Chapter 2 - Ch 2 - First Day

Shortly after Babbs saved Jackson from a bully using nonverbal cues and communication, they quickly became friends as they walked to class together. The two finally reached their classroom about ten minutes before the first bell, which was a great relief for the children.

"Well, here we are!" smiled Jackson, "I guess this is our first class together, okay?" He put his hand on the doorknob and started to open it. Suddenly, Babbs began to shout his name. "BABBS!!" Jackson flinched, as Babbs was trying to get his attention for some reason. "What's the matter, Babbs? Are you scared of something?" worried Jackson. Babbs nodded because she was nervous about what the kids might think of her.

However, Babbs remembered what her parents said to her. "There's nothing to be nervous about, sweetie," said her mother. Her father said, "Your mother's right. We believe you'll do fine, okay?"

Babbs knew she needed to be brave, even when she was afraid of experiencing new things for the first time. She took a deep breath and put her hand on Jackson's hand to open the door. Jackson saw this and was again amazed by Babbs's bravery as she went inside the classroom with him.

The two children slowly opened the door to their classroom. When the door was opened, Babbs saw a variety of first graders with disabilities, some verbal with less support and some nonverbal with more support, just like her. Babbs smiled with joy now that she had found a place where she could finally belong.

She had her very own community of bright kids with disabilities, and she was going to love them forever! This has definitely been the greatest first day of elementary school.

As the first bell began to ring, Babbs, Jackson, and the rest of their classmates got to their desks and set up their spaces on desks that were all ready for the first period of the day.

After the class, it was time for the next school session. And the class after that, as well as other classes. And so on and so forth until lunchtime. When the final bell rang, it was time for the children and faculty to head to their homes.

Babbs put all of her school stuff and lunchbox inside her backpack, then walked with Jackson to the school's entrance with their classmates in a single-file line behind their teacher.

When everyone got out of the school, all of the families were waiting for the kids of the grade school. And all of the children were happy to see their parents, siblings, relatives, and godparents throughout the end of the first school day. It was amazing! But Babbs didn't see her parents around yet.

Were Mommy and Daddy in traffic? Did they get sick? Or perhaps something scary had happened to them? Babbs was so worried that her eyes began to well up with tears. She then started to cry so hard that Mommy and Daddy heard their little girl from the outer entrance of the school.

"BAAABBS!!!" shouted Babbs' parents, who were looking for their sweet little girl. The child quickly stopped crying, and saw her parents at the school's entrance. She wiped her tears with her right forearm and ran to her Mommy and Daddy. She was so happy to see her sweet parents, as were her parents to see her.

Babbs ran to Mommy and Daddy, and she happily gave them a big hug in tears, knowing that Babbs had an amazing time on her first day of school. Then the family walked back home.

However, Mommy and Daddy decided to take their little Babbs out to eat after having an exciting day of school before going back home. And they did, and they never looked back.
