Chapter 30 - The Hunt

The emergence of The Veil posed a direct challenge to Magdahlia's control over Starsbough. The mysterious leader's operatives orchestrated chaos with surgical precision, targeting key figures within the Stars Knights and spreading unrest among the city's population.

Magdahlia, however, was no stranger to shadowy threats. With the full force of The Silent Vanguard at her disposal, she launched an aggressive campaign to uncover The Veil's identity.

Her orders were clear:

"No interrogations. No survivors. We send a message—Starsbough is not a haven for rebellion."

Through a combination of informants and magical surveillance, Magdahlia identified key operatives within The Veil's network. One by one, these individuals were eliminated in swift, brutal operations.

In one such mission, Magdahlia personally led a strike team to infiltrate a safehouse rumored to be The Veil's command center. Moving under the cover of darkness, her team neutralized the guards with silent efficiency.

Magdahlia approached the last operative, a trembling man cornered in a dimly lit room.

"Please, I didn't have a choice!" he pleaded, his voice shaking.

"You always have a choice," Magdahlia replied coldly, driving her blade into his chest without hesitation.

She wiped the blood from her sword and turned to her operatives.

"Burn it. Leave nothing behind," she ordered.

The safehouse was reduced to ashes, along with any traces of The Veil's activities.

As Magdahlia dismantled The Veil's network, she turned her attention to Chancellor Roderic Fane, whose persistent attempts to undermine her authority had become an unacceptable threat.

One night, as Roderic worked late in his study, the flickering candlelight revealed a figure standing in the shadows. Magdahlia stepped forward, her presence calm but menacing.

"Captain Sherwood," Roderic said, his voice betraying his fear. "What brings you here at this hour?"

Magdahlia's gaze was icy as she approached his desk.

"Your meddling has gone too far, Chancellor," she said.

Roderic rose, attempting to maintain his composure.

"I've only sought to ensure accountability within the Stars Knights," he said defensively.

"Accountability doesn't involve spreading lies and plotting rebellion," Magdahlia retorted, her voice low and sharp.

Before Roderic could respond, Magdahlia drew her blade and pressed it against his throat.

"You've been a thorn in my side for far too long, Roderic. And I don't tolerate thorns," she said.

Roderic's eyes widened in terror as he realized her intent.

"Wait—please! I can—"

His plea was cut short as Magdahlia's blade sliced through his throat in one swift motion. She watched dispassionately as he collapsed, blood pooling around him.

Magdahlia wiped her blade clean and surveyed the scene. With precise efficiency, she planted forged documents implicating Roderic as a conspirator in The Veil's rebellion. By morning, his death was declared an assassination by rebel forces, further justifying Magdahlia's crackdown.

With The Veil's network dismantled and Roderic Fane eliminated, Magdahlia's grip on Starsbough was stronger than ever. Fear and respect for her authority ensured that no one dared challenge her methods.

Magdahlia knew that despite her overwhelming influence, two significant obstacles remained between her and absolute control of Starsbough: Grand Master Lucas Caussade, the esteemed leader of the Stars Knights, and the Atopia family, whose political connections still held sway over the city's elite.

Grand Master Lucas was a formidable figure, known for his tactical brilliance and unshakable principles. His support for the Stars Knights had kept the organization intact, but Magdahlia was determined to bend his will. The old man had to be removed from the equation, whether through subtle manipulation or direct confrontation.

After Magdahlia's cold and calculated dismantling of Grand Master Lucas Caussade's authority, the seasoned knight found himself in a profound state of loss and despair. His world, once steady under his leadership, crumbled as his personal life followed suit.

It all began when Sophie Caussade, Lucas' beloved wife, was tragically killed by a group of bandits. Sophie had been a beacon of warmth and strength to Lucas, and her death left an irreparable void. Her passing shattered Lucas's heart, and his sorrow deepened as he was left to care for their daughter, Aurelie Caussade.

The bandits, seeking to strike at the heart of the Stars Knights, had attacked the Caussade family estate during a night when Lucas was away on a mission. Sophie, though brave, could not defend herself against the vicious raid.

Her death sent Lucas into a spiraling grief that clouded his judgment. His sorrow over Sophie's death and his failure to protect her left him emotionally vulnerable. Aurelie, though young, survived the attack, but the experience left her scarred. The bond between father and daughter, once unbreakable, became strained under the weight of tragedy.
