Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: A New Beginning

Ding ding ding… ding ding ding… ding ding ding…

(Ahh, shit, here we go again. I'll just continue sleeping.)

SLAM! The door burst open with a loud bang.

"I'm awake! I'm awake! See?" he mumbled, raising his hand and forcing his eyes open.

But as he looked around, nothing seemed to have happened.(Hallucinations? That can't be good.)

Checking the time on his phone, his expression instantly changed.

"SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! How did I not wake up early today?! The final is in 20 minutes—I'll never make it!" he shouted, scrambling to change his clothes.

(Even if I'm late, I'll still have an hour to finish. I can make it!) he thought, sprinting to his car.

(120 km/h won't cut it. If I push to 160 km/h, I should make it. Hopefully, I arrive safely.)

Well, that didn't happen. Now, instead of staring at an exam paper, he was gazing at the sky.

(I don't think I'm going to survive this...) he thought, his vision darkening as he stared at the rod impaling his stomach and protruding out his back.

(Well, it was a good life…)

(It was a good life…)

(A good life…)

(Who am I kidding? I still want to live… Oh God, please! If you're out there, answer my prayer! I prayed nonstop for the past three years for time to rewind! Please… just this once!)

That was his final thought before everything went black.

A Forest Unknown

A baby lay in the grass of a lush green forest, a peculiar expression on his face as though he were questioning the meaning of life.

(I only asked for three years… but who am I to complain?)

(If God answered my prayer and sent me back to when I was a baby, then why am I in a forest?)

He pondered the impossibility of his predicament. (Could my POS brother have been telling the truth?)

His brother had once sneered, "You're adopted. We found you in a trash can."

(Nah, that's ridiculous. This is clearly a forest, not a trash heap. And back home, finding even a single tree was impossible, let alone an entire forest like this.)

(Maybe I was… reborn?)

The thought sent a chill down his spine, and memories of countless isekai and regression novels surfaced.

(There's no way a monster will show up, right?)

He considered three possible outcomes for his situation:

-Someone finds and adopts him.

-A monster kills him.

-He starves to death.

Growl

The ominous sound shattered his thoughts. He turned his head to see a wolf with a drooling mouth staring at him hungrily.

(Looks like it's option two.) He sighed.

(It was a short life...) But the memory of his previous death and the excruciating pain it entailed filled him with dread. Instinctively, he started screaming—or rather, crying like a baby.

Elsewhere in the Forest

A woman moved gracefully through the woods, gathering herbs with practiced ease and deftly avoiding danger.

(Another successful trip. Time to head back.)

As she wiped the sweat from her brow, a strange sound caught her attention—a baby's cry.

(I should check it out.) She changed direction and ran toward the noise.

When she arrived, she saw a baby lying on the ground and a wolf slowly approaching.

(Looking at that wolf… it hasn't eaten in four days. It'll die in two more if it doesn't eat. That baby's as good as gone.)

(Oh, right, I need to save him.) Her eyes widened, as though she'd just snapped out of a daze, and she rushed toward the wolf.

(Am I going to die again?) the baby thought, the wolf's saliva dripping onto his tiny face.

But suddenly, the wolf vanished, replaced by a clenched fist.

(I'm saved? Option one, I always believed in you!) He looked at the woman who had saved him.

(A woman in her 30s… is she going to adopt me? Wait, isn't she a little too strong for a human? No—she's way too strong! Punching an 80 kg wolf and sending it flying like that… Forget it, just focus on survival, stupid!)

"As expected of an Iron Wolf—physical damage barely fazes it. Let's see how it handles this,"

the woman muttered, pulling a small pouch from her bag.

She tossed it at the wolf, and it exploded, releasing a thick fog.

The wolf's eyes turned red as it inhaled the fumes. Moments later, it began coughing up blood before collapsing.

"As effective as always—'Three Blacks' poison," she said, drawing a knife and swiftly ending the wolf's life.

(I knew you could do it, option one! Option two stood no chance!) The baby smiled, relief washing over him.

(But… what language is she speaking? I've never heard it before...)

"Look at you, smiling after nearly dying. Babies really are carefree," the woman said, picking him up by his leg. She wrapped him in a rope and slung him over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes.

(Time to head back,) she thought, sprinting through the forest.

(Option one, can you be more gentle?! Don't you know how to handle a baby?) he thought, his relief fading as her rough treatment jolted him.

Where am I?

(What kind of era is this?!) he thought, wide-eyed as they entered a strange village.

The people had colorful hair and angry expressions, and their houses looked bizarre.

"Hey, Grandma! Take this kid—I found him in the forest," the woman said, slamming the door of a small house.

"No respect for the elderly at all! Xia Lena, you ungrateful child! Did you forget I gave you a home in this village?!" the old woman began to scold her.

(Oh no, she's starting. I need to stop her.)

"Grandma Na, please calm down! Look, you're scaring the baby!" Lena said, pointing at the baby. As if on cue, he started crying.

"There, there, stop crying… Lena, where did you find this child?" Grandma Na asked, picking him up to comfort him.

"I told you—I found him in the forest. Probably abandoned by his parents. I looked around but didn't see anyone else," Lena replied.

"Well, you brought him here, so you keep him," Grandma Na said firmly, grabbing Lena's arm as she tried to leave.

"Wait! You know I can't keep him!"

"Too bad. You found him; he's your responsibility now. Raising him will teach you something useful for once," the grandma added with a sly grin.

"Fine! Give him back to me," Lena huffed, taking the baby and stomping out.

"If you need advice, come ask me—I raised three ungrateful bastards myself!" Grandma Na shouted after her.

"Humph! How hard can it be to raise a baby?" Lena muttered.

"Have you thought of a name yet?"

"No. Why don't you come up with one? I don't have time for this," Lena snapped.

"Maybe I'm old, but I still have a great naming sense. How about Xiao Sai?"

"Fine. That's his name," Lena agreed without hesitation.

(I feel like they're talking about me…) Xiao Sai thought, watching the two women argue. He had no idea they had just decided his name on a whim.

(And this woman is terrifying. I thought I was going to die for sure when she looked at me!) He let out a small sigh, finally succumbing to sleep after the day's overwhelming events.
