Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Like Cutting Bones to Heal Wounds:

As soon as she heard about calling the police to check the surveillance footage, Zhou Ruotang's arrogance immediately diminished. She looked at Zhou Muchen with a guilty conscience and said, "Brother..."

Seeing his sister in trouble, Zhou Muchen, as her brother, naturally wouldn't stand by and do nothing. He stepped forward and looked at Xu Yansang. "I'll compensate for the damage. There's no need to call the police. It won't do you any good if things get too ugly."

Although his words sounded like a negotiation, his tone left no room for argument.

Xu Yansang understood the implicit warning in his words and silently nodded.

The Zhou family held a high status in Beicheng; she couldn't afford to act impulsively.

Soon, Zhou Ruotang compensated for the damages, and the staff cleaned up the scene.

Xu Yansang and Fu Zhenteng left together without lingering any longer.

After such an incident, they had lost the mood to continue shopping, so they pushed their cart to the checkout.

The checkout line was long, and by the time it was their turn, Zhou Muchen and his group had also arrived and lined up behind them.

Hearing the prices being scanned at the register, Zhou Ruotang sneered sarcastically, "Some people are really miserable after leaving my brother. They can't even afford a decent bedsheet. Is a hundred-yuan bedsheet even suitable for sleeping?"

Xu Yansang wasn't a pushover, but facing the Zhou family, she didn't have the privilege to lose her temper. So, she simply lowered her head and pretended not to hear.

Fu Zhenteng glanced at Xu Yansang's silence, his dark eyes deepening. Suddenly, he said meaningfully, "Some people don't realize that their brother and his ex-wife are divorced. I don't understand why an ex-sister-in-law acts so high and mighty, jumping around like a mother hen."

Zhou Ruotang was instantly furious. "Who are you calling a mother hen? Say that again!"

Fu Zhenteng raised an eyebrow and looked at her with surprise. "I didn't mention any names. Why are you taking it personally? Could it be that you really are like that?"

"You!"

Zhou Ruotang, hands on her hips, was about to lash out, but Zhou Muchen shot her a cold glare. "Shut up! Haven't you embarrassed yourself enough?"

Zhou Ruotang stomped her foot in frustration. "Brother, Xu Yansang brought that pretty boy to humiliate you. I can't let this go!"

Zhou Muchen pursed his lips tightly and stared coldly at the figures not far away.

How could he let it go either?

However, thinking about the assistant's scheduled meeting with Tianhua Insurance's boss the day after tomorrow, a smirk appeared on his lips.

It was fine—soon enough, Xu Yansang would be begging him for mercy.

After leaving the supermarket, Xu Yansang remained silent. Fu Zhenteng looked down at her. "Are you feeling sad?"

Xu Yansang smiled bitterly and didn't hide her feelings. "Yes."

Letting go of someone she deeply loved and abandoning a once-heartfelt relationship felt like cutting bones to heal a wound—how could it not hurt?

After a pause, she looked at Fu Zhenteng gratefully. "Thank you for standing up for me earlier, but..."

She worried that Zhou Muchen might retaliate against him.

Fu Zhenteng seemed to read her concerns and replied nonchalantly, "Don't worry. I'm related to my boss, and I'm the top salesperson in our department. Your ex-husband can't touch me that easily."

His calm and confident voice oddly reassured Xu Yansang.

Back home, Fu Zhenteng considerately let her take a shower first. After finishing, Xu Yansang hesitated for a moment before locking the bedroom door.

---

The next morning, Xu Yansang had to report to work. As she was about to leave, she saw Fu Zhenteng coming out of his room in pajamas and asked curiously, "Doesn't your insurance company require you to work in the office?"

Fu Zhenteng paused for a moment, then naturally replied, "Yeah."

Xu Yansang didn't think much of it and envied him. "You're so lucky. I'm off now."

---

New employees had to attend training sessions. The content was easy for Xu Yansang, and the morning passed quickly. Just as she was about to get lunch, her phone rang.

She answered, "Hello?"

Zhou Muchen's mother's furious voice came through.

"Xu Yansang! My son is already divorced from you, and yet your poor mother dares to come to my house? Are you trying to ruin my son's life?"

Xu Yansang was stunned. "What? My mom went to your house?"

Zhao Jiali scolded her furiously. "Don't pretend you don't know! If you didn't send her, why would she show up here? You and your mother are nothing but parasites! You've divorced my son, yet you're still trying to leech off him!"

Xu Yansang sighed. "I'll go there right away."

Her next training session was at 2:30 p.m., and it was only 11:30 a.m. now—she had enough time.

She hurried downstairs and took a taxi. Given the urgency, she didn't care about the fare.

"Driver, please take me to Yuanshan Villas. Hurry, please."

"No problem!"

The driver stepped on the gas, and the car sped off.

Xu Yansang felt restless. Why did her mother suddenly go to the Zhou family villa?

Was it because their money had run out again? But she had just transferred 10,000 yuan last month...

Or did her younger brother Xia Jun'an cause trouble again? Did her father know about this?

Her mind was a mess, and she kept hoping the taxi would go faster, silently praying that Xia Yanfang wouldn't make things too difficult.

Luckily, it was a weekday, and there was no traffic. Thirty minutes later, the taxi stopped outside Yuanshan Villas.

After paying, Xu Yansang got out of the car.

She had lived here for two years, and the security guards recognized her. They smiled and greeted her while opening the gate, "Mrs. Zhou, your mother is here today."

Xu Yansang whispered, "Thank you," and quickly walked in.

From a distance, she saw her mother, Xia Yanfang, clinging to the iron gate of the Zhou family's villa, screaming hysterically.

"When you married my daughter, you begged us! Now that she can't have children, you're throwing her out? There's no such thing as that!"

"Divorce? Fine! But not a penny? Impossible! You think you can just use my daughter for two years for free? Either pay up or remarry her! This isn't over!"

Xu Yansang stopped in her tracks. She always knew Xia Yanfang was trouble, but she had never spoken so crudely before.

Was it because Xu Yansang was now divorced and had no support that she finally showed her true colors?

The two security guards nearby looked helpless, unable to do much after trying to persuade her for a long time.

Seeing Xu Yansang, they sighed in relief, but hesitated to address her as "Mrs. Zhou," given the situation.

Xu Yansang quickly apologized, "Sorry for the trouble. I'll take her away soon."

The guards, unwilling to get involved, nodded and left after a few words.

Seeing Xu Yansang, Xia Yanfang became more aggressive. "Yansang, you're here! Open the gate! These bastards locked me out! I need to go in and settle this!"

Xu Yansang tried to reason with her gently. "Aunt Fang, the divorce was my decision. We have nothing to do with the Zhou family anymore. Let's go home, okay?"
