...
Surprise!" several voices said at once.
I looked around in shock.
"Happy birthday to you!" Lisa said as she walked toward the others.
"You almost sent me back to the hospital," I muttered. "But this time, it would've been a heart attack!"
She grinned. "Well, what can I say? It's the perfect opportunity since you don't even remember your own birthday!"
I glanced at the cake in confusion. "If this is my birthday, then why is there a cake with your picture on it?"
"Because it's my birthday too!"
I blinked. "Wait… Were we born on the same day? Are we twins?"
She laughed. "Yeah, twins! But there's a three-year gap between us. You're so smart!"
I raised an eyebrow. "So, is this just a coincidence, or was it planned by our parents? If you get what I mean…"
She smirked. "Looks like it was planned, but they failed anyway. My birthday is actually tomorrow, but they always celebrated both on the same day."
I pointed at the cakes. "Then why does my cake say 22 and yours says 19?"
"You're 22."
I frowned. "Shouldn't I be turning 23? You told me yesterday that I was 22."
She waved a hand dismissively. "Yeah, I meant that you're turning 22."
I narrowed my eyes. "Then considering that, you should've told me that you're 19, not 18."
She scoffed. "Have you ever seen a girl who actually wants to get older?"
"Good point."
I turned to the people in the house. "Who are they? Am I supposed to know them?"
She smiled and gestured toward someone. "Some friends. Well, you only know one of them," she said, pointing at Dr. Palmer, whom I had met in the hospital yesterday. "The rest are my friends."
"My friends? You didn't invite them?"
She gave me a weird look. "You don't have any friends."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Is this another joke?"
"Nope. But don't worry, my friends are nice! You can befriend them too. Plus, there are a lot of beautiful girls among them!"
I sighed. "What a wonderful sister I have..."
She grinned. "Let me introduce you to everyone! This is Peter Parker, Ned Leeds, Gwen Stacy, MJ, and Harry. They're my friends from Midtown High School."
Then, she pointed to another group. "And these are some friends I met from another school during a cultural exchange event: Jean Grey, Scott Summers, Kitty Pryde, and Anna Marie."
As soon as Jean Grey's eyes landed on me, they narrowed slightly.I noticed her stare and felt a chill run down my spine. 'Damn it… Does she suspect something already?'I quickly tried to clear my thoughts, but my fear lingered. If Jean Grey read my mind, it would be a disaster. She'd know I wasn't the real John Morphy. Worse, she'd learn things about Marvel that she wasn't supposed to know.Lisa suddenly turned to her. "I'll leave you to meet everyone. I want to talk to my friend Jean for a bit."
Jean's POV
Lisa approached me with a serious expression. "Jean, can I talk to you in private?""Sure," I replied. She hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Did you read my brother's mind?"I frowned slightly. "You know I don't like using my powers on people."She sighed. "I know, but if you did, tell me… Is he really suffering from memory loss? Or is there something he's hiding? He's been acting different ever since he woke up."I hesitated before finally admitting, "I took a quick look… but strangely, I failed."Lisa's eyes widened. "What do you mean?""There are only two possibilities," I explained. "Either your brother has suddenly become an Omega-level telepath…"She scoffed. "Yeah, sure.""…or he's dead."She stared at me in shock. "Explain."I took a breath. "Think of mind-reading like trying to watch TV. For normal people, the signal is clear, and I can easily see their thoughts. Some people have natural resistance—like a TV with a weak signal or interference, like Magneto's helmet. It's like looking at a screen covered by a curtain—I know there's something behind it, but I can't see clearly.""And my brother?" Lisa asked."Neither," I said, glancing at John, who was now talking animatedly with others. "It's like a broken TV—no image, no signal at all.""Like someone who's dead?""Exactly," I nodded. "Or… someone powerful enough to make me think that."Lisa's gaze lingered on John. "That's weird…"
John's POV
"Lisa never told us her big brother was this handsome," Kitty Pryde commented playfully.I chuckled. 'Speaking of looks, I seem to be unnaturally good-looking in this life.' "Thanks, Miss Pryde, but how can I care about my looks when surrounded by such beautiful ladies?""Oh, smooth talker, huh?" she laughed. "Maybe we should go out sometime. And call me Kitty."As I exchanged numbers with some of them, I noticed Scott Summers narrowing his eyes at me. His gaze lingered a little too long on Jean and Lisa before he finally looked away. 'Why is this guy staring like that?'Before I could think too much about it, the Midtown High group joined us."Are we actually going out or what?" MJ asked, raising an eyebrow."We're taking John out to see if anything jogs his memory," Lisa explained.Gwen Stacy tilted her head. "That sounds like something I could write a research paper on." She smiled. "If you guys don't mind, I'd love to join. I don't have much to do during my internship at Oscorp anyway."Ned Leeds suddenly jumped in. "Wait, what's amnesia like? Sometimes I wish I could forget things just to experience them fresh again—like playing video games, rewatching anime… or rereading Mental Master!"Everyone turned to look at him."What? I like games!" he defended himself.I chuckled. "That's good. Maybe someday we'll play together… through magic."His eyes lit up. "Wait, what game? Is it out yet?""You'll find out soon enough."Before Ned could press further, Harry Osborn approached me with a polite smile. "Mr. Morphy, I'm glad to see you recovering. If you ever need anything, let me know. My father owns Oscorp." He glanced at Lisa. "She mentioned you were good with computers before your accident. If you're interested, I could get you a job."I smiled. "Just John is fine. And thanks for the offer, but unfortunately, I lost that skill along with my memories.""No problem," Harry said with a nod."Peter, right?" I turned to Parker, who had been oddly quiet."Yeah, and happy birthday," Peter said, rubbing the back of his head."Thanks. Why do you look so tense? You look like someone's out to get you."Lisa frowned. "I noticed that too. He's been acting weird for about a week now. He didn't even want to come tonight until I dragged him out.""I'm fine, really," Peter insisted.I studied him for a moment before shrugging. "Alright, if you say so. But if you ever feel overwhelmed, don't push yourself too hard." I smirked. "You can even ask this 'old man' for advice."Peter gave me a puzzled look as the others laughed. 'So, he must've gotten his powers recently… Maybe I should keep an eye on him.'
