Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Chance Encounter

The sea wind blew softly through the sea-side narrow paths of Seaview and the edge of the sea and children's merry laughter was faintly audible. Olivia straightened the strap of the satchel that contained her set of paints and one blank canvas to depict the quietude of the shore.Ā

She kicked off her sandals, and walked barefoot in the sand, leaving shallow footprints behind. The tall massive stones were relentlessly beaten by regular waves as if the sea was singing her chaotic symphony. Painting was her escape and today in the hope of creating a masterpiece of the sea, she needed it the most.

She made herself comfortable along the rugged coast to where waves had eroded rocky land forming small pools of water to the sun. Choosing a flat stone as her seat, she organized the paint she had, touching the tubes of colors with anticipation of the scene going to be left on the canvas .

Unconsciously, Olivia did not pay much attention to the self-umbra cast over her arrangement.Ā

"Miss," a deep voice called, hesitantly and awkwardly.

Surprised she spun around, her eyes locked with oceans of blue, it was as if the color of the seas she so enjoyed portraying were reflected in the man's eyes. The man before her was tall, raw look, well built with slightly messy but stylish dark hair that seemed to have got a feel of the sea. Kindness flickered at him, erasing the severity that lined the man's sharp, chiselled face.

"Oh!" Olivia gasped and blushed at the same time. "I didn't see you there."

The stranger laughed quietly, and it was a deep resonant laugh that

Ā resonated inside her chest. Oh sorry for scaring you so; He wasĀ

fascinated by my work saying "I couldn't help but notice your workā€”it'sĀ

beautiful" pointing at her partially sketched canvas.

Olivia looked at the picture she had drawn amazed that he had noticed it. What we had was in fact barely more than an outline. "Thank you," she said softly running her and taking a strand of the auburn hair and twirling it behind her ear. "I was just getting started."

"I'm Liam," he said offering her a handshake with a grin getting wider.

They both smiled at each other, she told him: "Olivia," and he took her hand into his. His hand was warm, strongly but softly clenching my hand, palm was saturating slightly rough which did suggest that he used his hands quite intensively.

Danny and the young man blessed each other by shaking hands and as they were smiling at each other a seagull flew on their heads and they both laughed. Olivia looked up, then at Liam again, realizing that he was studying her rather intently. "Are you visiting Seaview?" She wanted to change the course of the conversation, so she asked, But I noticed that.

Liam bobbed his head, and let go of her hand. "I am. I am living in a small hotel close by as I have some initiativesā€¦ private business related ones. And you? Are you a local artist?"

'No,' she said, 'positing it down, not to be exact you know' she added with a blushing nervous smile on her face. I've been living here for a few months now. Just an escape I suppose, Seaview that was what I really thought I Needed a change of scenery.

"Well, I can see why," Liam said while looking at the shore line. "It's breathtaking here. But that extra thing that you put in your art enhances it and makes it even more intriguing."

Eventually, Olivia's cheeks proved red at the compliment. She looked at her canvas looking shy. "It's just a hobby, really."

>If this is you in your spare time then I can only begin to imagine what you would produce if you do it for a living.

Before the girl could answer, the sea threw a realistic wave of water on her feet making her scream. She chuckled and backed off. Liam also laughed out joining her as he looked at her with amused expression in his eyes.

'These are the tricky gene waves you have to be careful of,' he explained. "They can be sneaky."

"Clearly," Olivia said, smiling up at him.

There was a space of friendly silence in which the only indication of life was the music of the sea and the harsh cry of the gulls. Finally, Liam spoke again. Can I watch you for a few minutes? Obviously, I promised not to disturb you or draw your attention from your duties.

Olivia frowned in questions at the request being made. The fact was that she did not get much of an audience on a daily basis. But there was something about the way Liam was so seriously looking at her that made her nod her head. "Alright, if that's what you really want to do?," she said while smiling at me teasingly.

Liam laughed again, and the sound cane to her, making her feel rather warm inside. "I think I'll survive."

When Olivia started to paint, Liam dropped down to a distance of about three feet in front of her, leaning against a flat rock, his arms folded on his knees while he observed her. She continued working while staring at him at least glancing to see him studying her painting skills or even the sea in the background.

'Well, that I've moved here and this was the closest widow, what do I mean?' or 'So, what were you doing at Seaview?' she asked after a while, in attempts to know who this stranger is who was able to breach her serene environment.

Liam's face assumed a slight frown of concentration. "Well, to cut the long story short, I'm here in the hope to do some self-reflection," he explained an obviously false statement. "Things have beenā€¦urons recently and I thought it better or take some time of from it all."

Olivia also for once simply nodded for she could feel where Julia was coming from. Smiling she said, 'Seaview has a way of healing the soul'.

"Perhaps it does," Liam replied, and looking her into the eyes. That's why she loves travelling or maybe it is the people you meet on the way.
