. — "Mom, Alice and Ethan, we need to prepare for what's coming."

This is the start of a new era.
