Chapter 2 - Alliance and departure

Sebastian followed Roland through the bustling streets of the village until they reached the inn. As they entered, the vibrant atmosphere enveloped them: adventurers and merchants exchanged tales of their travels and planned new expeditions. The wooden floorboards creaked under the weight of the patrons, creating a cacophony of voices, laughter, and the constant clinking of tankards and coins. The air smelled of stale beer, woodsmoke, and the stew simmering in the hearth.

The first member of Roland's team Sebastian met was Markus. A wall of a man. His beard, a dark tangle that reached his chest, looked like it was made of wire. His eyes, gray as steel, scanned him from head to toe, with no hint of friendliness, but with a firmness that promised protection. A white scar crossed his left cheek, a silent testament to battles past. Sebastian felt a weight in his stomach, not fear, but the certainty that this man was a force to be reckoned with.

"Sebastian, this is Markus," Roland introduced, gesturing towards the imposing figure. "Our guardian. Strong as an oak and reliable as a rock."

Markus nodded curtly. His voice, deep as the rumble of distant thunder, resonated in the room. "Pleasure, Sebastian. Heard you're an expert in botany. Your knowledge will come in handy."

Sebastian offered a warm smile, feeling a budding sense of camaraderie. "Thank you, Markus. It's an honor to join the team and contribute my knowledge."

As they settled into a corner of the inn, Liam joined them. His face, weathered by the sun and marked by a thin scar that cut across his right eyebrow, told tales of countless adventures. His dark hair, tied back in a messy ponytail, gave him a disheveled but attractive air. He extended a hand with nimble, knobby fingers towards Sebastian.

"So you're Sebastian. Roland told me about your knowledge of herbs," Liam said with a mischievous grin, his eyes twinkling with a playful spark. "Glad to have you aboard. With your brains and our brawn, we'll be unstoppable."

Sebastian shook his hand, noting his firm grip. "The pleasure's mine, Liam. I hope I can live up to expectations."

The conversation flowed easily as the group discussed the plan for their expedition into the forest. Roland spread a map on the table, pointing with a calloused finger at the intricate paths and potential dangers. The map, worn from use, showed drawings of twisted trees and strange creatures.

"We'll have to navigate through dense undergrowth, and we might encounter goblins along the way," Roland explained, his brow furrowed. "Our goal is to locate their lair and assess the situation. We must remain cautious and alert at all times."

Sebastian listened intently, absorbing every detail. Dense undergrowth… I hope there aren't any nettles, he thought, remembering an unpleasant childhood experience. "Understood, Roland. I'll keep an eye out for any poisonous plants or herbs that could aid us or pose a threat."

Markus nodded approvingly. "Good thinking, Sebastian. Your expertise will be invaluable. We rely on each other's strengths to overcome any obstacles."

As the conversation continued, the team made preparations for their journey. They stocked up on provisions, inspected their equipment and weapons, and ensured they were adequately prepared for the task ahead. The bustle of the inn intensified as they meticulously checked every detail, exchanging advice and sharing their expertise.

With their supplies secured and spirits high, the team stood before the inn, ready to venture into the unknown. The air vibrated with anticipation, a mix of uncertainty and determination. The morning sun illuminated the path leading into the forest, casting long shadows that seemed to beckon them into its mysteries.

Sebastian took a deep breath, his gaze fixed on the forest's edge. Here we go, he thought, feeling a slight knot in his stomach. The forest stretched before them, imposing and mysterious.

Markus nodded seriously, his heavy hand resting on Sebastian's shoulder. "We leave at dawn. Rest well."

Liam gave Sebastian a brief smile. "See you tomorrow, Sebastian. Try not to dream of goblins."

Sebastian nodded, returning a nervous smile. "Likewise."
