Chapter 15 - Shadows and Light

Shadows and Light

The firelight cast fleeting shadows that danced across the clearing, mirroring the turmoil in Ryu's mind. He sat at the edge of the camp, his thoughts tangled between the weight of his recent victory and the unease that refused to dissipate. The Trial of the Alpha had solidified his position within the clan, earning him respect. Yet, Daegan's cryptic words clung to his thoughts like cobwebs.

Will you follow their rules, or carve your own path?

Fenn joined him, plopping down with a weary sigh. "That look again. What's on your mind?"

"Daegan," Ryu replied, his tone distant. "He's not just some rogue. He knows things. I can feel it."

Fenn frowned, the usual edge in his voice absent. "Don't let him mess with your head. Clan rules exist for a reason."

Before Ryu could respond, Kierra stepped out from the shadows, her movements as silent as a predator stalking its prey. "He's right to worry," she said.

Fenn raised a brow. "You're siding with him now?"

Kierra crossed her arms, her gaze firm. "Daegan isn't just an exile. He's a strategist. He plants seeds of doubt and lets them grow. If you're not careful, Ryu, you'll play into his hands."

Ryu's jaw tightened as he met her unwavering gaze. "Then I won't."

Daegan's Shadow

Among the towering trees surrounding the camp, Daegan stood shrouded in the shadows, his crimson eyes scanning the Beastman clan. His smirk was a mixture of confidence and malice.

"Stronger than I expected," he murmured. "But strength alone isn't enough."

With a flick of his wrist, tendrils of dark energy slithered into the forest, weaving their way toward the sleeping camp. "Let's see how well he handles this."

A Hero Arrives

Dawn broke with chaos. A deafening roar echoed through the outskirts of the camp, accompanied by a blinding light. Warriors rushed to the scene, weapons at the ready, only to find a lone figure amid the wreckage of uprooted trees.

The stranger stood tall in shimmering armor, his presence commanding and unyielding. His voice boomed across the clearing. "I am Ardent, protector of these lands. I have come for Daegan."

Ryu pushed through the crowd, his gaze sharp and suspicious. "Daegan isn't here."

Ardent's piercing gaze settled on him. "You've encountered him. That much is clear. He leaves destruction in his wake. If you stand in my way, I'll consider you complicit."

Kierra stepped forward, her voice cutting through the tension. "You don't know anything about us or what we've endured. Don't judge us based on Daegan's actions."

Ardent studied her for a moment before his stance softened slightly. "Then prove your innocence. Help me bring him to justice."

The Next Trial

As tensions simmered, the elder summoned the clan to the central clearing. The air was heavy with uncertainty as the elder addressed them.

"Daegan's shadow looms over us, and now the eyes of the outside world are upon us," he began, his gaze shifting briefly to Ardent. "Ryu, your trial is not yet complete. To prove your loyalty to the clan, you must find Daegan and bring him to justice."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd, but Ryu silenced them as he stepped forward. "I'll do it. But not for the clan," he declared, his voice steady. "I'll do it because it's the right thing to do.
