Chapter 37 - Chapter 34: The Obsidian Shadows

The night air was heavy with silence, save the rustling of leaves beneath their feet. Joe led his team through dangerous landscape toward where Obsidian Shadows were last seen. A name putting fear and excitement in the bravest of hearts, legends said they were assassins so good that they could disappear in thin air, leaving nothing as evidence.

With him came a small yet formidable team on this quest: Raymond, Sarah, Jayden-each had his or her particular skill set needed for what awaited them. Raymond's alchemical know-how would definitely be put to good use where traps were concerned, Sarah's healing skills as a precaution against the never-known accidents, and Jayden's tactical thought processes made certain they would have a plan wherever they went.

Keep your eyes open," Joe said in his low voice, his daggers glinting faintly under the moonlight. "The Obsidian Shadows are masters of illusion. What you see might not always be real."

Sarah shivered, though the night was warm. "It's unsettling. We're walking into the lair of people who could kill us before we even knew they were there.

Jayden gave her a reassuring smile. "That's why we have Joe. If anybody can match their stealth, it's him."

Joe didn't say anything. He just kept his eyes on the path ahead. The studies of many legends about the Obsidian Shadows-what few had dared approach-came with every step they made.

The Silent Ambush

The woods seemed to darken the deeper they went into the domain of the Obsidian Shadows. Joe's keen eyes picked out subtle signs-broken twigs, faint footprints, and especially those unmistakable marks of a trap carefully disguised as nature.

"Stop," he said quietly, his hand rising. The group froze.

"What?" Raymond whispered.

Joe pointed to a seemingly ordinary patch of ground ahead. "Pressure trap. Step on it, and we'll be impaled by poison spikes."

Raymond crouched down, pulling out a vial of glowing liquid from his satchel. "Let me disable it." With careful precision, he poured the liquid onto the trap, causing it to dissolve silently into the earth.

They continued, but the further they went, the more apparent it became that they were being watched. Shadows flickered at the edge of their vision, and the sound of rustling leaves seemed to come from every direction.

"We're not alone," Sarah said, gripping her staff tightly.

"Stay calm," Jayden said, scanning their surroundings. "If they wanted to kill us, we'd already be dead."

On cue, a voice, cold and emotionless, rang out across the forest floor. "You tread on sacred ground. State your purpose or face annihilation."

Joe stepped forward, his stance calm but alert. "We seek the Obsidian Shadows. We come in peace, with a proposal that could change the fate of this world.

The silence that followed was deafening. Then, out of the blue, the shadows around them came alive. Figures emerged from the dark, all in black armor, seemingly made from light-absorbing materials. Their faces were obscured by masks, and their silent movements made it seem as if they were ghosts.

Before them stood the leader, his mask bearing many twists and curlicues that spoke of rank and station. "Speak quickly, or your lives will be forfeit."

The Test of Shadows

Joe stood his ground, his eyes locked with the mask of the leader. "The Dark Apostles have returned. They threaten not just our world but the balance of existence itself. We've found the Relic, the key to forging weapons capable of harming them. But we need master weapon refiners-people with skills as legendary as yours.

The leader cocked his head slightly. "You wish to use the power of the Relic? You know what that would entail?"

Joe nodded. "We do. That's why we're here. Your skills are unmatched, and without your help, humanity stands no chance.

He did not utter a single word but instead pointed his hand to them. "You want our assistance? Prove yourself worthy of such. Obsidian Shadows don't let any weaklings ally with us."

"What test is there?" Jayden calmly asked while inside, the storm in him churned wildly.

He flung an arm, indicating the woods, which seemed to be swallowing them up. "A test of shadows. You shall face us in our element. Survive until dawn, and we shall take your request into consideration."

Battle in the Dark

The Obsidian Shadows faded among the trees until they were consumed by thick silence.

"This is nuts," Sarah whispered. "How will we fight people who disappear?

Joe's face had turned grim. "We don't fight them. We outthink them."

Raymond nodded, pulling several vials out of his satchel. "I've got some tricks that might even the odds."

Jayden crouched down, drawing a quick map of the area in the dirt. "We need to stick together and cover each other's blind spots. They'll try to separate us. They won't succeed.

The first attack came without warning. A dagger whizzed through the air, narrowly missing Sarah's head. Joe reacted instantly, throwing one of his own daggers into the shadows. A grunt of pain confirmed he had hit his mark.

"They're testing us," Joe said. "Stay sharp."

Their footfalls quiet, they continued on through the silent house.

The group moved as a unit, their backs to each other as they made their way through the forest. The Obsidian Shadows were relentless, materializing and disappearing with an uncanny rapidity.

Raymond threw a vial of luminescent liquid into the air, outlining space around them in a small radius. For just a moment, the shadows recoiled, and the group caught their breath.

"They're not invincible," Joe said. "We can beat them."

More coordinated and heavier attacks kept on coming, well into the night. Still, this group stood resolute, all courtesy of teamwork and not yielding.

Dawn and the Verdict

With the breaking of the first light of dawn through the trees, the attacks finally subsided. Again, the woods fell silent, and out from behind them came the Obsidian Shadows.

The leader stepped forward, his face unreadable behind his mask. "You have passed the test. Few survive the night against us. Fewer still earn our respect."

Joe stepped forward, exhaustion showing but his resolve unshaken. "Will you help us?"

The leader nodded. "We will. But know this-our aid comes at a price. You will be bound by our code, and failure to honor it will mean your death.

Joe didn't bat an eyelid; he looked him right in the eye. "We accept."

A New Alliance

The Obsidian Shadows led them to their secret sanctuary-a wide underground fortress carved into the heart of the mountain, a place of shadows and secrets, with every nook holding untold mysteries.

They now began the training and preparations, but they never lost hope. They had gained an immensely powerful ally in the fight against the Dark Apostles, but they knew this was only the beginning.

A long dangerous road lay ahead, but they were ready to face it together.
