Chapter 4 - ||04||

[Remaining threats 0/20]

[19:59]

[19:58]

As the sound of ticking reached his ears he felt a chill down his spin as flashbacks to the interviewer and User came to mind.

'It's different for everyone but you'll know when you're chosen. You may hear a voice' The User's appearance through the TV appeared tapping his head. It replayed over and over as the ticking sound seemed to set in his throat.

[18:47]

Everyone around him was still frozen, they never stood a chance as Axel looked around grabbing a tire iron. Worried they'd suddenly start moving at any moment.

Suddenly his blood was boiling as something crawled across his nose and mouth like a mask but alive!

'The fuck!' Axel panicked as he dropped the tire iron iron trying to pry the weird organism that felt like metal off of his face.

It's not like he couldn't breathe but he was scared, who wouldn't be?

[Kill the remaining threats]

He's never killed anyone-

Seeing a glimpse in his memory of his friend dying before him made him snap out of his delusions.

He was going to die either way.

If he didn't kill them first, he'd be harvested on the black market for fresh organs.

Why was he so concerned? They were prepared for their actions, it's why they chose this lifestyle.

To torment, abuse and ruin others lives. Killing them here would just be the number one rule the shitty economy fell under.

The strong rule and the weak survive.

Survival of the fittest.

Ignoring the mask for now he picked up the tire iron again and made his way to the smug looking boss.

There was so many times in his past that he'd wished people like this would just drop dead.

Swinging back effortlessly, he provided as much strength into the blow. On impact the man's head exploded like it had been laced with gun powder!?

The sheer force and power had Axel covered in the man's blood and more!

His first kill but as if sensing his devotion to the cause, time suddenly resumed naturally.

[15:23]

Now wasn't the time to think how, it was the time to survive. As the lackies that man had brought with him freaked out seeing their boss suddenly dead.

Humans fear the unknown, it's why power governs the weak.

Not giving them a chance to assess the situation, he swung again. This time, his strike torn up the ground.

Sudden, unexpected power, not yet moulded or trained properly. Simply being used for the first time and making a mess.

It made a direct hit on three as their bodies turned to smoosh.

The others tried to run away but Axel wasn't going to let a single one of them escape. It seemed that whatever was going on, he knew he had to take it. He knew a chance when he saw one.

One after another, they fell, some pleading to live, others not given the chance.

[Remaining 18/20]

'Two left' he huffed, his arms and legs were trembling. Not used to his new found strength, as he slightly dragged his feet towards the remaining men.

[11:23]

"I-If we knew y-ou were a User we wouldn't h-ave bothered you!" one yelled out as Axel's eyes narrowed.

So in other words, he would have killed a family of normal citizens in cold blood. But left the rich and powerful alone, this is why he hated Users... he'd become the thing he despised it seemed.

[9:49]

But he'd do a favour for all the people who suffered because of these bastards as atonement first.

Another one, gone, it was almost too easy. Was he already desensitised? No, Axel had been desensitised even before the first purge.

[7:12]

"THE BOSS MAY BE DEAD BUT OUR SUPERIOR WON'T LET THIS GO-" One swing with a tire iron and his neck was severed from his body.

[5:34]

[Analysing]

[Mission Completed]

'What a joke' He thought as he fell slowly to his knees. The tire iron slipped out of his right hand to the ground once more.

There was that numbness again, that feeling that had been growing for so long, he only now noticed it.

The warehouse he was in was a sea of red, body parts and more scattered everywhere. Axel was covered in it from head to toe, the only part that had nothing was were the mask had been moments ago.

'Wait the mask!' Touching his face, he smeered blood trying to assess his own situation. But it wasn't there anymore?

It was silent, quiet would have been fine but it was indeed silent. Just like how everything had froze, sound seemed to have evaporated?

[Check notice board]

'The voice?' Looking around he'd confirmed it, in was in his head. But where the hell was this so called notice board?

As he thought it, a window appeared before his eyes.

'I must of been hit pretty hard' Axel reassured himself as he went to grab at it but failed.

Without warning a sudden window had appeared, the words written 'Notice Board' at the top and 'Missons' just below could be read.

Axel with a deadpanned expression sighed, it was an actual joke. Is this really what made people the so called 'Chosen Ones'?

"It's a fucken game" he hissed under his breath. Or to be precise, it was a system adapted like a game. A literal User interface.

Man was he disappointed, the thing that could of saved his friends was a fucken game.

It was having a laugh at all the people who died at this point.

Looking back at the Notice board below missions, what read 'completed' blinked red on top of black letters.

'Accept'

Once he'd thought it the area around him morphed as his body felt stretched and reshaped. He swore he couldn't breathe for a second as he left a crime scene unnoticed.

Opening hie eyes was one thing but seeing a monster in front of him had him become a fish out of water almost.

The panic set faster than he could put into action. However the monster didn't pay him any attention, in fact, none of them did in the area he'd been just teleported to.

Axel hadn't even notice his mask was back as those around him simply carried on with the tasks they supposedly had.

Where was he? No clue, was he scared, yes. Was he going to freak out? Maybe?

Monsters big and small passed him as he wondered around aimlessly before a tab appeared blinking red.

By now he at least figured out how to use the System interface. You simply thought what you wanted it to do and it was done.

Looking at the tabs contents he grew more confused.

[Orintation in progress]

'Orientation for what?'

Not looking wear he was going, he collided with someone else head on. Only it wasn't human.

As he went to apologise, he couldn't say a word!?

"What the hell is your problem?" The creature spat before looking up. The impact had made them fall down and it was clear why. They weren't very big, small framed monster and they seemed to resemble a cricket looks wise.

Yet its bug like eyes widened looking at Axel; it suddenly got up and apologised with a bow quickly before scampering off.

Shouldn't it have been the other way around?

[Report to Orientation]

A pathway made it's way visible in his mind as where he needed to go was guided by faint dotted lines.

It was better to just follow right? It's not like he had anybody waiting on him after all. Maybe he was panicking over nothing, other Users have probably been here before right?

Finding his way to a massive closed gate, he looked around. Was he the only one here? Surely there were other Users coming considering the population of potential.

But as moments turned to minutes, minutes to hours, no one else had appeared. He'd sat down eventually with his back against the closed gate.

Did they really expect a 35 year old to stand and wait? Not to mention his back and knee problems?

It was an odd scene though, because he was still covered head to toe in blood. Yet no one batted an eye, well except for that one creature. However a lingering feeling made him believe it wasn't for that reason alone.

Should he leave? Could he even leave? Axel didn't even know how he got here in the first place? All he knows is there's a massive warehouse with his fingerprints and DNA over countless bodies.

[Welcome]

'Welcome!? I've waited hours and you say welcome!?' Axel wanted to rip his hair out as the System didn't respond to his aggression. Well at least he didn't think it did, but in its own way, it had gotten the last laugh.

It had opened the gate while his back was rested against it, he'd just fallen through with no warning.
