The next morning, Kaelen summoned Aarik to a secluded chamber. He had a grim expression, a sealed letter in hand.
"This was intercepted last night," Kaelen said, handing the letter to Aarik. "It's a communication between Ryen and the Shadow Sect. They're planning an attack during the sect's annual Flame Ceremony."
The Flame Ceremony was the most sacred event in the Phoenix Sect, a time when disciples gathered to honor the Eternal Flame and renew their vows of loyalty. If the Shadow Sect attacked during the ceremony, the sect would be caught off guard.
As Aarik and Kaelen strategized their next move, Kaida entered the chamber. She seemed hesitant, her usual confidence replaced by a quiet unease.
"I need to tell you something," she said, avoiding Aarik's gaze. "I've… I've been helping Ryen."
Aarik froze, disbelief washing over him. "What? Why would you do that?"
Kaida's voice cracked. "I didn't know who he really was. He said he wanted to reform the sect, to make it stronger. I believed him… until I realized what he truly wanted. I'm here now because I want to make things right."
Kaelen stepped forward, his expression hard. "If you're lying—"
"I'm not," Kaida interrupted, her voice firm. "I can help you stop him. I know his plans, his allies. Please, let me prove myself."
Aarik studied her for a moment before nodding. "We'll give you a chance, Kaida. But if you betray us again…"
"You won't have to worry about that," she said, determination shining in her eyes.
