Chapter 45 - The Relic’s Call

Volume 2: Shards of Unity

Chapter 19: The Relic's Call

The jungle was shrouded in twilight when Eryth, Kaelen, Solas, Kael, and Nyx set out on their perilous journey. The relic was hidden deep within the Verdant Labyrinth, far beyond the reach of any map. Even Kaelen, with his bond to the jungle, admitted he had only heard whispers of its location.

"This path isn't just dangerous," Kaelen said as they navigated a narrow trail flanked by colossal trees and tangled vines. "The jungle itself may test us."

Eryth adjusted the shard at their side, its faint glow barely visible in the dim light. "We've faced worse," they said, their voice steady but cautious.

Kaelen glanced at them. "You haven't faced this. The relic's guardian isn't bound by the same rules as the Ascendant or the Sovereign's forces. It's… something older."

Nyx growled low, its ears swiveling toward a sound in the distance. The group fell silent, their eyes scanning the shadows.

The First Trial

The jungle grew denser as they progressed, the air thick with humidity and the faint hum of unseen insects. The path seemed to shift beneath their feet, the ground becoming uneven and unstable.

"Stop," Kaelen said suddenly, raising a hand.

A faint shimmer appeared in the air ahead of them, almost imperceptible. It stretched across the path like a spider's web, faintly pulsing with green light.

"What is that?" Kael asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

"A trap," Kaelen replied. "One of the jungle's defenses. If we trigger it, we'll be stuck in a temporal loop—or worse."

Eryth studied the shimmering barrier. "Can we go around?"

Kaelen shook his head. "The jungle won't let us. We have to go through it."

Solas stepped forward, their blade in hand. "Then let's break it."

"It's not that simple," Kaelen warned. "This is ancient magic. If we make a mistake…"

"Let me try," Eryth said, stepping closer.

The shard at their side began to pulse faintly, resonating with the barrier. Eryth reached out, their hand hovering just above the shimmering surface. They closed their eyes, focusing on the shard's energy.

The barrier resisted at first, its green light flaring brightly, but the shard's golden glow intensified, pushing back the opposing force. Slowly, the barrier began to dissolve, its light fading into the jungle.

Eryth exhaled, their shoulders relaxing. "Let's keep moving."

The Relic's Guardian

The path led them to a clearing unlike any they had seen before. The air was heavy with energy, the ground covered in glowing moss that pulsed like a heartbeat. At the center of the clearing stood a massive stone pedestal, its surface carved with intricate patterns that seemed to shift and change when viewed from different angles.

Above the pedestal floated the relic. It was a sphere of pure light, its radiance filling the clearing with a golden glow that rivaled the shard's.

But they were not alone.

A low rumble echoed through the clearing as the guardian emerged from the shadows. It was a massive, otherworldly creature, its body composed of intertwining roots and jagged stone. Its eyes glowed with an ancient, green light, and its movements were unnaturally smooth for something so large.

Kaelen froze. "That's the guardian. It won't let us take the relic without a fight."

Eryth stepped forward, the shard in their hand glowing brighter in response to the relic. "We don't have a choice."

The Fight for the Relic

The guardian let out a deafening roar, its massive form charging toward the group.

Kael reacted first, hurling a fireball at the creature. The flames struck its chest, but the guardian absorbed the attack, the fire dissipating harmlessly.

"It's resistant to magic!" Kael shouted, retreating as the creature swung a massive stone limb in his direction.

Solas darted in, their blade striking at the guardian's legs. Their attack barely scratched the surface before a root shot out, wrapping around their arm and flinging them across the clearing.

"Keep it distracted!" Eryth yelled, their eyes locked on the relic.

Nyx leapt onto the guardian's back, its claws digging into the creature's wooden exterior. The nightmare creature snarled as it tore at the roots, its movements relentless.

Kaelen raised his staff, calling on the jungle's power. Vines erupted from the ground, wrapping around the guardian's limbs and holding it in place. "Eryth, now!"

Eryth sprinted toward the pedestal, the shard glowing fiercely in their hand. The guardian roared, breaking free of the vines, but Nyx leapt in front of it, blocking its path.

The nightmare creature was thrown aside with a powerful swing, but its distraction bought Eryth the time they needed.

They reached the pedestal and reached out toward the relic. The shard resonated with the sphere, their combined light filling the clearing.

A Glimpse of the Future

As Eryth's hand closed around the relic, their vision blurred. A flood of images filled their mind—fractured glimpses of what was to come.

They saw the Sovereign's forces overwhelming the Verdant Labyrinth, the Ascendant wielding an even greater power. They saw Nyx standing against a shadowy figure, its golden eyes fierce with determination.

And they saw themselves standing in a desolate wasteland, the shard and relic glowing in their hands as they faced an overwhelming darkness.

The vision ended as suddenly as it began, leaving Eryth breathless.

The guardian let out one final roar before collapsing, its body disintegrating into a pile of roots and stone. The clearing grew quiet, the relic's light now dim in Eryth's hand.

Kaelen approached, his expression a mix of awe and apprehension. "You did it."

Eryth nodded, their grip tightening on the relic. "But we're not done. The Sovereign won't stop until this power is theirs."

Nyx limped to Eryth's side, nuzzling their hand. Despite its injuries, the nightmare creature's resolve remained unshaken.

"Let's head back," Eryth said, their voice firm. "The real battle is about to begin."
