A loud, piercing alarm echoed through the halls. It shook the walls and caused panic to the girls in my room.
I jolted awake, my heart slamming against my ribs. Before I could even process what was happening, the heavy door swung open with a bang.
The stomping of boots could be heard from down the hall as the guards forced open the doors, causing the girls in the rooms to scream.
The guards stormed in, yanking girls from their beds without hesitation. Some girls had to run out with their sheets tied around their chest.
I scrambled up, reaching blindly for Karena, desperate for some kind of anchor in the chaos that had ensued.
"Karena!" My fingers barely brushed against her wrist before she shoved me away.
"Get off me," she snapped as she hurried to her feet, brushing past me like I was an object.
I froze. My chest tightened as everyone rushed past me.
