Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Sudden Change

It had been over a month since Bevis's 28th birthday, which meant he had resigned over a month ago?!

"How is that possible? He came back last night still wearing his police uniform!"

"The uniform, badge, and gun were all taken back on the day he resigned. He couldn't possibly have the uniform."

"Was he at the crime scene last night? When I called him, I heard sirens."

"No, there were indeed two violent incidents last night, and I was there. I didn't notice his presence." The voice on the other end softened slightly and began to complain, "Margie, to be honest, I haven't seen Bevis in nearly a month. After he resigned, he didn't come back to the station or contact his friends. Honestly, that guy is a bit cold-hearted. Even after resigning, there's still brotherhood. Why cut off all ties?"

A wave of inexplicable sadness washed over me. After exchanging a few pleasantries, I casually asked, "Do you remember which hospital he went to that day?" The other person gave me the name of the hospital, and I hung up.

I didn't call Bevis again. He must have been hiding it to spare me from worry. I wanted to go to the hospital and ask the doctor, but the restaurant couldn't be left unattended. I checked the time—the staff should have arrived by now. Why hadn't any of them shown up?

Among the three waitresses, Ada and Judy usually arrived the earliest. They had always been eager to see Bevis, chattering like sparrows as soon as they arrived, asking if Bevis had come back. Nina, on the other hand, lived far away with her boyfriend, so she often arrived late.

The three chefs—Iven, Ballo, and Jeff—were all calm and reliable, always arriving on time.

I took out my phone, scrolled through the staff's numbers, and called them one by one. Only the last call connected, and a strange voice answered, "This is the police. Jeff was killed at home last night—another inexplicable bloodshed! The caller ID shows your name is Margie, the manager of Saturday Restaurant."

"Yes…" From his tone, it seemed this wasn't the only case! "Sir, can you tell me how many violent incidents happened nearby last night?"

"Six!" He muttered something to someone beside him, then said to me, "Miss Margie, according to our investigation, the six victims were all employees of your restaurant. If it's convenient, could you come over?"

Victims?

"How… how is that possible? How did they die?" A wave of grief hit me, and tears began to fall. I hastily wiped them away.

The three waitresses were my close friends, and Jeff, in his forties, had always treated me like a father. Iven and Ballo were also easy to get along with. They had all been working here for two or three years. How could such a sudden change happen overnight?

The police officer spoke in a serious, detached tone, "Their necks were injured by a sharp weapon, with two puncture wounds. They lost 80% of their blood. Strangely, their families are all safe and sound… So, miss, we suspect this is a targeted attack against Saturday Restaurant!"

I glanced at the ring on my finger and frowned. If I wasn't mistaken, the person at the street corner last night was a vampire—he had come specifically to murder me! Damn it, I even gave him money!

I thought of the red-haired vampire baron who had hidden under the table as soon as he entered. He must have been through a fierce battle, so it was unlikely he had come to kill me. If he had wanted to, he could have drained Bevis and me dry last night.

I complied with the police's request and hung up the phone, feeling completely devastated.

God, can anyone tell me what's going on?!
